Can I paint dated glazed ceramic bathroom tile?
Jan 24, 2008 by buckeye_babe95 | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
My main bathroom is all tile, peach colored. I was wondering if there was paint that I would be able to use to effectively cover it---it is also in the shower and will get wet daily. The floor is also tile but a slightly different yet still ceramic tile, also peach but a little darker. I was hoping to just get a more neutral color that will get us through the next 5 years until we can remodel with updated tile.......so sick of peach.......
Yes you can paint them as long as you use the right product. Many universities have done studies on a product called Jaxsan. It is manufactured by a company called Plastic Coatings Corporation in Saint Albans, West Virginia. They can tint their products to match any color that Sherwin Williams has. They buy their dyes from the same company. I would recommend Jaxsan AG-102 for your project. It only comes in Super Gloss and is Bright White unless another color is requested. They do not have a web site as of yet. You can reach them at (304)755-9151 and someone will probably give me some crap for posting their number but I can assure you it is ok. Ask for Greg and explain to him what your objective is and he will be able to tell you if their product will be appropriate for your application and what you will need to do for preparing the surface. Greg is the company chemist. They sell by the gallon, by the bucket, or by the drum. Special order colors cost a bit more and will delay shipping. Good luck, I hope it turns out nice. Search engine the name Jaxsan for university study results.
By the way this is a water base product and it has been used to repair swimming pools and it never failed. You can get it wet all you want and it won't hurt it.

You can get the tiles reglazed another color, like cream or white. Getting the bathroom retiled is alot cheaper than you think. Maybe $300-$500 for conservative tiles and labor.

You can paint ceramic tiles providing you use the correct products, the primer is very important, but I doubt if it would be suitable for the floor.

Yes, if you use an epoxy paint.

They do make paints that will work but the problem is getting the shower area clean enough to hold the paint. Any bit of soap scum or mildew will make the paint peel back in that spot. Check with Sherwin Williams they have different type of coatings that will go over ceramic tile and special cleaners to use first. Good Luck

Yes, you can paint ceramic tiles but you need to be sure to prepare the surface properly and use the right paint.
The only place you won't be able to paint on the tile is in the shower because it is made wet daily thus the paint will peel in those areas.
This webpage will give you details on how to do this:
http://www.askthebuilder.com/651_Painting_Ceramic_Tile.shtml
It will require you get OIL-based paint for the color you want on the tile. And you will need a clear WATER-based urethane to coat over the oil-based coat to seal it.
This website also talks about the type of paints to consider and how you might want to do art designs on them too.
Hope this helps.

Has anyone heard of a paint for ceramic bathroom tile?
Jun 14, 2008 by Debbie | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
saw a show years ago where they painted the ceramic bathroom tile with a special paint designed for that purpose, once dried it was supposed to be waterproof.everyone says im crazy,no such paint.any one heard of it ?
Lowe's & Home Depot carry the white epoxy paint from Homax brands.
You will find other colors of Epoxy paint from your local Hobby Lobby, AC Moore or Michael's. Follow the instructions as epoxy paint is no fun if not done right.

Any recycling ideas for white bathroom ceramic tile.?
Mar 26, 2006 by meoohmy | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
We are about to remodel the bathroom and I will have alot of white ceraminc tile (4 x 4 size) in good condition left over. I would hate to throw it away. I am planning to make a backsplash in the kitchen but there will be alot more left over! I would love ideas for the garden, house or patio. Any websites that have ideas or pictures of ideas would be appreciated too! I am pretty good with crafts and garden work. Thanks!

How do I remove grit from glazed ceramic bathroom tile?
Mar 01, 2007 by Ken | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I recently had the fiberglass bathtub in my bathroom reglazed. While glazing, the contractor also seemed to get some of the glazing material all over my tiled bathroom floor. Now the floor feels gritty and always looks dirty. How can I remove this grit without damaging the tile? Thanks!
Check with the contractor to see if the glaze is latex or something else. Be careful what you use, cause if the solvent is too strong, it will bleach the color of the floor tile. What does the contractor recommend? I would be afraid to recommend something without knowing more about the glaze.

Is there a way to paint old ceramic bathroom tile?
Jan 14, 2007 by Hilary L | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
the house is 80 years old. It has origanal tile but is really ugly. The tile is in great shap. Is thereany way we can avoid taking it out and painting over it.
With no offense to you or any other answers you get, "DON'T!"
After installing thousands of sq. ft. of tile, applying thousands of gallons of paint, and being a clay sculptor firing the work, I suggest it's like trying to paint GLASS. Not only that but it's a FLOOR.
Since you don't strictly define "ugly" and obviously have another theme in mind, removal is one way to proceed. In an 80 year old house I personally would want to know the substrate anyway.
Also without detail of what level the bath is on, I can't know the substrate possibilities.
Certainly you can add another sub floor, vene over the existing tile, and start over. I wouldn't, but it's an option.
Another option, especially if the floor is stable, might be a room size carpet, even if only to hide the tile?
I promise you, no matter waht anyone says here, and with no offense to them, you'll regret painting tile.
