Taking down acoustic ceilings?
Jan 17, 2008 by JEFF | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
How the hell do I take down all these acoustic ceilings ? I have to sell the house soon, and these popcorn ceilings aren't helping
its messy but you have to scrape it down mud it sand it oil prime and paint if its old it will come down easy but it does suck after you scrape it down oil prime only after mudding and sanding or the paint will just peel right off

Acoustic ceilings are different from popcorn ceilings. Acoustical ceilings have the tiles that you can remove. If you mean popcorn ceilings, you can try a paint scraper to see how easily it will strip off the ceiling. Starting is the toughest to get an areas scraped off, but once you have a patch cleared, just drag your scraper along the drywall ceiling and it should start coming off in sheets. Good Luck

get a spray bottle and fill with water spray the ceiling not too much but just enough to make the acoustic to swell. then use a wide putty knife to remove the texture. hold the handle at about a 30 degree angle and push. the texture should roll off. it takes a little practice so be gentle. best wishes for you on this project.

If its been painted you'll have to scrape it. Otherwise, get one of those pump up sprayers and fill it with water, and saturate the popcorn. The weight will pull it down (with a little help).
Be sure to spread plastic on the floor before you start.

How do you remove caked on grease from acoustic ceilings of a restaurant? Fomula 409 doesn't work.?

There is a cheap product that the pros use and nothing I've used works.
Try using TSP. It is available at lowes. It is also a key ingredient in most dishwasher powder soap. But remember to rinse thouroughly. Tri Sodium Phosphate=TSP!

Which is cheaper for popcorn (acoustic) ceilings?
Jun 01, 2008 by lazydazy | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
We want to get rid of our hideous popcorn ceilings. We are going to have them tested for abestos, but either way, is it cheaper to have the ceilings scraped, or have them covered with sheetrock?
If you don't have any major damage like cracking, then the cheapest way is to scrape, sand and retexture. You can apply orange peel, knock down, spanish lace, etc. Drape the walls with thin mil plastic and cover the floors before scraping.
Good luck

Can you clean acoustic ceilings safely?
Mar 04, 2009 by wonder gut | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
The house I am buying , the owner smokes and the ceilings have that popcorn stuff on them. Can I clean them to get rid of the cigarette smoke and if so what can I use effectively?
Whether or not there's any asbestos depends on the age of the popcorn on the ceiling. Years ago (1960's) us drywallers wouldn't buy any drywall mud or popcorn unless it clearly stated on the bag that it contained asbestos. Shows you what we knew at the time. Anyway, the popcorn may contain asbestos. As far as scraping it off, that is only possible if it has never been painted. It it's been painted, the only way to get rid of it is to take down the entire ceiling. If it's been painted you can repaint it but washing is impractical due to the coarseness of the material. If it has not been painted and does not contain asbestos, it is relatively simple, but exceedingly messy, to scrape it off. I just scraped an unpainted popcorn ceiling last spring. You will find the taping job under the popcorn to be less than satisfactory but it can be easily remedied by applying additional coats of drywall mud to the joints and fasteners. I would require a $1500.00 reduction in the price of the home from the seller so you can hire the work done. If you're not a professional drywall contractor, as I have been since 1960, you don't want the hassle of this job. Good luck!

What is the best way to hand cover the cracked ceilings, texture, acoustic or any other product for 2008?
Mar 02, 2008 by Curious Anne | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I'm assuming your cracked ceiling is plaster, which will inevitably develop cracks. Screw drywall over the ceiling, making sure the screws go at least an inch into the joists. You can use 1/2" drywall if the joist spacing is 16" or less, otherwise use 5/8" drywall. The screw spacing is 12". Tape and texture as you would any drywall ceiling. If you don't want to tape the corners at the walls, install crown moulding instead.
