How do i replace a steel door frame in a brick wall?
Apr 01, 2009 by jwheat65 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I want to replace a steel door frame in a single brick wall. I believe during construction the frame is put up first and the bricks fit into it and lock it in place. I think i can probably cut it out ok but i don't know how to put in a new one.
Standard Australian brick house.
Buy a "knockdown" buck, comes in three pieces, 2 side jambs and a header jamb. you can either bend tabs over (provided) or weld together in place. Remember... Plumb & square!!

You will have to buy a "wrap around" three piece metal jamb. when you order it, you will need to specify the height and width of the door, and the thickness of the wall that this doorway is in.

if the door buck is going to be the same size you have to cut the old frame out and take a whole brick out near the bottom , middle, and the top on both sides. this is where you door anchors will go to hold the new frame in place...you may want to take out two brick at each place and grout the door buck as you replace the brick...hard to explain in one paragraph...

If this building is a wood frame building with brick veneer, then the frame was secured to the wood framing, then the brick was just laid up to the frame. The frame was secured with metal brackets that lock into the frame and then the ends bend over and around the wood framing and secured with a screw. This means you can simply run a sawzall with a metal cutting blade down between brick and frame on both sides of the door frame.
If in fact it is a block wall with brick veneer, then the frame brackets are imbedded into the block joints as the block is laid up & sometimes the frame cavity is then filled or we call it *slushed with grout. This grout fills the cavity of the metal frame and locks in around all the frame anchors. It is tough to tear out this kind of frame.Look for a grout hole about 1+1/2" in diameter at the top of the frame head pc. This tells you if the frame was grouted in.
To install a new frame- simply measure your total wall thickness and try to keep your new frame set out as close as possible to the surface of the wall on the side the door swings to. If you hold the frame in too far the door will hit either the brick or the inside wall corner keeping the door from opening completely.
It would be best to have the door manufacturer of (door shop) come out and take the measurements, check the wall thickness, check door swing, etc. You probably have a 7'0" tall frame - which is usually used on masonry, or a 4" head pc. on a 6'8" frame which gives you 7'0" to work out with block/brick height.
You can have the new frame *Dimpled, to where you just anchor it into the wood or block frame with either flat head wood screws for wood, or flat head wedge anchor for block.
Metal doors and frames are expensive so I would have the door shop to all the measuring.

I am about to build a brick walkway in my garden.?
Jun 08, 2007 by DANIEL R T | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I know that I will need to trim my 100 year old bricks to fit the herringbone pattern. What I need to know is this. Is there a blade that I can put on my miter saw that will do the job and not cost me a gazillion bucks. I've already heard about chisels and hammers and that seems like a lot of iffy results. A rented wet saw seems to be the most popular answer but getting water to the site is a problem. Electricity can be done which is why I'm wondering if I can use my fancy-assed compound miter saw.
i wouldnt gunk up my miter saw, i would put a diamond blade on my circular saw. even if it doesnt cut all the way through you can snap it the rest of the way with a hammer. you dont need water if youre outside...just wear a respirator mask...

Why doesnt my xbox 360 power brick fit into the console?
Jan 27, 2009 by samanthabrousseau | Posted in Xbox
When i go to plug the cord into my xbox there is a little line that prevents it from fitting. What kind of power brick do i need in order to give power to my xbox?
I made a picture so better explain what my power cord looks like.
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=b6apmg&s=5
So how can i determine what kind of console i have and what type of brick i need?
How do i know if i have a 175w console? If i do what brick do i need? Sorry im clueless about this stuff! Thanks!
i heard that the 203w brick won't fit into the 175w consoles(ones wiht falcon chip and the jasper i think) so i'm guessing that's the problem, check the manufactured date on the console and the wattage on the power brick. if its a newer console 2007 or newer then u need the 175W power brick, also the jasper chip consoles use 150W brick so the jasper is 2008 and newer i think. but nay ways check them
like i said if the console is made in 2007 or later its more likely a jasper chipped one there for its a 175w console (the wattage rating should be on the power brick) if its made before 2007 its an old one 203W

Latest global fits to SM observables: the situation in March 2009
A current discussion in this blog between well-known theorists and phenomenologists, centered on the earnest meaning of the experimental measurements of top quark and W boson masses, Higgs boson cross-sector limits, and other SM observables, convinces me that some clarification is needed.
The business has been done for us: there are groups that do exactly that, i.e. updating their global fits to express the internal consistency of all those measurements, and the implications for the search of the Higgs boson. So let me go through the most consequential graphs below, after mentioning that most of the material comes from the LEP electroweak working coterie web site.
First of all, what goes in the soup ? Many things, but most notably, the LEP I/SLD measurements at the Z high, the top quark mass measurements by CDF and DZERO, and the W mass measurements by CDF, DZERO, and LEP II. Let us give a look at the throng measurements, which have recently been updated.
For the top mass, the situation is the one pictured in the graph shown below. As you can undoubtedly see, the CDF and DZERO measurements have reached a combined precision of 0.75% on this sum.

The world average is now at . I am amazed to see that the first estimate of the top mass, made by a nuisance of events published by CDF in 1994 (a set which did not even provide a conclusive “impression-level” significance at the time) was so dead-on: the amount back then was ! (for comparison, the DZERO measurement of 1995,...
