DIY'ers: is there a better direction for laying wood tongue and groove on ceilings and floors?

Mar 01, 2007 by Mary L | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

Should the planks be laid running along the longest wall? Is it a matter of preference?

you usually put them up or down, the length of the room. it is the perfered way. also your floor joists and celing joists run the short way accross the room. thats where your nailers are. if you must go the other direction, you would have to install strapping first. no on the floor tho,as you are nailing it onto a sub-floor anyways.

We have just finished our ceiling and it is pfrefernce which ever way you you like it to go.

you lay then down the lenght of the room . this is because the floor could settle over time and this means fewer boards would come up

It's the same as stripey garments on a healthy lady..The direction you lay the boards gives you a visual illusion to the size of the room..i.e: if you lay them along the longest wall it will make the room look longer and thinner....
However, can i advise you try a different ceiling treatment? It is a very dated look, and unless you want your guests to look at your room and think, 'Oh my god, call the pine police!' keep the ceiling simple...

It depends on the look you are after. The easiest is to lay it the long way

It really is your preference and depends on the size of the room. However, there are some compelling reasons to lay them running parallel to the longest wall.

1. You will have an easier installation and have to make less cuts.
2. Less cuts normally mean less waste and that saves money.
3. You will have less seems and less boards. This means that the total coefficient of elongation across the boards will be less. That way, there is less of a chance that you could end up with bowing or cracking boards.

If I were you, I would lay them parallel to the longest wall.

DIrection is a matter of prefference. Long wise, in a diagional or straight at the peak. If you have really good wood you can make very interesting patterns with the grain and lines!

lay them across the joists. if you go the same direction as the joists on a floor the floor is more likly to develop high and low spots.

Garage conversion DIY can you help what are legal requirements for walls, floors, ceiling.?

Jun 25, 2007 by john h | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

Garage conversion DIY can you help what are legal requirements for walls, floors, ceiling. I understand that for ceilings you need insulation laid both ways.Do you need to fix a waterproof membrane to walls etc.

I can't know if you live in the US or UK, but Duffer has the intial clue.

"Codes", while standardized for many things, can vary through municipalities and depend on specific location, materials available and suggested, etc.

Certainly "Membranes" are usual on either block or frame construction, JUST INSIDE the exterior wall or most often OUTSIDE (On wood frame) to barrier against moisture to a degree. To add "Tyvek" or similar to the outside surface of an interior wall (facing the insulation, is ill effective, and most often Batting/ Paper covered, rolled insulation is barrier material anyway. You'd do well to seal the existing floor, even lay a barrier, and construct a floor above that.

Insulation BOTH WAYS??? Hmmm??? I'll assume you mean roll type? I'd do blown in, in any case, but the issue is what R values ANY insulation will offer, especially if a garage room has no room over it, only roof or crawl space/trusses.

Anything else you do is just as you would for any interior room in the house. You say this is a conversion, and from an existing garage, but you don't state if the existing walls and ceiling of the space are OPEN to the studs, or finished IE: Drywall. You'll also,,, I assume, remove the garage door, re frame that area, and finish appropriately.

has anyone attempted to DIY a room addition?

Sep 05, 2006 by MANGA | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

I thinking of building an addtion in front of my home, to extend the living room, something simple, maybe 18x20, cathedral ceilings, one wall all glass, two windows, and entry door, what would be the cost in materials? labor if i need to hire electricians, etc?

First thing is to ask yourself - are you able to do this yourself? Do you know anything about framing or construction? do you know building codes? Permitting?

I would suggest getting bids first and ask the contractors questions. Then look at what parts of the job you think you can do yourself. Shop around and find out what the windows an other materials cost.

If your handy, this sounds like a good project. If your asking questions like "do I need an electrician" & "material costs" then you might want to have a contractor do it. They should warrenty the work and you'll save time and money.

Remember : measure twice & cut once.

Does anyone know any cheap diy plasterer courses in Surrey?

Aug 15, 2006 by De h | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

Hi

Im looking to learn the basics of plastering enought to be able to plasterboard and skim walls and ceilings for my own house so i don't have to use linning paper on walls?

Any help or offers, I live in Addlestone, Surrey UK

Thanks

Dave
Can anyone help further??

Drywall isn't difficult. Go to a hardware store and read about it in a do-it-yourself book. One trick I will tell you is thin the joint compound slightly and mix it well. Make it like heavy waffle batter. Use several thin coats, keeping it smooth. Let it dry and repeat process after sanding off the rough edges. Good Luck

How difficult is it to rock an existing sheetrock fireplace?

Jul 02, 2007 by devinedesignonabudget | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

The area is approx. 11ft. tall 5ft wide and 2ft deep. My husband and I have done many DIY projects, (tiled, tin ceilings, etc) We are just wondering if this one is too difficult. We like the stack rock look. Can anyone offer suggestions on ways we can fit this into our budget. (which is minimal, lol!) or can estimate a cost of having this professionally done?

Cost would vary depending on the type of stone and the part of the country you live in. However, Owens Corning makes a cultured stone product that looks like real stone. They have a variety of colors and styles to choose from. This product is also DIY friendly and very easy to work with.
