how to make your own decorative tiles?

Jul 14, 2008 by Sam | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

my husband is wanting to build a bar. He thought it would me neat if we could find ceramic tiles that had beer labels on them. We haven't found any already done yet.

I was wondering what it would take to make our own? We are not artists, so not capable of painting on the tiles.

Thanks!!

I like Smurf's idea to use coasters, but instead of shellacking them, you could coat them with a heavy resin, which would make them like a tile and then you could set that. Here's an example of what I'm talking about to use for resin: http://liquidglasscoating.com/?gclid=CODp4IDWv5QCFQZZHgod83jHTQ

maybe you could collect alot of beer coasters from bars and shellack them until they are rock hard and then apply them to the wall

Ceramic tile - using a Dremel tool for making a small hole?

Nov 19, 2007 by dbbanjo | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

I have a few small (4" square), decorative tiles which I would like to have a small hole drilled into (for hanging/mounting). Would a Dremel tool work for this purpose? If so, any tips/suggestions on the type of bit to use for this?

Thanks!

My dremmel came with a ceramic tile bit and a masonary bit in the kit. I've used them both to drill holes in ceramic tile that I have painted on and made hanging trivets with. A couple of hints. First make a strip of masking tape with a mark on it where you want the hole on the front and another piece of tape on the back where the drill will come through. I've had the drill slide and scratch the tile while trying to make the hole. Second, wear safety glasses because there will be flying ceramic dust which is nasty when it gets in your eyes. Third, be careful how much pressure you use, let the drill do the work. It is tedious and takes quite a while to get through the tile and go straight down. Somehow I've managed to get some of my holes that are at somewhat of an angle. Finally, make certain that your hole isn't too close to the edge of the tile. I've broken the tile by making the hole too close to the edge and I've had tiles crack because the weight of the tile hanging off of the hole was more than what could be supported.

Where can I find inexpensive ceramic tile?

Mar 04, 2008 by Matthew W | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling

I am tiling my bathroom around the tub area. I have the square pieces in place, I am looking at buying some decorative trim pieces, but they all seem high priced. Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks.

The prices are going to vary based on color, quality, special things about it (like little metal flakes that make it sparkle). So if you're looking to keep the price down, you're going to need to look for simple colors, nothing fancy. I would recommend checking out Lowe's or Home Depot. Outlet stores are good for cheap cheap materials. But what you'll most often find is that the quantities aren't enough for what you need, or the quality is very inconsistant.
There are reasons why things end up in outlet stores.. Alot of times its because of a flaw that doesn't make it NOT sellable, but it makes it not good enough to sell in a larger retailer that only wants good stuff.

I would shoot over to the nearest big chain hardware store and check out things there. You may even have a True Value, or Value Home Center near you as well. They're also great places to get good prices on tile.

Do arched tiles exist?

Feb 10, 2008 by m_rayj | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling

I am looking for a plain white glossy ceramic trim tile that I can use to make a decorative arch on a bathroom wall that I am remodeling. Do rounded or arched tiles exist? Has anyone seen them online? I really am not looking to use mosaic tiles. I would really appreciate any suggestions.

look up inside corner tiles for kitchens and bathrooms. or, you can use trim tiles (longer than they are wide) and place them long side by long side on on a bent plywood form that defines the arch. many places that specialize in plywood sell sheet that are bendable in one direction. the sheets are about 1/8 to 3/16ths thick.

You like any tips with installing linoleum, vinyl tile, ceramic tile?

Oct 30, 2006 by Richard15 | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

I installed decorative flooring for 25 years. I was very good at it also. I would like share what I learnt over the years. Richard

Okay, supposing you live in a sub-zero weather area and you just brought a roll of linoleum home to install.
Should you use felt paper glued down first as a base?
Can you start right in to paste it down to the floor as soon as you arrive home?
