Tin Ceilings?
May 21, 2008 by mis_astro | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
We have purchased a house built in the 1800's and the ceilings are the ornate tin ceilings. Someone has painted them white and when i picked a little bit off they look tarnished-for lack of a better word.
How can I restore then to their original state?
Stripping paint off a tin ceiling is a big job. There are products you lather on with a plastic putty knife, cover with a special paper, wait, and then peel away. But that's the easy part. Getting all the paint out of the ceiling's nook's crannies is the hardest part. An easy-sounding solution such as sandblasting will only destroy the surface. Also, old tin ceilings are often covered with several coats of lead paint and dealing with that stuff calls for a great deal of care. For more information on lead paint, call the EPA lead information hotline at 800-424-LEAD.
But you might not want to strip the ceiling anyway. According to one preservation expert who studies tin ceilings, they were first manufactured in the 1870s and were almost always painted:

If the existing paint on the ceiling is in good shape--not flaking or peeling off--I would recommend putting two coats of primer over the existing paint, and then re-painting the ceiling with a metallic paint in a platnium color, which is close to the color of new tin ceilings. There are also many other colors such as bronze and copper paints if you would prefer another color.

I wouldn't take chances with something as valuable as that. I would contact an antique dealer or someone who specializes in antiquities to ask them. I know that they often use chalk paste to shine and buff the metal, but you would not want to take chances and ruin the tin. Chalk paste is made from finely ground chalk, like the stuff you use on a chalk board, mixed with a little water to make a thick paste from it. It's what they have used in museums for decades before there were any of these new concoctions.

flaking and look a mess. Is there some special kind of sealant to apply first? Then what kind of paint should be applied? Is there special "tin ceiling paint", if not, gloss paint? Thanks for input.
Unfortunately, who ever painted them in the first place probably didn't use primer nor a paint specifically formulated for metal. Now you have to sand off the loose and peeling paint, prime and repaint. I do not recommend using any of the commercially made paint strippers because they are difficult to use on raised patterns as the scraping often damages the design and the mess it will create is not worth it (Plus, most are extremely toxic, have horrible fumes and will drip.)
There are specially formulated paints for metal that will adhere and perform better. Rustoleum is one that has both a primer and paints that come in a variety of colors and are long lasting and durable. In any case, you are in for a lot of work because working on the ceiling is such a chore.

Do you have tin ceilings in your home? Are they old or did you install them or have them installed?

If you put them up yourself, what was the reason? How do you feel about them? I put them up in everyroom but the bathroom. I love them. They're look old and nostalgic and are so impressive. Just wondering if anyone out there has them and if they feel as I do?
I had a damaged ceiling in my kitchen and dining room. I covered the ceilings with old used tin from a barn. I covered one entire wall with old barnwood and then used barnwood for all the trim. It looks great and I've recieved many compliments on the nostalgic look.
