What is the best mothod for cutting ceramic tile (for fine art use)?
Mar 12, 2009 by Caroline B | Posted in Other - Visual Arts
I am creating a mosaic and need ceramic tiles that are approx. 1/4" x 1/4" to 1" x 1". Doing this on the cheap, so power tools are out of the question. I love the idea of using abstract shapes from broken tiles and tips for that process are welcome as well. Any ideas? Thank you for your contributions!
Get a tile knife, score them along the back and then break them along a straight edge or over a small tube like a ball point pen. A little sand paper will clean up any rough edges.

I agree with David. And make sure you wear protective gloves.

If you wang regular rectangle tiles, I suggest you order some tiles form your local dealer, it should be few dollors per pound. very cheap resources.
If you dont need regular tiles, just use a hammer to knock them down. of course you need wear some protections for both your hand and eyes.
by the way, if you need a software tool for your pattern design, you may get a Easy Mosaic from http://www.ezmosaic.com

How can I cut ceramic tile if I dont have a cutting tool or wet saw?

You can buy a score and snap tile cutter pretty cheaply at places like Home Depot. For more intricate cuts, and if you don't want to buy the score and snap tool, you can rent wet saws and tile cutters by the day and 1/2 day at any tool rental store. If you go this route, I'd suggest setting all the tile first, saving the pieces to be cut for last, that way you don't waste money on the rental.

what is the best way to make a circular cut in ceramic tile?
Jun 06, 2008 by keybums | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
i need to make a 4 inch round hole to fit a toilet. I purchased a "ceramic tile cutting" kit from Lowes, but it was a joke. Couldn't make a dent in the tile without completely wearing down. I have a wet saw but this is not practical for a round cut.
No offense, but I tile EVERY day of my life and your issue is unnecessary.
I've also remodeled a bunch of bathrooms, and yes I always pull the toilet for flooring, but never snug around the vent with tile. It serves no valid purpose to do so. IF the tile (as it should be) is installed, and within the perimeter of the toilet base, that's all you need to do. Obviously it may not be full sheets under, but the idea is to give the illusion that they extend fully.
Certainly there are Diamond bit tools and stated resolutions will be expressed here, but for my time, and trouble, I've never had an issue or a negative call back.
Your only issue should be NOT resetting the toilet too soon, and use a Wax ring with a rubber flange extension, embedded.

How do you use a wet saw for cutting ceramic tile?
Jan 17, 2007 by slimy_kitty666 | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
instructions, cutting, safety
All you have to do is line up where you want the tile cut to the cutting wheel. It's very easy, and you'll catch onto it in no time at all. Make sure you wear safety glasses of some sort because the shards of ceramic debris fly everywhere.
