What is the best mothod for cutting ceramic tile (for fine art use)?
Mar 12, 2009 by Caroline B | Posted in Other - Visual Arts
I am creating a mosaic and need ceramic tiles that are approx. 1/4" x 1/4" to 1" x 1". Doing this on the cheap, so power tools are out of the question. I love the idea of using abstract shapes from broken tiles and tips for that process are welcome as well. Any ideas? Thank you for your contributions!
Get a tile knife, score them along the back and then break them along a straight edge or over a small tube like a ball point pen. A little sand paper will clean up any rough edges.

I agree with David. And make sure you wear protective gloves.

If you wang regular rectangle tiles, I suggest you order some tiles form your local dealer, it should be few dollors per pound. very cheap resources.
If you dont need regular tiles, just use a hammer to knock them down. of course you need wear some protections for both your hand and eyes.
by the way, if you need a software tool for your pattern design, you may get a Easy Mosaic from http://www.ezmosaic.com

How to hang ceramic tile?
Jan 24, 2009 by Sarah H | Posted in Sculpture
Your Question
How to hang ceramic tile?
I just moved into an old apartment with plaster walls. I have a 6 tile ceramic art piece that i want to hang on the wall and i was curious to see if anyone had any suggestions on how to hang it. .. such as special screws nails or other hanging method? I have hung it before using nails and bending them over the tile, but it was messy and created many holes in the wall. The tiles do have small holes in the back but are not secure enough when you hang them using just those holes.
I've seen tiles and plates safely hung by gluing a wire, strong piece of string or a hook onto the back with epoxy glue. Be generous with the glue.
Drawback, it would be really hard to remove if you don't want it any more, but as it's on the back it shouldn't bother you. Make sure the hook or string doesn't show from front.

I want to find broken or discontinued ceramic tiles for an art project. Any suggestions?
Aug 21, 2008 by Shorty | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I want to cover a cheap flower vase with pieces of broken tiles in various colors and then grout between the pieces. What do tile stores do with damaged tiles?
I've done numerous mosaics. Most of the tiles I got were on sample boards- from a flooring store (that was closing). Also you can use broken dishes. Most paint/decorating stores have sample tiles on boards- ask if they have any discontinued samples they want to dispose of, timing is everything.. good luck & enjoy your project!

Can I handpaint and refire a ceramic tile.Tiles will be used outdoors so ceramic or porcelain?
Feb 21, 2008 by inquisitive tobaccoman | Posted in Sculpture
My daughter desires to tile a cement block wall that is outside for her senior Girl Scout gold project. Cost is a concern as daddy bears this cost but does she need to use porcelain or will ceramic do? Then, does she need glazed finish or matte finish tiles to paint? The art teacher at her high school has offered to help refire the tiles and he can fire to a Cone 6. Thirdly, what kind of paint and glaze should she use?
Forget about porcellain, cheap white ceramic tiles will do, and choose low fire glazes as it's more likely that they will work. Look if there is a ceramics supplies store (yellow pages) in town or a pottery studio. Most of the places which sell glazes are very knowledgable about their product and can guide you which ones to use.
Your daughter will have to run tests first to check everything works. But if she is a senior girl scout she should be old enough to be able to do her own research on the project.
Read through link for good discussion of the subject.
