Where can I find a guide to design a composite concrete-steel deck?
Mar 31, 2009 by daniel l | Posted in Engineering
I need to design a composite concrete-steel deck for a two story parking building, but the only info I find does not tell how to calculate the negative moment reiforcement, nor aditional positive moment reinforcement.
You can try the steel solutions center at aisc.org or concrete.org for guides, but normally the steel deck (if you're talking about corrugated metal deck) is neglected and not used as reinforcement because the deck will eventually corrode and as an engineer, you can't depend on it being properly maintained. There is a heightened likelihood of corrosion if they're in a climate where they're going to use salt on the roads, cars drip that when they're parked and it finds the way down to the metal deck. Welded wire reinforcement (until recently called welded wire mesh) is typically used for both negative and positive moment reinforcement or rebar, and a lot of them use precast double T sections (as slabs).
If you're asking about steel framed parking garages and not the slab design, AISC.org has a design guide for that and Modern steel construction produces one of their months focuses on it, yearly.
As far as the slab reinforcement, the steel deck folks - Vulcraft and NJBouras can help with that if you can find their steel deck catalogs.
Vulcraft.com.
I don't remember NJBouras' web site offhand, new columbia joist, et. al.
