How to remedy drop tile ceilings?
Mar 17, 2008 by Steph Z | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I'm buying a home with drop tile ceilings in the kitchen and living room. I hate the look of them, but I don't have the money to completely remodel. What would be the least expensive way to deal with my dilemma?
Have a look up above - if the plasterwork is in good condition and there is nothing strange going on - just rip out the suspended ceiling, fill any fixing holes and repaint. If there is a load of pipework and wiring, I would be inclined to ditch the old tiles and skin over with something lightweight like 3/8ths ply - fix with self tapping screws to the grid and fuly support the joints - paint and fill (easier if you do some of the paint and fill before installing) this will look like a conventional ceiling.

I would use texture to spray over the suspended ceiling. Or you could take the tile out and paint them so you would have a checkered ceiling to match the colors of the room... You can also paint the main Ts and cross Ts

Sorry, but if you can't afford to fix it you can't afford the house.

I had drop tile in my finished basement. I recently removed the tiles to find that the exposed wood and beams in the ceiling added lots of character to the room. Granted this may not be something you want to do with a kitchen and LR but I love the look of it in my basement.

We actually painted out ceiling tiles. We ruined them with a kerosene heater and needed a fix. Went to Home Depot and they were very helpful. Did you know you can order covers for the cross bar sections that are holding the ceiling tiles up? We painted the tiles a wood color from the room and ordered the cross bars in black. Looks pretty sharp. It's alot of work though. We waited until summer to do it on the back porch and let them dry outside. Ask what roller is best depending on the depth on the whole pattern in the tile.

What is the special material used for school ceilings? the nonflammable tile-like material? thanks?

Does anyone know of the special material that is used in schools for the ceiling? It's a type of tyle material and it seems to me that it is non flammable..
Do you also know of any alternatives to drywall that are non flammable? thanks alot
acoustic ceiling boards. It is fire-resistive with acoustic properties. It's also a practical solution for institutions requiring above-ceiling pipe maintenance on a regular basis.

trying to cover up the grooves in between the tiles so they cant be seen. has anyone ever done this or had it done? trying to save the expense of sheetrocking the entire house.
yes but prime them first try using knockdown instead of popcorn you get the same coverage without the popcorn mess

Can tiled ceilings be mudded and painted?
Aug 03, 2007 by scotiacraftworks | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I am buying a house that has the 12' tiles on the ceilings. can the seams be mudded and sanded and then painted? or will the sanding tear the tiles?
You are better off to remove the tiles and put up some sheet rock (gypsum board). Or lay in some furring strips and attach the sheet rock to that. You won't be able to sand the tiles. They are just made of fiber and will get torn up.
