What is the cost difference between vinyl and brick?
Jul 26, 2007 by Wendy Jean | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
My husband and I are going to be building a 2,000 sq ft home. We both want brick but have been told it is around $12,000 more than vinyl. We live in middle Tennessee. Thanks!
I live in your region and own a business that guides clients through the whole construction process while they act as the builder. Brick in this area is less expensive than other regions because a lot of brick is made around here. General Shale is headquartered in East Tennessee. Brick is about $350 per thousand for material alone. You should figure about $5-6 sf installed for material and labor. Vinyl is less expensive but it tends to fade, hail can easily damage it, and it needs to be cleaned because of fungus that grows in the region. A third alternative that is in the middle of your options is a fiber-cement board. Hardie Plank is the most popular but I like a product that is made by Certainteed. It is "greener" containing less silica and requires no special blades to cut. It can also be stained to look like wood. It holds up to hail and many insurance companies equate it to brick because of the cement fiber. Maybe using brick accents around the house and cement fiber board for the rest would be a good solution.

Hello,
You seem to know the answer already. Stay with brick. It's natural and eco-friendly. Vinyl is plastic.

That's actually not a bad deal at all, go with the brick.

that is right brick is much more expensive but you do not have to care for it like vinyl . the difference is the care of the house it is a one time purchase and it is time consuming to put up , you will need to find a good brick layer and they are not all a like!!

Brick is always nicer looking and no maintenance involved.
Our house is half brick and the new addition is vinyl. The vinyl over time does get dirty.
We have to pressure wash ours every few years.
Plus with brick, it does add value to your home and your insurance will be some what cheaper.
Bet you didn't know that. Worked for Allstate 7yrs and agents tend not to tell you that.

Approximately how much does it cost to resurface a home that's vinyl in brick?

The house is over 4,000 sq/ft and is our dream home. It is perfect in every way except for the fact that the exterior is vinyl and we love brick exteriors. We would only need to have the front surface of the house and the garage done. Is this something that people have actually gotten? Is it time consuming and expensive?
This has been done before using precast (reinforced with rebar) standard 6 inch x 10 inch concrete supports. Those come in lengths from about 5 feet to 15 feet or so. The same identical precast concrete supports used to attach a garage structure to a poured concrete basement as used on many homes throught the US.
What is done, is that on 10 foot centers or thereabouts, a hole is dug right down to the existing footer dept and a pad poured at that level from concrete. Then using a circular standard form that is made from wound paper about 12 inch diameter, a pilaster is poured to the correct height out of concrete.
Onto these pilasters those precast concrete supports ive mentioned about are placed. And onto those, the 3 1/2 inch brick is laid with an air gap between your houses' existing siding to complete the new brick facia onto the house.
So basically, what you have is a number of pilasters at around 10 foot centers onto which is placed concrete precast base to lay the brick onto.

What exterior siding should I use (Brick, stucco, Vinyl)?
Jun 27, 2006 by King Money 1985 | Posted in Renting & Real Estate
Most of the houses in the area are vinyl, with some brick houses in the area...I recently received an estimate of approxiametly $20,000 to install new vinyl siding on the house...What should i go with Vinyl, Brick, or Stucco, how much more would brick or stucco cost and what are the advantages and disadvantages? Stucco is very good lucking but I have heard about alot of problems with it...any ideas?
I think brick is so beautiful, is eclectic feeling, and has character and history. vinyl and stucco are so unoriginal. of course, brick is more expensive, but it is durable and you wont have any problems with it so it would be well worth the money in my opinion.

How do I brick the outside of vinyl house?
Jul 14, 2008 by Roger T | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
My house is all vinyl sided, and I want to brick the lower section of the front of the house. Do I need to have concrete footing or is there another way?
You can bolt angle iron to your foundation.Make sure it's level and long enough at the bottom for your brick and a gap behind it.Go to your local brickyard they will hook you up.You need the angle iron with holes in it.Same thing you use above doorways and windows. We have to do it occasionally when the foundation crew forgets to put a brick ledge in a porch.Just to clarify angle iron is what holds your brick up over doors and windows.
