How do you get WaTeR spots off CeRaMiC TILE shower walls?
Dec 04, 2006 by NoTlazidazi | Posted in Cleaning & Laundry
I guess I've learned the hard way: we've got hard water; and NeVeR forget to wipe the ceramic tile walls after showering!
I didn't know it was needed, and didn't wipe the tile after showers for several months after tiling in a new bath. The tiles are dulled/covered by waterspots. I've tried everything I know to remove the water spots: brillo, comet, tilex, Mr. eraser, a good-for-nothing steam cleaner thing, elbow grease, and MoRe elbow grease. Geez ~ It's just water! [I know, calcium...] But, What's the deal? Why is it so hard to remove?
I now know what NoT to do and will never leave a shower without first wiping it dry. But for damage already done, what can I do to get the tiles back to shiny new, with no water marks?
Use vinegar full strengh. do not use salt you will scratch your tiles and the shine finish will be full of scuffs and marked up.
Use a spray bottle and fill it with pure vinegar. spray directly to tiles it is best if you could find a way to hang a cloth there so the vinegar can stay in that spot for a few hours rather than spraying frequently. soaking it is better. The vinegar will not hurt your tiles and let it stand for at least 3-4 hours it may take more than 1 time depending how bad it is. Soak it as long as you can it will not hurt but the only way to remove hard water marks. Good Luck.

Why not try spritzing with vinegar after a shower? After all, we use Tums to neutralize acid, so why not a benign (and let's face it, CHEAP) solution like white vinegar to remove scale? I often flush my coffee maker with white vinegar to loosen scale on the heater elements.

Lime away. the chemical descale.in any hardware or supermarket store. The next ... which works very well is a buffer and red jewelers rouge. Buff the baby out then apply a coat of Johnson paste floor wax .... and Voila you have a shiny shower.
Good luck

Limescale remover. Like Viakal or any store own brand. Just use it now and then and you don't need to wipe the water off after you shower!

CLR .....
It comes in a gray plastic bottle (Walgreen's, Kroger, Wal-mart)
then when it is dry, wipe it down w/ a towel that has baby oil on it. Wipe it down then with a dry towel. Do this twice a week, and that's all you will have to do.
We used to do that to keep the showers looking clean when I was in the Air Force. Works quite well.

my mother in law is a house cleaner and she uses lemon oil to remove water spots off anything. It works super good on glass shower doors,so give it a try on tile, its better than all the harsh cleaners.

Vinegar water or tub and tile cleaner. Pick up one of those scribing bubbles automatic cleaners, they work quite well.

I have a shower with white old tiles, brick walls. Can I install ceramic tile ontop of the old white tiles?
Feb 02, 2007 by dualpatty | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
My shower walls are around a combination shower tub. My walls are brick. Can I just paste on ceramic glass tile on top of the white ceramic tile shower walls?
That does not sound like a good idea.
Normally one has a base as plywood (brick in your case). Next black paper is affixed, the a substrate as wonder board on which you place the thin-set and then the tiles.
What would likely happen is if you apply thin-set to the old tiles they will not adhere. You would then be in worse shape and have even more work.
In my opinion it is better to do the job correctly and remove the old tiles.
Before you undertake such a job, be sure you understand it because you'll need tools e.g. a tile cutter, etc.
It is great fun to do tile work, but it requires patience and knowledge.
Good luck.

how do you install a single faucet shower in a ceramic tile shower which has double faucet handles?
Apr 04, 2006 by help please | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
we have a ceramic tile tub enclosur, our house built in the 70's and wish to change from two handle faucet to single. utility room on backside of shower. do we need to go through there and how do we replace holes left by two faucet?
There are a couple of ways to approach this. First, you can open an access panel behind the shower valve, remove the old valve, replace it with a new single handle valve and use an "upgrade plate" or conversion plate (try www.symmons.com, the part # is CC). option 2 is to NOT open the wall, but to get the same conversion plate, but put it over the existing valve, trace around the plate, then cut out 3/4" of an inch inside the line, remove that tile & wallboard, then replace the old valve with the new one, and install the plate to cover up the whole thing. The worst part will be cutting the tile and soldering in a very small area.
Good luck!

What is the best way to remove build up soap scum on ceramic tile shower walls and on glass shower doors?

One bathroom has brown ceramic tile walls and the other is a gold color.
Magic Eraser! By Mr. Clean or a generic. It will take it off easily. I love those things.

How to patch a ceramic tile shower floor. The grout came loose and a few of the one inch tiles seem soft and?
Apr 08, 2007 by Pink | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
one actually caved in. I have some experience with tiling regular floors but there seems to be no substrate on which to lay the tile. I am trying to understand how a tile shower is done.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. I just need to get the shower patched, aesthetics aside, so it is usable, unable to use now without the water going under and into the shower pan and worsening the problem.
I'd say you have the first signs of a serious problem.
Keep in mind that the tile/grout is not a water proof layer. Water does soak into the concrete below the tile in a properly constructed shower floor. It is supposed to be caught by the liner and carried by the liner to the drain [there are weep holes at the drain to catch the water in the concrete] If you have leakage beyond that [water stains on the wood, mold, rotting wood or dripping water] you really should fix the problem soon.
If there is no leaks below, a "temporary" quick fix would be to dig out any loose material, let the area dry out completely and fill the missing concrete with a sandy mortor mix [add "play sand" to a standard morar mix bag, one measure sand to two or three measures of mortar mix] Add very little water and mix to a very dry consistency. You should be able to make a ball in your hand without it sticking to your hand. http://www.johnbridge.com/deckmud.htm.
Once this concrete has cured for at least 24 hours, you could reset the loose tile(s) with thinset mortar. DO NOT use mastic or premixed thinset.
You should really consider fixing it right, here are links to how to's:
