I live in central Florida where it is in the 90's, however, I keep the AC running at 80, and the fan running sometimes, and the house is extremely cool.
I just moved into a new house with very high cathedral ceilings.
Is that the reason the house stays cool because the ceiling is so high?
The warmer air would rise into the ceiling areas above 8', and
you would be feeling the cooler air at the lower level. You could use a thermometer to record the temperature in both areas and compare. It might just be you have a very efficient cooling system and house.

How do I know if my ceilings are cathedral or not?
May 21, 2008 by CC | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
I'm moving into a new apartment that claims its ceilings are cathedral (a big selling point, obviously), but they seem to be standard height to me...
Can cathedral ceilings be defined just by a certain height or is it the style? Is my leg getting pulled here??
Cathedral means they aren't flat. Do they have a slope to them ? If so they are Cathedral.

We have cathedral/vaulted ceilings. I was wondering in the winter/summer months which was should our ceiling fan be turning. Since heat rises in the winter wouldn't we want it pushed down?? I don't know...please help.
The correct answer is ti have the fan turning counter-clockwise in the summer and clockwise in the winter.

What is the cheapest and best way to install an island stove and sink in a home with cathedral ceilings?
May 20, 2007 by Linda B | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I would like to add an island in my home that includes a sink and a stove. I would like to have the exhaust unnoticeable, preferably under the flooring but I have a concrete foundation and cathedral ceilings. Can this be done without demantling my home and without selling my first born?
What you want is a downdraft ventilation system. The vent would actually be recessed into the cabinet unit until you need it and then it basically glides up.
I imagine that you're do a complete remodel because you want a sink in the island. Everything else would be relatively inexpensive, but the plumbing has the potential to be expensive because I dont know where the plumbing lines are located.
It also features numerous skylights, exposed beams, cathedral and vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors in most rooms. The 1.18-acre property includes a

Compatible with Incomparable ceiling mounts, EXT and ADJ extension columns
Necessary for Peerless mounts on a vaulted ceiling
If you want to use a Peerless mount to attach your projector to your ceiling and that ceiling happens to be vaulted, this product isn't only useful, it's also required. The build quality is typical of other Peerless accessories: strong. In my opinion, the price is a little steep for what is essentially two pieces of metal and some screws, but when you've just spent thousands on a home theater setup, what's another $30 or so?
Installation is straightforward, assuming that you have some minimal handyman abilities. (Perhaps too big of an assumption to make after reading reviews of some other Peerless mounts.) I installed directly to a wood joist in the ceiling, and a slight tug on the adapter confirmed that it isn't going *anywhere*. Make sure you have a good stud finder, tall enough ladder, electric drill, and a socket set.
In addition to the mount itself, you'll also need an extension column (Peerless part number EXT-XXX) that attaches in between this cathedral adapter and the mounting plate. When measuring to figure out how long of an extension column you'll need, don't forget to factor in the height of this adapter plus the height of your projector with mounting plate attached. I was too generous the first time around and ended up getting a 2-ft extension for a 9-ft ceiling, except that I'm a 6'3" guy. It only took one smack of my head on the projector before I ordered a shorter column.

Install a skylight
09.09.10
Prized Pat: I live in a one-life story house with a coordinated roof. I requirement to add a skylight in my living space, but there is a tall attic above it. Is it still shit to add a skylight, and how do I do it? — Ginny F.
Beloved Ginny: The putting together of a skylight, predominantly in a smaller domicile, is one of the most common dwelling improvement projects. The expense is relatively low and it is a comprehensible do-it-yourself project. Also, the brightness from a skylight can mould a small dwelling appear much more capacious.
The installation system for putting a skylight in the roof over a elbow-room with an attic above is the same as in a scope with a cathedral ceiling. The only dissimilitude is, you will have to build a excavate from the skylight in the roof to the ceiling in your living chamber. This tunnel is called a lightwell.
First, settle on the style of skylight you have a yen for. The basic options are definite glass or domed fake, and either can be venting or definite. Glass is more overpriced but provides a trusty view of the sky. Depending upon how profound your lightwell has to be, though, this may not be a pithy advantage.
A domed shapable skylight is less up-market and lightweight, making it easier to fit. The same amount of light comes through as from a window-pane skylight, but the objective is distorted. Another advantageously is that plastic uncomplicatedly blocks the sun’s ultraviolet fading rays. A venting skylight is superb if you use natural ventilation during the non-heating seasons.
The next interfere is to determine the gauge you desire. A on the loose skylight in a pocket-sized room may generate too much glare and look odd. It also wastes more forcefulness, even if it has double or triple panes. One that’s too minor will be ineffective for lighting. Multiply the quadrilateral footage of your area by 0.045 to get a recommended on a par footage for the skylight.
