We are building a house and need advice for the 2nd floor covered porch decking.?

We needs some ideas of what to use for the decking on a second floor porch. We need something that won't leak. Any ideas?
It depends on your location if it freezes. You need to take appropriate water proofing measures. a standard Joist and plywood floor are a good start. you need to have appropriate flashings at corners and edges. (I am assuming you have live able space under the deck.) then you can do a tile mud bed or use dura rock to get slope so the water will run off correctly. Next install a water proofing membrane. Latticrete makes a good roll on product. Use several coats and the backing fabric specified by the manufacturer (Latticrete) on the last coat while it is wet sprinkle it with sand. This gives the tile mastic something to adhere too. install tile and grout as usual.

laying down timber decking, then masonite and then some tiles, or lino will seal the floor against leaking.

Lay a plywood (particle board) deck then cover that with 30# felt capped with 90# roofing sheet. It the least expensive way but watch for wear in the high traffic areas.

can I cover a second floor porch with t/g decking over an existing living space with out leaking?..how to do i?
Oct 15, 2008 by Joe P | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I have a rental unit that needs a second floor porch redone. The previous owner covered the original metal roof, now long since past repair with rubber roofing, which isn't doing the job, since this area does get foot traffic. Can I cover this area with t/g porch decking adequately to ensure no leakage downstairs, and if so, how to prepare it correctly?
This Old House had an episode a few years ago where they did exactly what you propose - lay a deck over a rubber membrane on plywood substrate. As I recall, they laid "joists" of p/t furring strips faced with rubber on the bottom so as not to chafe the membrane, then they laid the decking - they used standard deck boards spaced about 1/8" apart. As I recall, the railing posts were the biggest problem to attach and weather-proof, and I don't recall the exact details. I remember them gluing strips of membrane around the 4x4 posts like a flashing and painting with rubber mastic to seal it. You might be able to search that on line.

how much a square foot is trex decking?
Nov 07, 2007 by Tommy C | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
im trying to find out how much to charge for a 90 square foot floor deck 5 quarter by 6. im going to need to know how much the deck material is inorder to know what to charge for the job. Iam just going over the existing flooring after i resecure it and then lay my decking right over the old one ;was thinking 10 per square foot labor and material i think the decking goes for like 5 per square foot?
Hi Tommy,
Call Lowes or Home Depot - they sell it. They don't sell it by the square foot. They sell it by the linear foot but you can calculate it. I think you are low but they will let you know.
Take care,
PS: Considering what Doc said (I don't think Doc realized you were quoting it with materials): I think that the Trex alone will cost you close to $10 sq.ft. and since you are including materials in the price you may very well do this job for nothing if you're not careful. I'm not even going to comment on the merits of putting it over an existing deck. I will assume that is what the owner wants and leave it at that.

How do i get Male cat Spray odor out of my 4 season porch wood deck type floor?
Apr 12, 2007 by heather d | Posted in Cats
I have 3 male unnuetered cats that turned my porch into a battlefield. To make it even worse my porch roof leaks really bad. I can remove the cats, I can take out the carpet, & fix the leaks but then im stuck with a deck floor still smelling unbearable. Im almost to the point of ripping off the porch and starting over but thats alot of money down the drain
I hate to say, you need to first, set the porch on fire, then remove all burned wood. Seriously, cat pee is the hardest to remove from anything, their are products on the market that claim to eliminate the enzymes in cat urine to eliminate the smell, one product is called Urine Gone. Trust me when I tell you they don't work, I have never been able to find any product on the market that will remove this smell. You could try soaking the boards in bleach, but it it's set in to the wood, you might have a hard time.
Next tip... Neuter your male cats...it will stop them from marking their territory. If you don't then they will never stop spraying your patio, or home.
