is there anything that works like stripper to aid in removing texture from drywall ceilings.?

May 20, 2007 by shaggy | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs

The short answer is , no. Use a 4 inch taping knife (the kind that looks like a big wide putty knife) and scrape off what you can. The point here is not to completely remove the stuff but, just to knock of the peaks or 'popcorn'. Next, top coat the ceiling with drywall compound to fill in, and smooth over the now rough texture. Sand smooth. If is still seems a little rough, add another thin coat of compound and sand again. It's a pain, but without putting up another layer of drywall or replacing what's there, it's the only way.
Keep smilin', you can do it!

To work like a stripper, all it takes is a little rhythm.

I'm not sure what you mean by "drywall" ceiling texture. Do you mean popcorn?

http://www.ehow.com/tips_15096.html

If it is not too heavily coated it is pretty easy but time consuming to just spray with hot water and use a scraper or drywall knife. Do small areas at a time soaking with hot water softens and dissolves the compound and makes it easy to remove the majority of it. Some sanding will be needed for a real smooth ceiling along with some repair. I did this to mine and it looks so much better.

Can I cover our “dated” Texture ceilings?

Jul 16, 2007 by Thomas Z | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

Our home was built in 1978 and most of the ceilings throughout the house have a textured ceiling. Not necessarily “popcorn ceiling”, but it looks like they plastered it and then make sponge imprints to give it a texture….oh, and then they added sparkles…some a nice touch…NOT! Anyway, I know that it would be a huge pain and mess to actually scrape every ceiling and repaint. I was thinking about getting some drywall and installing it right over top of the texture ceiling. Are there any problems with me doing this? Thanks!

it would be much easier to just skim coat the ceiling and cover the rough texture with a smooth surface you would have to do this after putting up new sheetrock to hide the joints and nails anyway

Do you have to spackle ceilings if you are doing to add texture?

Jul 07, 2008 by sayds19 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs

My husband and I are finishing our addition and are completing the drywall ourselves. We plan on using texture on the ceilings, so do we have to spackle? If we have to spackle is it necessary to sand before we put the texture on? We are planning on using texture because the existing rooms already have it. It isn't the popcorn texture, it appears to be a thick material stamped on the ceiling.

Thanks!

u need to finish it as if u were painting...but dont use spackle use sheetrock mud, USG is a good brand.....mud, tape, mud, sand, mud, sand.....

The tape around the drywall ceilings in our house is coming down. How do I fix it?

Nov 03, 2007 by goddessusie | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs

The ceiling is textured, so I can't just put spackle on top because it wouldn't look right. I'm afraid if I try to glue it or put cauk under the edges, it will cause the drywall on the ceiling to flake off. The only thing I can think of is to put crown molding up against the ceiling to cover and hold it up. Any other ideas? Thanks for your help!!
BTW, the texture in the ceiling is the texture that looks like arcs using a comb-type applicator.

It wouldn't flake, you could try using the glue used for wallpaper and/or just nail it in!
Remember to wear safety glasses before hand :)

What is the purpose of texturing drywall?

Mar 10, 2007 by femtch | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling

Just wondering about the history of texturing ceilings, walls, etc. It's not especially attractive and I wondered if it serves any purpose.

Well, before you paint drywall you have to prime it ( to seal the drywall, so when you paint it doesn't absorb unevenly, making your walls basically look like crap.) Most drywall primer is available with or without texture and because drywall is a very smooth surface, it helps to hide imperfections on the walls, or you can texture just to give your walls a different look.

Great tool with some tweeking
This makes removing popcorn ceiings much easier on the shoulders and arms. You do have to empty the trash bag frequently as the wet popcorn gets heavy. We decided to tweek the tool, however. I found that the sharp corners tended to gouge the ceiling. We used a grinder to round off the corners and no longer had that problem. Perhaps the manufacturer should hear this suggestion.
NOT BAD,,,,,,,,,, BUT COULD BE BETTER
A great idea but defiinetly not designed for those who do this for a living. I started to scrape the ceiling with a floor scraper I purchased a Home Depot. It has a blade similar to a tapers knife, but a little sturdier. What a mess, and way too heavy! I ran across the Homax scraper in Lowes and decided to give it a try. I sprayed a 6' x 6' section with water with a garden sprayer. I attached a 13 gal. trash bag to the holder with the clips included and went to work.

