How do i plaster an old brick wall in my garden?
Feb 17, 2008 by sm110384 | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I have an old brick wall in my garden that looks a bit scruffy. I am thinking of plastering it and then painting it to make the garden look a little more attractive for the summer. I have heard that plastering is a tough job but can someone give me an insight into what materials i.e types of plaster etc i would require.
Many thanks.
You could just put a coat of cement on it and rough it up a little using a brush

You wouldn't be using plaster, you'd need a cement render.
Have a look at: http://www.goldtrowel.org/rendering.asp
Then call a professional!

Wear old cloths. Get rubber gloves, plastic container or wheel barrow, hose, stick/trowel, stucco mix. Wet the wall, don't do this on a hot day, cool cloudy day is best. The wall needs to be free of mud and dirt and grease. The longer the stucco stays wet the stronger it will be. Put on the gloves. Put 1/4 of a sack of stucco in the plastic container/wheel barrow. Add water a little at a time and stir the mix. Stop adding water when the stucco at the bottom gets wet. Mix more. Add water only a little at a time and mix. When it is thicker than pancake batter it is OK. Add more dry stucco powder of too runny, add more water if to dry. Let sit 15 minutes. Take a ball of stucco in one hand and smear it on the wall. The thickness can be adjusted by you. All the kids will want to join, it is lots of fun. Mix more as needed. Wash the kids and cloths asap.
Mist the wall(lightly) 6 to 12 hours later, wet every 12 hours for a day or two. Wait a month or more to paint.

before you apply any plaster always wet the wall first. you will need to mix some sand and cement mixed 4 parts sand to 1 part cement and mix it very wet like slurry this is called scudding . this is very important if it is an old wall because it will give the wall grip for your next coat.you will need to need to cover the wall very lightly with this you should use a dasher and make sure you leave no gaps an then leave it for a day. now its ready for a scratch coat this time you have to mix the sand and cement 4 parts sand and 1 part cement and 1 part lime but mix it thicker this time you should be able to spread it easily. apply an even flat coat and lightly scratch it with a yard brush and leave it until the next day. the scratch coat will make it easier when applying the finish coat. mix the same as the scratch coat and apply an even flat coat and then use a float in a circular motion an when it is floated up 30 mins use a dry sponge in a circular motion adding a little water if needed

How do I revive an old brick fireplace?
Feb 19, 2008 by Somora | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
We've just bought a new house and the brick fireplace is old, outdated and just plain ugly. What's the best way to update it? Can I paint it or will the paint blister and peel with the heat?
I painted right over it with some of that textured stone paint. Looks fabulous. I got my paint at Lowes.
Don't paint the inside though, and you'll be fine.

How to remove old Mortor from a brick?

I have an old brick from Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I want to clean it up for display.
Only way I have ever heard of is a sharp chisel and light tapping with a small hammer. Once you get the mortar off you can power wash it at a car wash and it should be the focal point of your Racing Room.

How do we prep our old brick chimney in order to cover with new stonework?
Dec 31, 2008 by uktine101 | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
We have a old chimney from 1949 that comes up through our upstairs bedroom, and we have plans to freshen up its look by covering it with some new stonework. How do we prep the brick in order to install the stonework? We are guessing a cement and grate method? What exactly do we need? HELP! :)
