Exhaust setup Can you use an inline fan as an exhaust blower?

Can an inline fan be mounted to basically hug the wall (or as close as it can be) so that it is the *exhaust blower* without there being a "line", with out their being any ducting on the other side of it? And if so, instead of it hugging a solid wall, what would that be called that makes the fan connect to the hole in the wall. The grill? or the register? or flange? or whatever?
Yes, you could use an inline fan as a thru-the-wall fan, however if you are venting over a stove or venting flammable solvent/fumes, the fan would need to be a sealed, explosion proof unit.
Mounting flanges would need to be attached in some fashion, along with some type of protective grill that would prevent fingers/hands or other things reaching the fan. Same would be necessary for the outside & probably some type of outside cover that would close when not in use.

You can buy 'boxed' propeller fans that mount right into the wall,
already fitted with louvers and grilles.
A heating and ventilating supply house can help you.

Great fan. I have been looking for years.
I have been looking for years to find a replacement for the noisy cobbled exhaust fan the builder put in my attic to vent 3 bathrooms and the laundry room. Amazon is the last place I would consider to look for something like this. I only found it while I was looking for something else. I'd rather be lucky than smart.
This unit is quiet and easy to install. Their installation methods and hardware are very flexible. The 240 CFM size is adequate to exhaust four room outlets of 4" diameter each with major restrictors at the room outlets. I have the fan on a timer that runs 16 hours a day. The inlet of the fan unit is only a single 6" opening. You must construct your own inlet plenum for multiple inlet connections. A Y-connector or a T-connector works nicely.

Quietest kitchen fan yet
We have renovated several houses and have always installed Panasonic vent fans. They are among the quietest and most durable available (Fantech is also good). This is the first inline fan we have installed. We put it in the kitchen-- we don't need a fancy hood with fan over the stove, just a good exhaust fan to clear the occasional smoke or to cool the room. This fan moves lots of air (240 cfm), especially with the 6" duct we installed, but it is quieter than the 70 cfm ceiling fans we have put in previously.