I was supprised how easily it scraped off texture and how well the texture fell into the bag. The 13 gal. bag I used was way to large to use with this tool. As it fills, it tends to swing too much causing you to slow `till the bag stops swinging. A plastic bag for a bathroom waste basket will be a better choice.

As far as the design is concerned, after finishing one section the tool progressivly bent at the point where the handle meets the blade. The metal really needs to be of a heavier gauge to prevent this.

The frame that holds the bag could have been designed with a slightly larger opening to catch more of the texture but even still, the ammount that fell on the floor was still minimal. The frame is designed to give-way as you cut-in by the walls. This is noted by the lack of extra spot welds where it attaches to the blade unit. The only drawback to this is that the frame needs to be made of better spring steel as the bag frame bends back from pressing into the walls and eventually doesn't return to the original position. The scraping blade could be a bit wider also, but no big deal.

Overall, this is a nice tool for the do-it-yourselfer but not for the contractor. It's just too weak to hold up to everyday use. It took me an hour to scrape a 10x10 area, a reasonable length of time, but I had to keep bending the tool back into position. Clean up was still at a minimum.

I think a home owner will be reasonably satisfied with The Homax Scraper and with a couple of modifications, a contractor can make efficient use by not having to climb up and down ladders for an entire job.

Save your time and money...
I bought this tool a few days ago to remove the popcorn from the ceiling in my hallway with hopes of later doing about 1000sq.ft+. living area. Needless to say, based on the star rating, I was really disappointed. Here are the problems:

1. Without keeping a "proper" angle you'll either scratch the ceiling or get stuck (since the edge of the tool must be kept flat against the ceiling and this is impossible to see with the bag in the way).
2. Must use a short ladder to see what's going on and using a handle means you lose control (it's much harder to scrape and it would constantly rotate on the handle no matter how tightly I secured it).
3. Once you go over about 5-10sq ft of popcorn (and mine was pretty light) the bag weights at least a pound or so which makes it that much harder to control the scraper.
4. Most of the popcorn is caught but some is not, so you should still protect the floors/walls and will need to vacuum everything up.
5. Due to the way the "frame" holds the bag in place it's impossible to reach corners and I've actually left black marks on my freshly plastered walls because of the black plastic that holds the bag in place.

Bottom line: I bought this thing expecting it to speed up the job but instead I ended up spending more time futzing around with this tool. I had to finish the job with a putty knife (much faster, with more control and it left a much cleaner ceiling). It was a bit more messy but there was plenty of mess anyway and I got tired of standing on the ladder for an hour looking at the ceiling.

Save your time and money.
Makes the Job Easy
This tool allowed me to scrape 300 sq. ft. ceiling in just over an hour. You will still need a putty knife (at least 4") to get the edges and corners since the frame for the bag extends beyond the scraper edge. After the edges and corners are done, you can get the rest of the work done while standing on the floor. I found doing this (obviously with an extension pole) gave me a lot more leverage and enabled me to take off 10'-12' rows at a time with virtually no effort. Anyone who says this product doesn't work simply doesn't have enough sense to use it correctly. While this catches a lot of what comes down, it won't catch all of it so covering your walls and floors is a must. Unlike a putty or taping knife like some here recommend, you won't be coated in a thick veneer of popcorn ceiling with this tool. Lastly, I paid $15.00 for this tool at Lowe's so check there first.

FOLLOW-UP: While I recommend this tool overall, people under about 5' 9" will have trouble using it except from a ladder on just 8' ceilings.
"Selling point" of tool not realistic
I've scraped the popcorn ceilings off all the ceiling in my house. I bought this when I started, thinking it would help. I've since switched over to a 10" taping knife instead.

Sure you *can* attach a plastic bag to it while you're scraping, but it won't catch everything and the weight of the bag as it fills up will hinder effective scraping of the ceiling, increasing the liklihood of gouging. Bottom line: Scraping popcorn ceilings is messy business - put down painter's plastic and go at it.

Far better IMO is to simply use a 10" or 12" taping knife (like a putty knife, except lots wider). I still use a 2" and 4" taping knife for getting around light fixtures easily.

Although the ability to attach a handle and avoid climbing up and down a ladder may seem appealing at first, it reduces the control of the scraper and increases the liklihood of gouging the ceiling. Better to use a bench of some sort to reach those typical 8 or 9' ceilings. Also, the bag attachment make it impossible to scrape parallel to the edges of the room (to avoid getting under the joint tape).

