How do I remove hard calcium buildup from house brick?
Feb 20, 2008 by nkhilli | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
I have a thick calcium buildup from my irrigaton system on my brick...and a power washer wont' get it off. Any ideas on how to scrub this stuff off? It needs to be safe for the plants around it also...
Lime-Away, CLR etc. will soften the build-up, but it'll be a slow process. I'd contact one of the industrial chemical supply companies and see what they recommend because you'll need to buy it in a bulk container (1 gal. or 5 gal.). Cover the nearby plants with 6-mil plastic when you apply the chemical to prevent damage to them. Allow the chemical to "work" then use your pressure washer on the build-up.

Does anybody know of a way or a system to remove Paint from brick on the exterior of a house?
Feb 02, 2006 by tonyrx1 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I ahve a house where some idiot painted over the brick. Granted I bought it this way and the house looks OK. It would look even better with the beautiful brick exposed like all of my neihbors. Can anybody help?
You can try a pressure washer, they often will do the trick.
Check with a paint store on a solvent to loosen or emulsify the paint before washing.

What is the best heating system for a threee story brick house(100 years old)?
Mar 28, 2008 by dostrunia | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
Currently I am using a oil burning boiler system with radiators in every room (11 of them) - oil is being used up at an incredible rate. Need to upgrade the system. Because of location I can not use solar or wind (much as I would like to)
Thanks
To me it's hard to beat hot water heat with radiators. If the boiler is really old you will realize a huge savings simply by replacing it with a new energy efficient model. If the boiler is not much older than ten years , you're much better off putting your money into new windows and more insulation, then later replace the boiler. There are a few ways to save fuel with addon products. Outdoor reset controls read the outside temp. and match the supply water temp to your systems requirement based on a preset curve. A very simple thing to try is constant circulation- running your circ. pump constant during the heating season and the burner will respond to the room thermostat, injecting heat to the circulating water as needed. This drastically reduces standby losses.A relatively new product by Beckett Corp. is the "heat manager" . It's a simple to install device that "learns" your boiler cycles through a supply water sensor and is capable of just running the circ. pump and not the burner if it knows there is enough hot water in the boiler. They guarantee you a 12% savings at the least which is huge at todays oil prices. Hope this helps.

How much would it cost to have a gas heating system installed in an older brick home with an oil furnace?
Oct 17, 2007 by HeatQuestion | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
The house is in a neighborhood with gas lines, but I don't know how close the main gas line is. It's roughly 1,200 square foot. It also has a fireplace, which will help with the heating costs but we want to find out how much it would be to make the change from oil to gas, as oil can be so expensive.
I think it depends on where you live. For me- in the Midwest- it would run about $4,000- 6,000- depending on ductwork and the like. I would recommend going the geo-thermal route. Initially it is about 3x as much. Here are the perks though.
1- You use far less energy- only electric.
2- You get big rebates for installing the system- sometimes up to $5,000 from your electric company.
3- There are far fewer moving parts (only a pump), so it presents fewer problems down the road and is less expensive to fix and upkeep.
4- It eliminates the need for central AC and all of the cost that goes with it, since it uses the ground's temp of 55 degrees.
5- It is "green" and gives you knowledge that you are doing your part (cheesy but true)
I have a friend that installed a system in his house. He has about 3,000 sq. ft. He heats and cools his house on less than $100.00 a month- winter and summer!

What happens to my old xbox 360 power brick after console is repaired?
Jul 25, 2008 by Boomerg21 | Posted in Video & Online Games
I am getting my console repaired due to the red ring of death. I heard that the systems that are made with the new Falcon chips are 175 watt systems. So, if my console is returned with the new chip, I am guessing it will now be a 175 watt. If that is the case, will my old 203 watt power brick still work or will they send me a new one? Thanks for any answers!
I had the same issue and my brick was compatible with the new chip. No problems at all.
