How much of a gap do I leave when installing hardwood floors between a brick fire place?
Feb 07, 2008 by hondo | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I am installing hardwood floors in my house. I know you need to leave a gap in between walls for expansion. I was planning on using trim to cover the gaps. I have a brick fire place that I will not be putting trim on do I still need to leave a gap??If so how much??
about 3/16ths of an inch or so
just wonderin | Feb 07, 2008
yes, definitely, with the heat from the fireplace (and even without it) the wood floor is going to expand/contract, just leave a small gap, you should still cover it with quarter round on the bottom of the baseboard if you don't want it to show
crystal_raindrop | Feb 07, 2008
If the wood has been acclimated to your home prior to install, leave no gap at all. I have argued this with a number of people. I'm a builder in Mass., and all the homes that I have built or remodeled, the hard wood butts tight. I have been in 100 year old homes, and the floors look fine.

Where can I find a klin with technology to fire clay brick by using old tyres and waste product?
Jul 16, 2007 by Safari X | Posted in Other - Business & Finance
I am starting a business manufacture clay bricks at Tanzania. I need to build a Clay brick factory(small scale production about 7 million bricks a year). The factory will need production machinery and equipment for brick production. It will also use a technology of firing brick by using old tyres and waste products. I am looking for supplier of low cost machine and equipment to build the factory. Also I asking for any advice and information on how to use old tyres and waste product to fire the bricks
There is a cement company in the Scottish borders that uses the technology you are talking about to manufacture cement. Contact Scottish Enterprise for more information about this.

Best way to put a stone veneer over a dated brick fire place? Mortar direct on brick or use lath first ?
Nov 17, 2007 by dave c | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
We want to put a a cultured stone or slate veneer over our dated brick fireplace. Would it be best to mortar directly on the brick or nail lath onto the brick surface first and then put a mortar coat on the lath...or screw up hardebacker and mortar cultured stone (or tile) to that? Thanks in advance
You have the right idea, I would use some tap-con screws and attach the backer board to the brick and existing mortar. And then set your material to that, no problem.

What is the best chemical/formulation to use to clean brick that were smoked up in a house fire?
Jan 12, 2008 by GentleBachelor | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I am restoring a house that was damaged in a fire. I want to save the brick that was smoked up in the fire. I am looking for a chemical or formulation that has been successful in cleaning fire damaged brick. I would expect to use a high p/h detergent but this is some tough stuff and has resisted common cleaners. I want to use a presure washer, and avoid scrubbing as much as possible. .
First, you need to use a strong caustic material. You are correct in assuming a high p/h.
You do not want to power wash, that destroys the basic surface of brick and renders it vulnerable to further damage from smoke and dust. IE it removes the natural protective layer from the kiln firing. It is really bad policy to clean brick and concrete with power washers. I see a lot of that going on and not enough info out there on the severe damage that is doing to the brick and concrete. What it does is remove that protective layer from the surface and renders it vulnerable to much more damage or dirt attraction than ever before. Dont do it.
Acid, is inactive against an oily material such as smoke discoloration. That is basically "tars" from the wood. So dont use acids. And certainly, a solvent such as mineral spirits would allow the tar to leach further into the brick.
The solution is to use caustic soda. That is available cheaply and readily in the form of spray OVEN CLEANER from your local grocery store for about $ 2 to 4 a can. Buy the cheapest one, non brand at like Krogers.
Spray the surface with the Oven Cleaner. Wait till it is nearly fully dry. Then take a wet spong to it and clean what ever came off and rinse with detergent and clean water. Let it dry and bit and give it another dose of the Oven Cleaner. It will take 3 to 4 doses of this to remove it but it will defenitely do the job for you.
When you are finished. You can seal the brick with a brick sealer and prevent that from happening again. This material is composed of high molecular weight Silicones and works quite well for an application such as yours. The cost for a gallon is quite high, its in the range of about $18 or so, but it is well worth it to protect your fireplace from further smoke damage.

No problems so far with the product itself. Shipping on the other hand...
The product is fairly sturdy and hasn't given us problems yet. The only downside would be that the legs seem a little flimsy. Some assembly required. And beware...the instructions are poorly printed with no written explanations. The upside is that it does not take a rocket scientist to put a fire bowl together in the first place. The company sent a couple of tools with the parts, but I would suggest using your own tools instead. Also, I thought it was strange that our screws were not placed nicely in the bag that came with it, but thrown into the box haphazardly. Once you get everything put together the bowl works just fine.

I have just purchased a wood fired oven and was wanting some new ideas on cooking in general. Together with the DVD this is an OUTSTANDING package. After watching the DVD, it made all the recipes in the book look so much easyer for the beginer like myself.

Excellent book & DVD
We have owned a Mugnaini commercial-sized wood-fired oven for one year, and are avid and experienced cooks. Our previous experience in learning to cook in the oven came in hands-on classes from the manufacturer, and pior to this date we have made pizza, bread, and roasts in the oven. However, we didn't have what I would call a deep knowledge of best practices in using the oven; nor many recipes.
Both the book and the DVD have excellent content, full of valuable tips for the beginner and advanced oven user. The book was enjoyable to read cover-to-cover, and had many appealing recipes. But we had a large number of "aha" moments while looking at the DVD; and then re-reading the cookbook crystalized everything for us.
We can't wait to try out a larger number of appetizers, breads, grills, and roasts using our new knowledge. This book is highly recommended.

Great Video
This book has an excellent DVD that is a very good tutorial for the novice. My husband and I both sat down to watch it a few times for some guidance. It has really helped saying that we had never cooked anything in a wood fire oven. We love having the oven and this has given us the confidence to jump right in and try some new things.

Very informative book & video filled with great recipes
It is difficult to find books on wood-fired oven management and cooking, let alone a book/video combo on this subject matter. After seeing the ratings and reading the comments from the previous two reviewers of this book I was not sure what to expect, but ordered the book anyway. Having read sections of the book and watched the entire video I was not disappointed and in fact inspired to write my own review to praise it!
The book is printed on nice glossy paper, includes many beautiful color photos and the recipes are simple to follow using commonly available ingredients. Each recipe cross-references a chapter in the video that actually shows you how to prepare and cook the food. If a picture is worth a thousand words then a video (3 hours!) is priceless. The author clearly illustrates food preparation and discusses oven management to maximize the types of foods and cooking techniques one can use during a single firing of the wood-fired oven. If you own a wood-fired oven, after reading this book and watching the video you will feel very confident that you understand how to best prepare your food and use your oven to create a variety of great meals. If you don't own a wood-fired oven, you will be inspired to buy and use one!

Perfect
I am back to order more - The sleeves were nice and long, the material was light enough to layer if I want and it didn't shrink when washed. The perfect casual t-shirt.
good fit, wrong color
The fit for this long sleeve t was pretty good (what I expected). However, when it says 'old lace', it really meant 'old, old, old lace'. The t-shirt is not the cream color it appears in the picture, but is much more yellow.

Grandma's Opinion
My husband and I purchased this fire station for our grandson, age two. This station was an addition to his already sizeable collection of LEGOs. The fire station was his favorite Christmas gift! It's easy to set up, re-package when play time is over. It's sturdy and definitely child-friendly.
We are very happy with this purchase and the very quick turn-around time between date of order and receipt of the fire station.
Good for a 3 year old
My son enjoys tearing the firestation apart once we build it then creates really "BIG" firetrucks. I can see him enjoying this toy for a long time.

Old fire hall redevelopment options hinged to heritage building status
