Is it a lot more expensive to build a house out of brick/stone, than traditional materials?

Sep 29, 2008 by A A | Posted in Other - Home & Garden

I see very few houses made of stone and/or brick in my area. In terms of materials cost, are these more expensive than traditional framing/insulation/siding? What about costs for labor? Thanks so much for any input.
Good answer Barry, I should've realized that. Thanks
Thanks mustanger

House building materials are linked to supply. In Cornwall UK they are built of granite blocks because the quarries are next door. No doubt in USA Oregon they are timber framed and clad. It's all to do with availability and haulage. So the answer is, if you go against the flow, it will cost more.

Brick and/or stone are a bit more expensive to install than siding. The framing and insulation won't change, the brick or stone just takes the place of the siding. Also the slab needs to be poured with a "Brick ledge" to support the brick or stone siding. Long term maintenance costs of brick and stone is what makes them a bargain. No painting, no worry about rot, insect damage, wind damage, water damage, Etc. Of course if you live where brick is manufactured or stone is quarried it's a lot cheaper to begin with. The weight makes it expensive to ship.

Cooking Pizza on a Brick Stone in a Gas Oven- Help?

Jan 30, 2007 by CuriousGeorge | Posted in Cooking & Recipes

I purchased a 'Brick Stone' Pizza Pan while I was staying with family in Canada. I made a pizza and baked it in the pan in their electric oven. It cooked perfectly the crust was crisp and it was all evenly baked - just what the pan's box said the brick stone does.
I was so pleased with my purchase that I bought another one and took it home with me, to England.

However, I made pizza at home and baked it in the same pan in my Gas oven and it took longer to cook and the top of the pizza was browned but the crust was still soggy and pale. I left it in longer but the base of the pizza just wouldnt crispen up! I dont know whats wrong, the pan worked perfectly in Canada but here in my gas oven I'm not getting the same results!

I thought it may have been my dough or something but I tried baking a frozen pizza in the pan just to get the same soggy base results!

What can I do to achieve the crispy crust that I got by using an electric oven? :(

I have a pizza stone too and we love it. Although our oven is electric, my sister-in-law has a gas oven and stone and uses it without any problem. One thought though...be sure to preheat the oven with the stone in it. If the stone has been allowed to get hot before you put the pizza on it, I don't understand why you would have a problem. I know I didn't preheat the stone a few times and the crust wasn't nearly as good.

Also have you checked the thermostat in your oven? Sometimes gas ovens need to be recalibrated as they get older. Get an oven thermometer (they're cheap) and heat the oven to any temperature. Once it is preheated, check the thermometer to see if it matches the set temperature. If it doesn't you need to reset the thermostat. Your oven manual should tell you how.

How do I create a patio (with brick or stone) on the side of my house where the ground is slopped?

Dec 29, 2005 by Dave | Posted in Garden & Landscape

I have about 6 feet of space between the house and the fence and I want to create a little patio or sitting area out there. There is nothing but dirt right now and there is a good 1 foot difference between the hight of the ground at the house and the height at the fence. What is the best method for flattening the ground, then paving over with stone or brick? And should I leave some slope for drainage purposes? Any other drainage issues to consider?

I am not sure about slopped ground....did you feed pigs there or something?

Laying stone over brick on a fireplace mantle?

Jan 26, 2009 by Lance A | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling

I am going to be laying architectural stone over my brick fireplace. Since there is already brick there, do I have to lay metal sheathing and still do my scratch coat? Or will the brick alone be ok?

Will same stone (brick) as neighbor reduce house value?

Jun 29, 2007 by C Collins | Posted in Other - Home & Garden

Please help reply to a couple questions. In a neighborhood of 40 homes priced from $500,000 to $1,000,000 with a pretty good mix of styles and colors, would you notice a home that has the same stone (brick) as a home two doors down (different windows, soffit, facia) and would it lower the value of the two homes? Would you notice what features are the same between homes on the same street or is the inside of the home more important?

I would notice it if I was looking for it. Most people are looking for an address.
