How to renovate the exterior brick wall?
Jul 20, 2007 by crazyprogrammer | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
my house's exterior wall looks very old. Bricks are still in good condition. Only the mortar between the bricks is not good. someone is missing.
How can I renovate the brick wall? Can I just fill mortar in it? or something else?
I also see my neighbour's brick wall is very nice. they have color in mortar. How can I add color in mortar?
thanks
Tuck-pointing is a very tedious job and usually left to the experts....
depending on the required joint finish it can take months to do a single average dwelling....for one person...
mortar is prepared by removing all loose and cracked bulk, pressure cleaning with a high pressure water blaster is also recommended so as to remove any lichen and or fungi growth etc. ...acid cleaning with a mid strength HCL acid solution is also helpful if pressure blaster is not available....
If you are inexperienced with using mortar and in tuck-pointing then I suggest that you try an inconspicuous area to practise/try out first as if you stuff it up it can be quite an eye-sore.....
mortar is 4 fine brickies sand, 1 cement, 1 fire clay, bi col or other plasticiser to water at recommended rate, add coloured oxide at trialed strength to each mix exactly the same quantity & brand throughout the entire job or the color will differ.....
Practice getting the mix right before starting the job for real....
the mix must be " plastic " or you will have it falling out on you...
a grouting gun can be used but the old method was to use a angled straight-edge to slide the mortar into the joint with a pointing trowel.....
when you get sick of it .... call a pro....
Alternately you could " Bag " or render the walls with a coloured render..... more materials... less time and expertise ...

Chisel or grind the degraded mortar back. Use the equivalent of a pastry bag to squeeze some into large gaps. Re point the edges between bricks with a narrow trowel. Adding colour to the mortar is as simple as mixing in some pigments (see any good building centre).

Repairing the mortar is called tuckpointing. There are colored dyes that can be added to the mortar to get different colors. Good luck.

What chemical is a good exterior brick cleaner and safe on plants and vegetation.?
Feb 28, 2007 by gfadams1 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I want to water blast exterior brick and driveway. I would like to use a cleaner for the mold and fungus. Howver, I do not want to harm grass, plants and shrubs.
Do NOT blast brick surfaces with high pressure water. That destroys the bricks barrier against moisture penetration and permanently destroys the bricks surface.
You can easily clean that green mold and mildew off your concrete and brick surfaces with HOT water. Turn your hot water heater up. Take a hose and attach it to the bottom drain on your hot water tank, then run that hose out the window to your spray pump. Set for low pressure and clean the mold and mildew right off with that hot water.
This is a very effective method of removal, as heat itself is much more effective against mold and mildew that chemicals are. Mold and mildew build a cover barrier and enter a dormant state when attacked by chemicals, only to come alive a few days later.

How do I run wire for an outlet down the inside of an exterior brick wall?
Dec 30, 2008 by ck | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I would like to install an outlet in my living room. The wall where the outlet is needed is an exterior wall with brick on the outside. Also my ceiling in the living room is vaulted. Can I run the wire on the inside of the brick wall starting from the attic and pull the wire through the drywall to the interior and if so,how is this accomplished?
I may not have been very clear in the original question. I would like the wire to run down the inside of the wall between the drywall and brick. (If that is possible) Thanks for any help
use a fish wire.
First determine where you want the outlet. Then cut the hole in the drywall for the box. then carefully measure horizontally to a common reference point you can see both from the box and from the top of the wall. Measure over at the top of the wall and bore a hole in the wood at the top of the wall. then run your fish wire down and wiggle it until a helper can grab it and pull it through the box opening.

Weep holes on exterior brick walls?
Jul 08, 2008 by mrleruelewis | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
What is the purpose of weep holes on exterior brick walls of just about any brick building ?
And what happens if those holes are plugged ?
The purpose is to allow moisture to escape from the interior. If they are plugged then you can get rot, mold , and general damage to your building. If they are plugged clean them out.

What's the best way to revive a solid brick exterior that's old and paint is flaking?
Aug 12, 2007 by u2knknow | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
I have a 100 year old colonial. we are renovating the exterior and it needs a major makeover. It's a solid brick house. Mortar needs to be repointed in some areas. It unfortunately has at least 5 old layers of paint that are flaking. What is the best way to revive the outside? Is possible to restore down to the original finish by sandblasting? or Would it be better just to powerwash and repaint? Also is it possible to cover a brick exterior with a textured surface. I saw a house that had a beautiful textured exterior that almost looked like it was sprayed on (looked very thick with big grains or pieces in the textures).
thanks,
Justin
You can use media blasting to get down to the original surface of the brick. They are doing that with a house about 3 blocks away from me. Good luck with it.
