Anyone know of good resources for ceramic tile painting?
Oct 07, 2007 by darkangelar03 | Posted in Painting
I'm planning to redecorate my kitchen soon, and as part of the redecoration I want to put ceramic tile on the walls as a back splash. In thinking over the decor of the room, I thought it would be really neat to have a Mediterranean design on the tiles. Obviously, purchasing a room's worth of Mediterranean ceramic tiles could be pricey, and I'm considering whether or not I should do the painting myself. The only problem is that I don't know anything about painting ceramic tiles. I was hoping that someone could point me toward some really good websites or books that would be helpful in getting started.
Go to smart flix.com as they have hundreds of how to DVDs you can rent for $10 including postage both ways and no membership fee is required.
Also, check out my friend Dave Bosley at Artworkontile.com as his prices are not that bad and he has great art fired on tile and can do your art also if you want him to.
There are ceramic shops in some cities that let you decorate green ware and they fire it, but I think by the time you paid them Dave would be a better deal.

Has anyone been successful at painting ceramic tile in a bathroom?
Oct 29, 2007 by Corrine G | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
We have a bathroom that is really out dated. It has yellow ceramic tile in it. It covers a large area and would be expensive to replace. I was wondering if anyone has tried painting it. They tell me they make a primer for just that and you really can paint it. I wonder how it will wear in the shower. Let me know
Try going to home depot and looking at water resistant paints.

What paint should I use to paint ceramic tile?
Mar 24, 2008 by tommy lampini | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I have a kitchen with ceramic tile that is a sick grey color. I've remodeled the kitchen and the grey ceramic tile floor just doesn't go well. I'd like to paint it but have no idea what paint to use or if it is practical to even paint it. Is it possible or do I just need to live with it?
Getting good adhesion to ceramic tile with paint is VERY difficult. Generally it will come out looking bad. My best recommendation would be to make due with it.
If you absolutely must paint it, your best bet would be to use this product: http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGResourceCenter.asp?sn=pro&pid=7
It is specially designed for tub and tile. I believe you can get it in a tint base and get it tinted to whatever color you please.

Can you successfully paint ceramic tile?
Feb 04, 2008 by apothegm1066 | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I have this ceramic tile in my bathroom (on the wall, not the floor). There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, except it is an incredibly ugly color. I would like to paint it, rather than rip it all down just to put up more tile.
Any suggestions?
Can you successfully paint ceramic tile with a conventional latex paint? No. It is too hard and too slick.
Is the tile subject to direct contact with water? Is the bathroom vented well or is there a lot of humidity during showers? Where there is moisture or high humidity you will especially need to do it right or it will not last, it will blister and eventually those blisters will break and flake off.
I would have it done professionally if I were you. Do a search for a competent bathtub re-finisher. The same process should work for the the ceramic tile. If memory serves me correctly it will involve cleaning, acid etching, re-cleaning, priming with a two part epoxy, and finishing with a two part urethane - or something similar to this procedure. Although not a one step process, it still should be cheaper than tearing out the old tile and re-installing new. Be sure the re-finisher offers a warranty on his work - I have seen professionally refinished tubs blister and peel particularly where water collects or where soaps and shampoos are left on the surface for extended lengths of time.
One note about the two part expoxies and urethanes - they stink very badly. You will want to be able to open windows and ventilate the house well if they are used.

why would anyone want to paint ceramic tile, i can see decorating some for a change but the whole wall?
Dec 14, 2006 by john t | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
i know there are products to paint tile, wuote decorate, but the whole wall, i am confused, they are clean, and easy to clean. even in the tub area when the grout gets dirty, u clean and reseal.
why change it unless u take it down and redo?
SO WHAT I SEE IS IT IS CHEAP OR IT COVERS UP UGLY COLOR TILE. BUT IS IT PRACTICAL TO DO WITHOUT FUTURE PROBLEMS?
They probably have something like the teal or hot pink or some color they really want to be rid of.
Plus replacing it all might be more than a budget allows just now.
