I am putting down composite decking using screws with joists 12" on center. Can I use screws every 24"?
Jul 19, 2008 by Bruce D | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I am replacing a wood surface that was 2X6 pressure treated with 24" centers for the joists. I have put in joists that are now 12' on center. The joists handle the sheer or vertical load. What will putting screws every 12" accomplish from a structural stand point? I am not trying to save screws but the deck is about 800 sq. ft. so the extra work is not trivial.
With composite decking there isn't a problem with warping. However it is recommended that (depending on thickness) it be supported every 16 inches. I would try screwing it on 24 inch centers with 2 screws and maybe 1 screw in the center of the odd joist.

I'm looking at using a composite decking and I couldn't find anything about this. I would assume that you screw at every joist. If your joists are at 12" then I would screw each one. I wouldn't go 24" as you could have warping.

It'd be sturdier to go every joist, if cost was an issue i would have gone joists every 18" centers you'd have saved on joists as well as screws.

Why scrimp on screws? Build a proper deck, placing a screw at every joist. Counter sink them too, for a nicer finished product.

Are screws supposed to show through on decking?
May 19, 2008 by Kristy | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
We took the old boards off and we are replacing them with new boards. we are going to secure them to the crossboards underneath, but I am wondering if the screws are supposed to show since we are going to be staining it. I have never done this before so do they have special screws for that or will they be unnoticable after the deck is stained or what? Ty for any info!
unless u counter sink the screws ( going below the surface of the wood ) then the screw heads or nails are going to show...they do sell a fastening system that u can screw the deck down from underneath.... I would just use a 3 inch finishing nail ( has no head so less shows )

composate deck screws are now being made need to know what is best for this project.
If you are surface screwing them then use a screw called "Trap Ease" they have a duel thread on them and will not let the composite decking mushroom out on you....be sure to predrill all you holes at the ends of the board......

If repairing an outside swinging door for my deck, should I use wood screws or deck screws?
Jul 02, 2007 by Justin | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I need to re-attach three hinges on a door off the back deck of a home I bought. It is a pretty solid door with a "Z bracing." Which screws would provide the most strength for attaching the metal hinge to the wood?
Galvanized wood screws will work.

A stepped down area at the end of my jetty (which is subject to tidal soaking) need to have boards replaced because they have become very spongy. I want to repair the area but am unsure what materials to use.
