What is a good way to cap of a 90 degree corner of ceramic tile with no bullnose to work with?
Aug 02, 2007 by ben n | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
You have a few options...you can just butt the ends leaving a "v" shape and then grout, (or better yet use a matching acrylic caulk, you can usually buy this to match your grout from your grout manufacturer) but this often can create some maintenance issues later. If you are ok with a "metal look" schluter makes a couple different edge profiles that will do the trick, these should be available at your local flooring retailer that specializes in tile. Rondec is our favorite and you can find out more about it here... http://www.schluter.com/2_1_rondec.aspx
If you do not like the metal idea. another trick is to use a hand grinder with a diamond blade and round over the edge then get a premium quality ceramic paint that closely matches your tile and color the edge to match. (many manufacturers resort to this even to create "bullnose" tiles.) One of these options should fix you right up!! Good Luck!

simplest way if the look isnt too important is to put grout at the edge of the tile. I used a decorative tile piece about 2x 6 inches and set it around the tile edge

Can I cover a basement floor of linoleum tiles with broken corners, with ceramic tile or a wood-look product?
Apr 22, 2008 by Susie Homemaker | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
Are the linoleum tiles likely to have asbestos in them if they were laid down in 1966? Would I be able to take them up, if they have asbestos ingredients? I like ceramic tile because the basement is damp in the summer, but I have seen some nice light wood colored plastic product. i just want it to be easy, as it is just a basement. Thank yo for any advise.
I tile every day of my life, and pretty much know that an acceptable standard for anything containing asbestos is COVERING/Painting etc. as opposed to a DIY removal and remediation.
In your case, given that it's a basement, I'd stay away from hardwoods or laminates, and go with tile, BUT...
NOT directily on Lino. No offense to any who say it's OK,,, Lino is like Vinyl stock, not at all porous, not at all designed for thinset.
I'd sacrifice 1/2 inch in height initially to lay Concrete backer board. Not only will this aid in covering the Lino, but also a better substrate for tile. Certainly for budget concerns you may not have unlimited resources, but in an end result for anything long term you should consider investing. You can SEAL over the lino first if you feel some sense of more comfort and security. Add a vapor barrier, and assume that you should use exterior mortar and grout.
Obviously too, the concrete backer board will be installed into concrete, so you'll have to allow the proper method.
Once the substrate is secure, then the tile can proceed, and still in total, you lose less than 1.5 inches floor to ceiling, in height.

Can I fix a ceramic tile before grouting?
May 12, 2006 by Brad B | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
One of my 20" ceramic tiles has one corner sticking up higher than others 1/8" & it moves when walked on. I just laid the tile last night. I did put down hardi-backer board first but I still had a high point right under this tile. I don't mind it being slightly high but will the grout keep it from moving?
if it moves already, it's screwed
lift it out, clean as much as possible
reinstall
check that all tiles are solid, than grout

Ceramic tile, how to cut 90 degree corners and faucet?
Jan 13, 2007 by Cramer A | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I'm installing ceramic tile. How do you make the double corner cuts? Or the cuts around faucet fittings? I have a tile cutter the scores and then breaks the tile, but I need to know how to cut a hole in the tile to fit around the bathtub faucet etc. Also outside corners that have a 90 degree angle. Thanks.
90 degree are easy use a straight edge and follow the straight edge of the tile and mark of what need to be cut.
as for the fixture knock out you will need to get a special fawners drilling bit you can get them in just about any size and out this to drill / cut out the openings for the fixtures.