Excellent resource for homeowners
This is a great book! Just about everything having to do with finishing walls is here -- there is even a helpful chapter on framing a partition wall if you are feeling ambitious. The instructions are straightforward and sequenced well. Each section has a materials list that includes alternatives. All phases of the instructions are illustrated with clear, uncluttered photographs. I had this book from the library, and renewed it too many times to count! Customer Reviews

Product pictured is not the actual item
I have to say my experience with this company was negative from start to finish. When the item arrived, it wasn't the item pictured on the website. The hopper pictured appears much sturdier than what was sent. The instructions which were one page with two sides, pictured yet another completely different gun. The company's website boasts that they have customer service 7 days a week, but 2 times when I called on the weekend, I was told to call back on Monday. When I did get someone to confirm that they had sent the correct gun, they went back to the warehouse and pulled the same item and said there must've been a model change, and the same instructions picturing the incorrect gun were included. The best guess of the person I talked to was that the instructions were generic and meant for several different models. Since I'd never used a gun like this, I was hoping for a little more info on how to use it, but it was really basic info, and of no real help. The refund process also seemed to take an incredibly long amount of time. Ultimately, I bought a Homax 4610 Pneumatic ll Spray Texture Gun from Lowe's. This gun does feel like flimsy plastic, but it's seemed to do the job, and I have to say, I've been more impressed with this gun, than my prior purchase.
Product was not the item pictured
The texture gun pictured was not the same one we received. There was no hose included, the gun & the hopper were all different than pictured. My husband revamped the gun & put on a shut off valve, which really helped! It did a nice job of texturing & was easy to use. Shipping was very fast. After we "modified" the gun with the shut off valve, we are very happy with it. I just think it would be more professional to actually send the unit that is pictured.
Great Product
I utilized this product to spray a water proof cocrete repair product to my existing block wall. My block wall looks like a stuco block now. I love it the diferent spray sizes that are on the spary gun. It works well to apply a heavy coat or a thin coat. Exellent product Thank You...
Air Texture Hopper
Perfect product for spraying all types of texures, very handy settings on sprayer for type of texture you want, no parts to keep track of....Everything you need is on the gun
air texture spray hopper
Excellent vender to deal with. Spray gun I received did not work right, were very reponsive to e-mails and sent return authorization, replaced the product right away with a working one. Was very impressed with service & would certainly buy from again. Great customer service, lightning fast shipping, and reasonably priced products. Highly recommend.

Homax 4070 Drywall Texture - Acoustic Ceiling

Customer Reviews

you'll be sorry
STAY AWAY FROM THIS CRAP AT ALL COSTS!! This junk sprays out uncontrollably in all directions and is BROWN! Do you like brown ceilings? I sure don't! What a mess I've got to clean up now. My advice is to scrape off your popcorn ceilings and and never go popcorn again!
What a Mess!
I used the Acoustic Texture product for patching "popcorn" type ceilings and what a mess it was! The nozzle on the bottle didn't control the distribution of product very well and it splattered every which way. Approximately half of the gloppy product fell off the ceiling and ended up on the floor. After a few sprays, which is about all that is in one can, I had plastery ceiling texture all over me. In the end, it covered only a couple of relatively small areas on my ceiling. I spent quite a bit of time wiping down my entire bathroom afterwords. The only good thing about it is that it does clean up relatively easily. I wouldn't purchase this again.

Thin crack in ceiling can be repaired easily

I have a second running across the ceiling located in the center of my ranch-luxury home. What causes this?

Ceiling cracks are customarily caused by some put straight of movement associated with the system of the house.

It might be that the shelter is settling or that the boards used to bent the house is starting to dry out and wince. If the cracks are larger than 1/16 of an inch fully, it may mean you have endowment problems. In that protection I would contact a virtuous contractor to gain an assessment. If the shot is smaller than 1/16 of an inch broad, you can easily renewal it by applying fiberglass drywall tape recording and then finishing with a guide drywall joint also fuze.

If the ceiling is textured, you will have to reapply the texture to combine your existing ceiling. I upon this the best way to servicing small cracks, but an another would be to apply a paintable caulk into the cracks and then warpaint. The whole key to this is the size of the flaw. Less than 1/16 inch fully can easily be repaired, but anything wider than 1/16 inch should coerce the assistance of a trained.
