How come I can't hold my breath as long when I stick my face directly under a high powered blow dryer/fan?
Sep 05, 2006 by daybuydaysheit | Posted in Other - Health
I can easily hold my breath for well over 45 seconds under normal conditions, but when I stick my face directly into stiff blowing restroom handdryer or a high powered hair dryer, or some other type of powerful fan, I can only hold my breath for 15-20 seconds?
Why is this?
How can I hold my breath for longer lengths of time when I stick my face in the blowdryer?
Has to do with perceptions of air. When you hold your breath normally, air is trapped in your nasal passages, dormant, and doing nothing.
When you blow the air at your face, the air pressure changes in the nasal passages, causing you to feel as if the air is being sucked from your lungs.

It's a psychological thing. You're physically just as able to hold your breath, but your mind isn't letting you.

what is the fan called in a dryer that blows the air out?
Feb 11, 2007 by Kim H | Posted in Cleaning & Laundry
i have a dryer at home that is not blowing any air out and is taking forever to dry things, and is kind of a waste of electricity. so i took the hose off the back and there is no air coming out of the dryer, so i tried taking it apart and cleaned it out and there was no clogs anywhere. since it says on the dryer not to operate with the panels off, i decided not to see if the fan works or not. plus something seems to be making a noise which sound like its coming from the area of the fan, so i figure it is the only thing i could think of that could be going wrong. if you have any advice of anything else this may be please tell me. P.S. there is nothing wrong with the heating element.
It sounds like the blower wheel is worn out where it goes onto the motor shaft. It is a fairly simple job to change it and if you had the unit apart to clean you probably know what you must do.
It is a common problem and the part is not expensive.

Can I heat tile grout (with a hair-dryer or fan-heater) to speed up the drying process?
Dec 13, 2006 by disco_stoo_1 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I'm re-tiling a shower but it is frequently used by others and I can't leave it for 3-4 days as recommended on the grout instructions. I tested this on 1 panel and it seemed to work, but some people have said this isn't a good idea and should dry naturally? Anyone have experience of this? Thanks
It will dry to quick and crack.

Energy Cost for a Floor Dryer Fan?
Mar 28, 2009 by ScaredToDrive | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I'm using 3 floor dryer fans and a dehumidifier to dry up a mess made by a leak from my upstairs neighbor. How much energy do these things use? I see the dryers say 3 amps. If I'm running these things 24 hours a day...for a week...any idea how much energy that is? I need to know whether I need to claim this. Thanks.
Depending on what you're paying per kw/h, the cost can vary. The combined load of all of the dryer fans is .36 kw/h. Using the national average of $0.11 per kw/h, the total for a week would be $6.65. 1 dehumidifier with a draw of 3.4 amps (408 watts at 120 volts) would cost around $7.54 to operate for an entire week.

Help with dryer fan belt?
Sep 04, 2008 by Only A Ghost | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I'm working on fixing my clothes dryer's fanbelt (it finally gave out). I've installed the new one, but the tumbler doesn't want to turn even when the machine is on. I can turn it myself, but it's still broken. What am I doing wrong? Is there anything special i should do too? Thanks, people.
Jeez it's a maytag and the model nuber is LDE7304ACL. help now please?
Tumbler will turn when i pull o the fanbelt manually.
You've obviously routed the new belt incorrectly. It needs to be thru the idler pulley and around the end pulley on the motor shaft. If you would have even thought to mention which dryer you have, brand, type, etc, one of us might have been able to give you instructions on how to properly route the belt. Dryers are not all alike, any more than cars, or wash machines, or ovens, etc. All have their little ideosyncrasies and sometimes can drive you nuts.
