has anyone used a thin brick product to cover an interior wall or use as backsplash?

Jun 28, 2008 by crackedpot | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling

i'd like to know your experiences, brands you might recommend, etc. i'm thinking of using a brick veneer or thin brick product to use as a backsplash in kitchen and maybe to cover one interior wall (wall drywalled and painted already) but want to know any possible pitfalls beforehand. please share. thanks

I would be care full anything porous will soak in the grease or water make sure it is sealed properly. You can buy sheet goods at your local building supply that look like brick or rock

We have a product called Harditile and hardiplank. They are both fibreboard and one has a tile and groove look, the other plain. Both come in different colors. The only pitfalls would be cost, and you need to cut it very carefully. It does look great, but for your job,you might find wall tiles easier.

I have done it for a couple of clients and it it great!! No problems whatsoever. Easy to install, not to pricey for the overall look. I have used Boral Brick. I used the color City Hall but just depends on how dark you want it.

What are some of the disadvantages to "thin brick" exteriors?

Jun 26, 2006 by bdkbrown | Posted in Other - Home & Garden

"Thin brick" is much more affordable than traditional brick exteriors, but I'm unsure of its durability and appearance.

The name alone tells you the number one issue....when it is hit by things it has the potential of breaking a lot easier then the regular size brick.....good luck

Is it hard to install faux brick to a wall in your house? Is "thin brick" cool?

May 08, 2006 by Koz | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

I want to make one wall in my house look like it is brick. The faux brick that comes in panels looks bad. Has anyone installed "thin brick"? is it hard? What tools would I need?

I just did a wall in my house with thin stone, it is about 1 inch thick, Looks GREAT. Was really pretty easy.
Supplies
Roofing felt
wire mesh
N or S type Morter mix( This is just regular morter mix)
Optional Acrylic bonding

Bricks or Stone

Tools
Morter trowell
Wheel barrow or large bucket
circular saw with diamond blade

First make sure the walls are good and secure as fall as sheetrock being secure. Then staple a layer of roof felt on wall horizontally starting at the bottom and just overlap an inch or so. Then get wire mesh from lumber yard (it should be around the concrete mix or drywall area) If you need to ask about it it's the same stuff they use for stucco. Screw it to the wall in the same way making sure to screw int0 the studs at least 1 inch deep and every 8-10 inches. Then mix N or S type morter mix as directed on sack
and if using the acrylic use 3 parts water to 1 part acrylic. Just try not to get to much liquid. Someone once said the dryer the morter the stronger the bond but it also can't be to dry. Then make sure the base of the wall is level, If your doing this in a room that is carpeted take up the carpet from that area and starting on floor put your morter on the wall making sure to press enough to reach though the wire work an area about 2 bricks high and 3 foot long and then butter your brick on back and bottom and sides and press into wall and hold for about 10-15 seconds work your way down and up the wall, On second row alternate where the joints are.

thin brick application question?

Jul 29, 2008 by Chuck W | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling

i'm applying thin brick on the front of my house, three sides. there are two outside corners. doing one corner first on an existing structure, i have no control on where the brick ends up when i get to the other corner. how is this usually handeled?
sorry to offend the "brick purist," but the thin brick i'm using will look like real brick, or else i would not use it. thanks for the help. it makes sense.

With real brick, the courses are started from both ends at the same time.when they get close, they trim down 1 or more brick in the course at different places so it doesn't show.
Look at any brick wall, you will see the short one someplace in every course.7/29

How do I remove thin fake brick from the exterior of my house.?

Aug 02, 2006 by nay | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

I would like to replace it with fake stone.

I am a brick contractor here in Kansas city. I do fake stone and real stone, brick and block. You can remove it with a chipping hammer, but that is alot of work, or you can clean you brick and lay the fake stone on top of the old brick.
if you want to remove the brick you just chip away. I would suggest you put down a tarp to keep the small pieces of brick from getting in your yard. It will be easier to clean up. Once the brick comes off there will either be a metal panel or wire mesh that will have to come off as well. I would just go on the top of it, the mortar will bond to the brick anyway. use type s mortar it is a little stronger.
