What is a good method to remove old caulk and what tools are good for recaulking?
Mar 10, 2008 by Krys | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I have some old caulk that is cracking and pulling away from the wall. There is A LOT of it and I need an easy method to remove it without ruining the paint job and an easy method to apply new caulk without getting it all over myself and the wall. Lets just say I don't have great experience with caulking without making a huge mess.
use a razor knife and cut carefully at the paint line
then use a 5 in one tool and scrape it out
5 in one can be found at paint store when you buy the big stretch and a new dripless caulk gun
cut the hole in the caulk tube as small as possible in order to deliver a minimal amount into the crack, eliminating excess
wipe with finger then immeadiately wipe finger with warm damp cloth

Is there any type of tool to remove that waterproof type caulking that seals the space between the tiles and?
Sep 18, 2006 by winc | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
the tub in my bathroom? The current caulking has some kind of dark black mildew spot and I would like to remove this caulking altogether a re-caulk it. What type waterproof caulking is on the marker and are there any type of job specific tools that I may need to get this done?
if the tile was installed properly it should be a silicone based caulking that is colored and textured to match the grout. a razor knife usually does the trick to remove it, if you can free a good size piece of it it will often pull right out like a string. DO NOT USE GROUT to refill the gap, the tub and tile (and wall behind the tile) expand and contract at different rates and hard grout will crack allowing water to seep behind the tub and will eventually destroy the tile and cause mold problems. make sure you clean the tile well before re-caulking. most home stores will carry the grout caulk or if its white grout a kitchen and bath silicone caulk will often match close enough. it shrinks a fair amount so you may want to caulk twice and make sure you use your finger to smooth it out, this pushes it into all the cracks and crevices better.

Trying to remove a toilet that is caulked really well to the floor (bolts out). Tools/Tips to break the bead?
Jun 17, 2008 by bayou_don | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I've used a pairing knife, single edge razor blades, and even a long wire and can't get the caulked toilet off a tile floor. Short of busting the tile are there any clever ideas or tools to try? Yes, the nuts are removed from the ring bolts so the only thing holding it down is the caulk...
There is a tool called a glazier bar that is available in the paint department at Home Depot. It's a thin flat bar about 10" long, Using a utility knife, clear enough space to insert the tip of the bar under the toilet. Gently work your knife and bar around the toilet, being careful not to pry too hard. This will take a little time, but it should break the seal. Good luck.

What is the safest way to replace caulking in our composite shower stall?
May 02, 2006 by oregonfolkart | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
Caulking is starting to leak. Should I remove the old? Or put another layer of caulking on top? What tool is safe to use without damaging composite (Corian look-alike) shower liner?
I would remove the old with a razor blade along the two edges the caulk is touching. Then re-apply a good quality caulk. The price difference between a good caulk and poor quality caulk is only a few dollars.

Caulking tool shown on tv
you don't want them. get a few trowels 1/4, 1/2, and 1" grind the edges round. keep clean with alcohol, or m.e.k.
that stuff you want is junk, you would be better off cutting a credit card to the shape you want.
