Tin Ceilings?

May 21, 2008 by mis_astro | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling

We have purchased a house built in the 1800's and the ceilings are the ornate tin ceilings. Someone has painted them white and when i picked a little bit off they look tarnished-for lack of a better word.

How can I restore then to their original state?

Stripping paint off a tin ceiling is a big job. There are products you lather on with a plastic putty knife, cover with a special paper, wait, and then peel away. But that's the easy part. Getting all the paint out of the ceiling's nook's crannies is the hardest part. An easy-sounding solution such as sandblasting will only destroy the surface. Also, old tin ceilings are often covered with several coats of lead paint and dealing with that stuff calls for a great deal of care. For more information on lead paint, call the EPA lead information hotline at 800-424-LEAD.

But you might not want to strip the ceiling anyway. According to one preservation expert who studies tin ceilings, they were first manufactured in the 1870s and were almost always painted:

If the existing paint on the ceiling is in good shape--not flaking or peeling off--I would recommend putting two coats of primer over the existing paint, and then re-painting the ceiling with a metallic paint in a platnium color, which is close to the color of new tin ceilings. There are also many other colors such as bronze and copper paints if you would prefer another color.

I wouldn't take chances with something as valuable as that. I would contact an antique dealer or someone who specializes in antiquities to ask them. I know that they often use chalk paste to shine and buff the metal, but you would not want to take chances and ruin the tin. Chalk paste is made from finely ground chalk, like the stuff you use on a chalk board, mixed with a little water to make a thick paste from it. It's what they have used in museums for decades before there were any of these new concoctions.

flaking and look a mess. Is there some special kind of sealant to apply first? Then what kind of paint should be applied? Is there special "tin ceiling paint", if not, gloss paint? Thanks for input.

Unfortunately, who ever painted them in the first place probably didn't use primer nor a paint specifically formulated for metal. Now you have to sand off the loose and peeling paint, prime and repaint. I do not recommend using any of the commercially made paint strippers because they are difficult to use on raised patterns as the scraping often damages the design and the mess it will create is not worth it (Plus, most are extremely toxic, have horrible fumes and will drip.)

There are specially formulated paints for metal that will adhere and perform better. Rustoleum is one that has both a primer and paints that come in a variety of colors and are long lasting and durable. In any case, you are in for a lot of work because working on the ceiling is such a chore.

Do you have tin ceilings in your home? Are they old or did you install them or have them installed?

If you put them up yourself, what was the reason? How do you feel about them? I put them up in everyroom but the bathroom. I love them. They're look old and nostalgic and are so impressive. Just wondering if anyone out there has them and if they feel as I do?

I had a damaged ceiling in my kitchen and dining room. I covered the ceilings with old used tin from a barn. I covered one entire wall with old barnwood and then used barnwood for all the trim. It looks great and I've recieved many compliments on the nostalgic look.

Where can I find a source for wood veneers, stamped tin ceilings, artistic columns, and woodworking tools?

I had a catalog a few years ago very thick and detailed that had all of this, but do not remember the name of the supplier.

Which reminds me, watch for a new project rebranding the Sunshine Affirm which Halimah and I are working on together. This place needs a little coppers, why not live it rather than talk about it like everyone else around us does?!

Working on a redesign for my fellowship’s website. The American Tin Ceiling Company will be reconfiguring its homepage with some unsophisticated designs. It’s been a little overdue, but its better recent then never.

I have also done this for Halimah and will be looking into the project Nate and I took on for Imaginative Loafing in Sarasota.

I am very excited to be able to go on vacation with my two very close friends, something I have never done before. Tobey Albright and Claire Michelson will be in Hanover, Germany so its positive to be a lot of fun. I am most excited to see the Bauhaus Museum, something my education was based on in college. It will certainly make for a bunch of great posts in the future.

Customer Reviews

Awesome Company!
Fantastic product! Timely shipping and very fast response to emails! Love my new kitchen ceiling! Would highly recommend and would use again!
What a way to go!
The best price for a great product and we received the shipment in record time. It looks absolutely great installed.
They lie about shipping time-took 30 days to get
On their own FAQ website page they have this question and answer:

12. Why does it take 15 days to receive my order?
Every product we ship is custom made using our proprietary manufacturing process. That's why we are able to offer over 100 patterns in 11 specialty finishes, more than any of our competitors. Our goal is to ship all orders within 7 business days. Due to the popularity of our products, however, we sometimes require a little longer than 7 days. If you need to have your order shipped sooner, please call our customer service department and let us know. In most instances we will be able to accommodate reasonable shipping dates.

After waiting 16 days with no shipping update, I emailed them and was told it would not ship for 20 days and then would take another 8-10 to receive. When I tried to cancel because of the longer wait they told me I would be charged 25% restocking charge, even though they told me it had not been manufactured yet.

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY! THEY ARE NOT HONEST!
