Brick patio?
Nov 30, 2006 by Belize69 | Posted in Garden & Landscape
Where can I find some cool designs for a brick patio? I want to build one. It will be 12x12. How difficult would this be?
If you've built one before please share your experience. Thanks.
Here is the answer !
Don't just automatically trust that if you pay some contractor to do it, that it will be done properly; some ARE experts who do great work and SOME AREN'T good or knowledgeable or don't care but to get your money and enforce some image of their company. With proper information, YOU CAN either do it yourself, perhaps even better than a "pro", OR hire a contractor who will do it right because you know how it should be done properly, and you can set the specs and supervise it.
THE best most professional information you can get is from this brick association website, full of technical notes on any topic concerning bricks, including proper installation of pavers on a patio, walkway, driveway, walls, etc...You will get informed as well as the best professional installer.
http://www.bia.org/html/paver/Bookstore_technical.html
has a list of several FREE tech notes on installing pavers.
The home page www.bia.org has a tab for "tech notes", that also has other topics concerning bricks.
Oh, and if you install clay bricks on the ground, make sure they are "paver quality", -- in frosty areas they need to be "frost-proof" a higher density clay that won't get damaged from freezing and thawing. Frost-proof clay pavers are beautiful full shade of colours that will never fade and never need sealing.
Concrete "interlock" pavers are less expensive to start, but colours gradually fade. Some of those have interesting shapes too. Some Patterned Concrete looks great when its new, if its done right, but problems will develop even on good ones, and it won't look good at all later.
For patterns, this webpage has the best bunch illustrated anywhere:

Hi!
I hope you have plenty of money for equipment... the professionals use gear to do their work ... and you will need it too, to keep it level, squared off, etc .. why don't you just hire someone? I think it will be cheaper in the long run. There are all sorts of problems you can run into - things that don't appear to your eye, but a professional sees from experience. I dont "do it myself" any more ... I have run into the worst problems and often made situations worse and had to spend extra money.
Look at it this way: the patio guy is a professional.... he has spent a lot of time at his craft ... you need to respect that and let him do things rather than assume you can learn his craft overnight, so to speak ... That way you will have something nice, that you can rest assured will not "crash" some rainy night ..Have a heart for yourself!

We put in a flagstone patio. It would never stay level. It had a compacted sand base but that didn't seem to help. We replaced it with stamped concrete and just love it.
I suggest you consider the same. You can get a multitude of patterns from bricks, to cobble stone, to flagstone to slate. You can also chose the color you want.

How do I know how much brick to order when building a dry set patio?
Nov 12, 2006 by mylapsuslinguae | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I'm planning to build a brick patio without mortar. Is there a quick and easy formula for estimating how much brick I'll need?
Measure square footage. Its 7 brick to a square foot. So if its a 10 by 10 area thats a 100 square ft. So thats 700 brick.

What's the best way to remove dead grass from a brick patio?
Sep 27, 2007 by Hitchhiker90 | Posted in Garden & Landscape
The back yard has a brick patio and what used to be green grass until I sprayed it with grass and weed killer. Now the grass and weeds are dead but how do I remove the dead grass and weeds from between the bricks? I tried it previously using an old pair of boots and just kicking the vegetation out of the ground but there has to be an easier way.
Well, the easiest way is to let it rot and turn back into dust -- but by that time, you'll have new weeds.
I hate to say it, but the best way to get rid of it permanently is to get down on your hands and knees and pull it out. It may seem tough, but it's a patio! It's not like the courtyard of Versailles, is it? I bet you can finish it up in less than an hour. Try 15 minutes, and see how much you get done. Maybe you can hire a neighbor kid to do it.
To keep the weeds away, try using rock salt on the patio, and sweep it into the cracks. This will poison the ground underneath, and nothing should grow.

How fo I build a patio of concentric brick rings?
Apr 15, 2008 by Stevie | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
Hi
I wish to build a circular brick patio about t to 3 metres in diameter in my garden for placing garden chairs tables on.
The design would use concentric rings of sets or bricks each of which would be approx 75-100cm square.
Any idea where to find this in a plan form?
Thanks
TJ

How do i get rid of ants on a brick patio?
Sep 13, 2007 by Giovvana D | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
I have a 4000sf brick patio, and i have ants comeing up from below. How do i stop them from coming threw the joints?
BLACK PEPPER, put black pepper around your patio. the ants will carry this into the egg-laying queens nest .She will then move the ants out. Some people might suggest pouring boiling hot water into their tunnels ,but this has very little effect as the water never reaches far enough in to kill the egg-laying queen. If you wish to use a chemical and have no fear of children or family pets being harmed by this then you can pour a solution of HCH insecticide or dust around the brick work with HCH. Try with the pepper first
