How do I to render a painted brick wall?
Jan 17, 2009 by angel_7200 | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
After reseaching I discover that render will not stick to paint. In my lounge I have a 7'x4' internal old brick chimney, with very rough brick that has been painted white. Its so 70's and ugly. The paint is in very good condidtion, not a speck of brick to be seen, so removal of the paint isnt an option.(also impossible) I want to render it. Can anyone suggest a way how, or perhaps any other idea, but i dont want painted bricks
Thanks in advance
Couldn't you wrap it with the wire mesh they put on a house foundation before putting architectual stone up then put your plaster or lath on that?
Good luck!

Can I paint over painted brick, or do I need to sand or prime first?
Sep 11, 2006 by Melanie | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I have a fire place with the brick that was painted white, I want to paint it dark brown. Can I: paint right over it, prime first, or must I remove the paint?
I really really do not want to remove the paint. Too messy. Any help would be great. Thanks!
IT DEPENDS ON THE EXISTING PAINT SURFACE. IF IT IS SLICK AND SHINY, YOU SHOULD PRIME IT FIRST, THEN PAINT OVER IT WITH ANY INTERIOR LATEX. IF IT IS COVERED IN SOOT, CLEAN IT WELL WITH A MILD SOAPY WATER SOLUTION (LIKE DAWN DISH LIQUID), PRIME AND PAINT. IF IT IS CLEAN AND A DULL FLAT SURFACE, GRAB THE LATEX AND START PAINTING. I KEEP SAYING LATEX BECAUSE YOU DON WANT TO USE OIL BASED PRODUCTS, AS THEY ARE FLAMABLE.

How can I stucco over my painted brick crawl space walls?
Dec 02, 2006 by crimsoninja | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
Removing the paint has proven to be rather difficult, can I just stucco over it? If not could I nail a metal lath over the brick and then stucco? My painted bricks are extremely ugly, and I would like to hide them and make them blend better with my concrete block crawl space addition. I've never stucco-ed before, Thank you for your help in advance.

Thanks
Sorry for the double post. I didn't find it when I went back to check for answers.

This should give you an idea. I am thinking you will need to rough up the paint for the thinset to adhere.

Is it better to repaint an already painted brick house or to put vinyl siding over the brick, or to sandblast?
May 07, 2007 by Matthew R | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
It is a century brick home in a cold climate (near Ottawa, Canada) that also needs more insulation. Is it possible to put insulation under exterior siding - or would it be better to put up new drywall inside the house with foam insulation behind it?
Many thanks to anyone with renovation experience / knowledge who finds time to answer.
I agree with points made in previous answers, and insulation inside will perform best. I don't need 10 points, but I want to add that bricks work best if they are allowed to be breathable. Remove the paint and keep it off. Do NOT sandblast it though, because that would micro-damage the bricks, opening the surface layer making it more porous, and set the stage for more damage as from freeze-thaw. Unpainted brick works better, and has a heck of a lot more character and beauty than any siding. If you put siding up, people may think its very cheap wall composition as if nothing much behind the siding instead of a lovely, strong, solid brick wall. Show off the true and lasting beauty of your house ! :)
PS - GO SENS GO !!! :) Show off the beauty of the Stanley Cup too while you're at it :)

Paint it black to keep warm in winter
Columbia Daily Tribune - Feb 05, 2012
Most buildings have their “best side” that you're supposed to look at — maybe a front door with some gratuitous columns or other functionless architectural features or the one side that's brick while the others are plastic. Not interested.
