How are tumbled bricks and blocks made?
Aug 15, 2008 by JOE105 | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
Not how the bricks and blocks are made, but how is the tumbled effect achieved. Actually tumbling them would break them. A link to how it is done would be helpful.
Actually, it's just as described, they tumble the brick in a media tumbler. Brick is pretty hard if not hit with a fissure-creating implement.

My brand new tumbled brick walkway looks like the bricks are being hit with a hammer and breaking?not normal??

Whoever installed it did it improperly. The ground and fine stone under the bricks needed to be compacted with a compactor or a steam roller before the bricks could be laid down. This probably wasn't done or done incorrectly so now, when you drive over the bricks, the ground under them gives a little, the bricks become unlevel and your car crushes them. After all, bricks are made of fairly soft material and are not meant for driving over with a 4 to 6,000 pound car.
If you want a brick looking drieway, you can get regular concrete with colored additive in it to make it look brick color and there are many companies out there that use rubber mats and tamp or press them into the concrete while it's still wet and it looks just like brick, but is really soild concrete.

What type of porch step riser should we use - brick, flagstone or bluestone?
May 04, 2008 by blue_eyed_girl | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
We installed a brick walkway leading up to our front porch (which is plain concrete). What type of stair tread should we use?
The house is tan siding with red, black and tan brick, and the paver walkway is a tumbled small rectangle in a running bond pattern.
We have one step, so we want it to look great! Any thoughts?
flagstone ,or bluestone ,a dark stoone will really set it off

why should the government allow for cities by the ocean build houses of wood and not of brick? ?
Sep 15, 2008 by lasalle_1986 | Posted in Renting & Real Estate
i know most houses have roofs made of wood, but at least the rest of the house will stand still. while wood houses, if it tumbles, it will all tumble. i dont understand i live in miami and all the houses over here are made of either brick or cement blocks or sheets of cements. and we get hurricanes from either side. from the gulf and the atlantic ocean.
The local governments get pushed and pulled by many different constituencies. Builders want to sell homes and if the cost of construction goes up, they sell less. Home buyers say they want safety but they always buy the cheapest homes they can afford..

I need 6500 frostproof/premium grade housebricks and breezeblocks to suit same...?
Feb 15, 2007 by Indy500 | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
How many packs is this and could I store them in a yard that is 5 metres by 7 metres square? Where is the best place to get them near to Cannock, Staffordshire? Prices, experiences and any relevant information please. I need to build a rather large extension and I need to project manage and buy the stuff myself to reduce costs. Any builders out there with advice? I don't need mega-expensive 'reclaimed tumbled brick', just a basic red brick will do. And how much cement/sand will I need?
in the u.s. brick come 525 brick per cube. you would need 13 cubes . approx. 4ft.x4ft. per cube for strorage space. we figure 100 brick per bag of mortar. probably 10 ton of masons sand. standard brick are figured at 7 brick per sq. ft. of coverage. here we pay anywhere from 35 cents to 65 cents per brick. might get some better answers from your fellow countrymen...
