Composite Decking?
May 06, 2007 by wormee38 | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
Has anybody used this composite decking that is made from polyethylene and recycled fiber, which is suppose to not crack or splinter and begins to fade to a natural color in 30-60 days?Would like to know if it is worth the money or not. Would like to know what the pros and cons are of this product. Thank You!
Several are now available but Trex is one of the better known brands. I have used Trex on a few decks and like it but it is expensive to buy. The plus is you have zero maintenance after it's installed. Good luck with your project

TREX I believe you are talking about and if that is the case I bid on a deck recently and the home owner decided to stay with redwood. The only difference I believe is the price redwood has not let people down in years the Trex is a new thing for someone to make a lot of money off of.

This is a fairly new product so I havent heard to many cons about it.The only one would be its expensive. The pros are it looks great and will never need replacing. It never rots or warps.I think its a great product.

Which composite decking is best to use?
Jun 03, 2008 by jefferykos | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I am rebuilding front steps on my porch and am leaning toward composite decking. the builder wants to use Weatherbest. Does anyone have pos/neg things to say about this brand versus Trex or are they all essentially the same?
Go to hgtv.com, they have great ideas and good advice, just plug in composite decking in the search box.

What is the best way to install composite decking?
Jul 18, 2008 by gidge980 | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I am installing VERANDA composite decking and bought the recommended composite screws. I am finding it extremely difficult to install these screws, even when drilling pilot holes (which I really don't want to do for every hole - this is a large deck). The product info says there is no pre-drilling required, but I'm not finding that to be true. Does anyone have any tips for me to make this a little easier and less time consuming? I'm using a Black and Decker drill/screwdriver.
There are many ways to install this type of decking today. But rather than pre-drilling I am going to list several ways that are gaining popularity. But you need to check with your building inspector as just because these ways have been proven to be a success, they must still be written into local building code and passed into law. That is something done about every 5 years.
First buy a good Screw/Decking gun if your deck it that big. It will be worth the money. Even for the home novice I use this one myself
DeWalt Heavy-Duty 18V Cordless Drywall/Deck Screwdriver Kit

You can even rent one.
#1
Buy self drilling stainless steel screws. These have a drill bit forged on the tip of every screw. You will need to go to a real lumber yard for these as home centers (Home Depot, Lowes) are behind in technology.
The next 2 ways are gaining popularity because there are no screw holes on the top of the boards
#2
Buy or rent a a slot cutter and cut a slot in the side of the deck board. Now use a plastic wafer to push into the slot s of 2 adjacent boards and a special screw goes through a hole in the wafer.
#3
Rent a pneumatic finished nail gun. Buy some stailless steel finishing nails for this gun. And buy caulking tubes of 3M Marine 5200 Sealant. (No other sealant is approved for this usage)
Put a bead of sealant down, put the deck board in place and shoot 2 finish nails into it to hold it in place until the sealant completly cures. (2 to 3 weeks)
What you get will be no screws on the top of your deck showing and a deck that of the all the methods is the strongest. The only down side is that once the sealant cured this deck can not be taken apart with out destroying it.

What is the price per square foot of composite decking?
Aug 27, 2008 by Jane Doe | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
How does it compare to the price per square foot of treated lumber decking? Is the composite decking worth the cost difference? Thank You!
Your best bet is to call your local lumber distributer, i.e. Lowe's, Home Depot, 84 Lumber, etc. and ask them their prices. You can tell them the dimensions of the deck you're wanting to build and they'll tell you the total cost of materials to build it. Ask them the pros and cons of both products. I worked at Lowe's from 2005-2006. In my opinion, the composite decking will last a lot longer than the pressure treated lumber. The composite is a little more expensive since it holds up longer, but I would recommend it. And you won't have to worry about splinters!

Lake House Spring Maintenance
Some of you who are interested in a lake whore-house for a vacation home or for retirement might be wondering what it’s like to take up the cudgels for a home on a lake. As nice as it is to live on the water, there are living and upkeep issues that must be considered. I have been looking at some of these the past two weekends so I considering I would share them with readers.
Lake House Exterior Prolongation
This is the category that concerns all homeowners. Our lake home is as soon as on the water and in a rural area. This seems to add to the maintenance issues.
Painting. Our bordello and garage are sheathed in wood panel siding. Last leap we painted the house, using labor supplied by our college swotter son and his friends. We had to power wash the siding first because with all of the lake humidity and murk, mold can grow on the old paint. This spring we will paint the garage.
The next era the house needs paint, we intend to replace the wood siding with fiber weld siding. Hardie Board is probably the most well known make. Fiber cement siding lasts much longer, holds booze it up longer, is fire and termite resistant, and is less susceptible to storm mar. Since we want to own our lake home through retirement, low maintenance is weighty.
Trees. Our lot is dominated by large trees, all the way down to the water. We have no squeal, which is good. We do get large limbs falling occasionally. Our neighbor has destroyed several large trees from storms. We had a severe ice storm 6 weeks ago which dropped a lot of limbs across our deck and pier stairs. I cleared them with a chainsaw and lots of lifting. This summer I will try to cut the considerable pieces into smaller pieces and use that for firewood next winter.
Landscaping. I have very baby yard maintenance every year. Basically all I need to do is frill some shrubs now and then and use a string trimmer on the ground cover when it gets too nearby to the house. ...
