iVE done a few of those jobs and simply used a good type s cement. Split face is very pourous so periodically soaking it will help.

Best way to put a stone veneer over a dated brick fire place? Mortar direct on brick or use lath first ?
Nov 17, 2007 by dave c | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
We want to put a a cultured stone or slate veneer over our dated brick fireplace. Would it be best to mortar directly on the brick or nail lath onto the brick surface first and then put a mortar coat on the lath...or screw up hardebacker and mortar cultured stone (or tile) to that? Thanks in advance
You have the right idea, I would use some tap-con screws and attach the backer board to the brick and existing mortar. And then set your material to that, no problem.

What is the best tool to use to remove lava rock around a fireplace to make it flush for cultured stone?
Oct 11, 2008 by v g | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I'd like to know the tool I would need besides a hammer and the type of wood to put under the cultured stone I want to put in. I've seen brick addressed many times on DIY but never lava rock. Thanks
How uneven is it? If it's not real bad, try coating it with stucco. If it is real uneven, try an angle grinder with a diamond blade.

Cultured Stone - Need a solution for poor craftsmanship.?
Mar 15, 2009 by World Famous Kool Aid Man | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I built my home as an owner-builder. Most of the house turned out TERRIFIC, but I have an exterior masonry fireplace that looks horrible due to the workmanship. Mostly, the problem is that he smeared mortar all over the cultured stone (Centurion) and didn't clean it off. It's been about 9 months since installation. What solutions do I have? Is it a good idea to jst paint it? I have painted brick and the same stone on the rest of the home.
You can try a solution of muriatic acid and water with a wire brush. They sell it in hardware and pool stores. Wear gloves and gradually make your solution stronger till you can see it dissolving the messy spots. We use it to clean up messy grout--and cement truck drivers use it to clean their drums and shoots. Its going to take some elbow grease--and you want to rinse the area with plain water when you are done.

Is $9.00 per sq ft too much to pay for just labor to install brick veneer?
Mar 31, 2009 by Jim R | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I bought 300 sq ft of cultured stone to apply to my house. A "friend" wants to charge me $9.00 per sq ft for labor to install it. That seems Way high!!
How much is reasonable to pay for installation of cultured stone?
Jim R
That's pretty reasonable actually. 5 years ago, when I built my house, a brickie I was working with charged $7/sq. ft. $2/sq. ft. in 5 years is a reasonable increase. Hope this helps.
