Installing custom cabinets, ceramic tile, and high end appliances. Is a rolling small island cheesy?
Mar 08, 2007 by mel s | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I have a small L shaped wall 17"deep by 3' wide. I don't want to waste any space, so I have had several ideas, a wall of cabinets seems to "busy", and if I just install a working countertop with cone lights overhead you would be working looking at a wall. I thought about asking the cabinet maker to put good locking wheels and 3 cabinets underneath, and then we could roll it into the center of the kitchen for serving or working and then lock it back against the wall when not in use. As I am typing I am also considering the wear and tear on the wall....... I have never heard of this done. any ideas?
I wouldn't suggest a rolling island. Cheesy doesn't begin to describe it. Why not do a counter top in the L-shaped area with a decorative tile back splash & recessed lighting in the ceiling. It would give you extra prep room and create a little decorative nook to add to the room. Maybe a small built in bookshelf to house cookbooks or a pretty wine rack above the or to the side of the work area.

i'm looking for someone who could make a custom mosaic tile piece for my home?
Aug 25, 2007 by erickac | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
My husband is into superheroes and would like a mosaic tile of Superman's "S" emblem on the floor leading into his superhero room. I only seem to find people who do your basic ceramic tile. I think this might require an artisan of another sort. Any suggestions?
If you have a university close to you try the art department if you don't have one a good floor tile person should be able to make it as a last resort (only because of the cost) try the link below they do very very nice work.
Good luck

Can I tile over a one piece ceramic countertop?
Dec 20, 2006 by smigdiggler | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
My wife and I want to redo our bathroom countertop the current countertop is a one piece countertop that includes the sink and 5" backsplash. This is a condo unit that some manufacture custom built 200 of these to go in every unit. Anyway, we are going to drop bowl out of the countertop with a grinder and then we planned on putting mastic or thinset directly on the one piece ceramic counterop and then grouting the tile. Does anyone have any input on whether the mastic will stick to the ceramic??
Thanks,
DO NOT USE MASTIC!!! Youshould use a oly modified thin-set. Mastic is not ment for wet area's. The thinset will work as long as there is no bond inhibiting elements (wax, cleaning resadue, ect) on the surface. The polomers added to such thin set will allow the exspansion and contrasting effect that the humidity will do in the bathroom. TAhe substrait you are using is OK @ best...but still passes for TCA (Tile Council of America) recomendations.(TCA sets industry standards for the Tile industry)

Upgrades to new home construction: hardwood floors/bathroom tile/countertops? Cost? Best Durability?
Apr 06, 2008 by Would | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
Well, I am building a new home. The builder offers custom ceramic tile in bathroom, kitchen, laundry room and foyers with the starting price. I'm going smaller on square footage, but I want to go higher with interior quality. For those of you who have experience building a new home, what type of upgrade in $ per square foot am I looking at for upgrading to Travertine tiling in the bathroom, kitchen? Also, is Limestone a more attractive option?
I also want to fore go all carpet. I will go with hardwood flooring instead... I've read Oak is the best and most durable? True? What kind of costs can I expect upgrading from carpet to Oak hardwood in bedroom and living room? I know the builder can probably help with this some, but we know the end total price often goes up once it's all said and done.
Also, what's the best counter top material? Most durable? Upgrade cost? :-) Lots of questions I know, but I am looking for some general direction.
Travertine and limestone are natural products requiring more maintenance so check into that ( and generallly 2/3 times the price) There are many great looking glazed tiles that are as low as 1 $ a s/f , but don t always go the cheapest...Oak flooring is very durable and most available so cost is lower..Go to a 3 or 4 in plank in oak and you ll get a good floor but also help keep price down. If really interested in the hardness of the wood ask for the Janka (hardness) rating. A good store will know or have access to it GL
