Brick house?

how would one insulate a brick house, or put up wood inside for the walls?
is building a brick house cost more then wood if you build it yourself?
are you able to lay the brick and then finish the inside of the house i want the brick for the structure is that possible
Brick is expensive. You have to buy the brick, the mortar, sand, and have someone lay the brick. You build the house first, then put osb on th e oustside and then put the brick on. The insulation is on the inside of the house.
Yes, we bricked a house last fall and now are insulating and putting up drywall.

Should I paint the brick on my house?
Jun 02, 2007 by Diana3122 | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I have a brick house with some wood siding. We are planning on painting the siding and are considering painting the brick too. I like the look of painted brick and think it might freshen everything up. Is there any reason why we should not paint the brick? Thanks!
If u'r gonna paint u'r brick outside, u need to prepare it to accept the paint thru the weather. On the OTHER hand... y not just enhanse u'r brick by putting a glaze/stain over it. U'll need to pressure wash it as well & let it throughly dry then take a stain of the same shade or of one of the colors & go over it. Or u can make a glaze w/ outdoor paint. The stain & glaze will protect u'r brick from the elements & if it comes off... it will blend in & look like the brick already.
Painted brick is nice to some extent, but outside, I wouldn't mess w/ it unless u get some concrete stain. Ask u'r hardware paint dept. If u'r really wanting to paint the brick. Don't use ordinary outdoor house paint . It won't last on outdoor brick.

How do I frame a concrete brick wall while remodeling an old house?
Apr 26, 2008 by riflespinner2000 | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
We are in the process of remodeling an old concrete brick house after a fire and fire hose flood. In order to bring the house up to code we have to rewire a few walls and add power receptacles. We also want to add insulation. Our idea was to put normal 2X4 framed walls in front of the old concrete walls. This way we could wire and insulate the old house. What is the best way to attach the 2x4 wall to the old concrete wall? This also all has to meet code.
There is no reason to attach the framed wall to the concrete. You can simply build a wall that runs from the floor to the joists above (you may need to add blocking to catch the top plate if the wall runs parallel to the joists). If the floor is concrete, use a pressure treated bottom plate. Snap a chalk line on the floor where you want the wall. Measure up to the bottom of the joists (or blocking), subtract 3", and cut your studs to this length. When you stand the wall, anchor the bottom along the line, then check the wall for plumb at several points. Nail the top plate to the joists and you are done. Hope this helps.

How is a brick house built?
Jan 11, 2008 by bdkbrown | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
How does a brick house differ from a wood framed house with siding? Can the siding just be replaced with brick? Or are the bricks in a brick house load bearing? Also, how are windows put into a brick house? A web-site that details the building of a brick house would be very helpful--it just has to be general, I'm not really going to build one, but my younger cousin was playing with his blocks and some questions came up...and I can't answer them.

What color siding would go better with a red brick house?
Jun 24, 2008 by jay | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I have a red brick house with wood soffits and eaves. Instead of painting, I am wanting to replace the wood with vinyl siding. What color siding would go better with a brick house? I also need to know what color to paint the front door, shutters, and small concrete front porch. The windows frames are bronze colored. Any suggestions?
OK, since most of what is on the facade of your house is red or red based in nature (brick, bronze window frames), let's move with a complimentary color also on your house but one I'll bet you didn't even notice. I believe that the brick is the primary visual element of your house, with accents such as doors and shutters being secondary. Holding all those bricks together is mortar...up close, you can see it is a greenish gray. The size of the mortar joints is small however in relation to the size of the house. Knowing this gives us some latitude when picking a siding color to compliment the bricks. Your eye will want very badly to believe that a "putty" type of color matches the mortar. A very nice neutral, not too light and not too dark to go with the brick would be Benjamin Moore's HC-95, Sag Harbor Gray, another would be HC-111, Nantucket Gray. Both will be complimentary to the brick and will show it off. See if you can find a siding that comes close to one of those colors. Then I would steal a note from the brick and paint the door a lucious dark reddish brown as an accent, HC-64, Townsend Harbor Brown. Ordinarily I would pick another color for shutters but in this instance you have enough going on, paint the shutters the same as the siding. Voila! a tasteful and long wearing color scheme with sophistication. You didn't mention your roof color but unless you have a green roof, this will work marvelously with just about any other color.
