I'm looking for an window exhaust fan with a horizontal of less than 19.5" & vertical of less than 11.

Jun 07, 2008 by aubiero3 | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

All of the ones I was able to find were 0ver 20" horizontal. I am having no problem finding the vertical of 11". any suggestions?

maybe you'll find one on ebay.

I have a old bathroom, in which it is impossible to install an exhaust fan.Is there an Alt. besides window fan?

Sep 07, 2008 by Brandon B | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

I have a 1920s style bathroom that I am currently remodeling. I recently found out that is was going to be extremely expensive to put in an exhaust fan and because that house is so old and it might later cause some leaking problems. Is there an alternative besides the hideous window fan. is there a special type of dehumidifier or something that I can get to solve this problem?

how about a through the wall fan? If you have wall space in the bathroom you can use one of these. Or something similar

What does the exhaust fan on my window air conditioner do?

Jun 06, 2007 by cole h | Posted in Other - Electronics

I just moved into a house with a window air conditioner. I have never used one and it has a option of exhaust fan on or off. What should I have it set on?

If you close off the vent that the fan blows outside air through, then the cooled air in your room will recirculate inside the room. That will make it cool-down faster and will save on your electric bills because you are not paying to cool-down hot air from outside.

How do I keep a 6ft by 10ft bathroom with window and exhaust fan from cracking the ceiling?

May 20, 2008 by jonathan3181 | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

My bathroom initially has just a tub in it. I added a shower head with hose to it to make it a stand up instead of just a tub. After a couple of years I am starting to notice the paint pealing off due to heat and moisture. Is there any way to keep this from happening again, or do I just need to chip, plaster, and paint the ceiling.

MR (moisture resistant) drywall really has not been shown to be any more effective than standard drywall unless covered with tile, but I would never use it as backer for tile. I would use cement board.

For the situation you have, you will need to scrape the loose paint off. If necessary after scraping, apply a skimcoat of all purpose joint compound to smooth out the ceiling. Then sand, prime with a quality primer, apply 2 coats of a moisture resistant paint. This will seal the ceiling and prevent flaking. Good luck.

Is there such a product as a window-mounted exhaust fan? Excluding the large models.?

Feb 08, 2007 by CJohn317 | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling

I want to add exhaust fans to my bathrooms but really don't want to go through the ceiling and roof or the walls if I can avoid it.

They used to make them, but I don't think you will find them at the local lumber yard. Older homes had them with pull chains.
Most building codes probably would not allow them anymore.

Better, But Pricy
This fan is very similar to the Lasko 16" window fan but with a higher CFM output. I could tell just by standing in the exhaust stream outside the window. I'm just not yet convinced that the considerable difference in price is worth the additional CFM's, but I needed something quick when temps went north of 90 degrees. Note that I was very interested in the Air King model 1966 which is designed more for commercial use. The unit would have barely fit my window and the increased noise would have been an issue in my dining room [I don't have an upstairs or attic window for this purpose].

So, we established that the output is satisfying. That said, this fan as well as every other window fan that I have owned [and I've owned a few] all suffer from the same affliction: THE HOUSING. They're all plastic and all the same. And no matter how you snug it down, no matter how you secure it, sooner or later it is going to rattle. Sometimes it's subtle and sometimes it's not. It is a very annoying aspect of any window fan. Much of it is caused by the slow accumulation of debris on the blades, which causes them to become unbalanced with increased vibration. But still, the housing could be sturdier. Incidentally, the 'Storm Guard Feature' is just a way of allowing the window to be closed with the unit in place. My early 2000's window fan had that same feature, just without the fancy name.

Although the Air King 9155 has a generous output, the standard-issue plastic housing and 200% cost increase over the slightly less potent Lasko model put my product rating dead center. If you need more output that the standard 16" window fan and can spend the money, this will foot the bill. If you need a lot of air moved, look at model 9166. Window fans are a dying breed so we have to take what we can get; plastic housing and all.
Good Window Fan
This is a good window fan. I'm using it for a 3rd floor apartment and it's perfect.

As the cost reflects, this is way better then any box fan from your local Walmart or department store.

The plastic housing feels a little cheap, but it gets the job done.
fan from amazon
Decent fan for the price.
If you have enough window opening, go for the steel version.
An almost perfect window fan
We live in Michigan where for all but a week or two in the summer, even when the days are hot, nights are cool. We didn't want to start tearing out the plaster ceiling of our ca1925 house to put in a whole house fan so when our 30+ year old window fan died, we needed something that would actually move air.

This fan does move a lot of air but it's not perfect. Just almost.

Pros:
- Moves a ton of air

- Switch between intake and exhaust just by turning the dial

- Energy usage is excellent - rated 61 watts on the low speed, 90 watts on the high.

- It's light (see cons)

- Made in the USA

Cons:
- It's made of fairly flimsy plastic. When we take this out of the window, unless it's laid flat, when it's put back in the window, a clicking noise will occur for awhile. The plastic is obviously flexing when it's propped up without being supported on both sides by the window. At times, if you don't position it just right, the plastic side panels will vibrate. The knob feels really cheap and I'm always afraid it will just break off one day.

- Because of the design, you won't feel a whole lot of air flow if you stand directly in front of the fan. It kicks air out more around the perimeter. Even though turning the fan on creates a huge suction from windows in other parts of the house (when it's in exhaust mode), I get slightly let down every time I'm hot and sticky and turn it on (to intake mode) because there is no instant cool down like other fans.

- It's not silent. We can sleep with it on low but it's right at that point where the motor noise is sometimes in my dreams. On high, it's noisy if you're in the same room, but it's not the brain numbing, teeth rattling loud through the entire house our window unit A/C has.

- I wish the 6 ft power cord were just a couple of feet longer. Because the cord hangs down from the knob in the middle, the "realistic distance" is under 5ft long.

- Unlike the 9166, the motor isn't totally enclosed. We've had this for a little under a year and it's got quite a bit of dust caked on it. If I take the thing apart to clean it, I risk damaging it, but I know a heavy buildup of dust isn't doing it any favors.

Until the 20" Air King with the closed motor and metal fan blades is made with a variable speed motor (if companies could do it decades ago, they certainly should now, especially at the price the Air King goes for) I'll live happily with this one.
The best -- indeed one of the only -- whole-house window fans on the market these days!
SUMMARY: 5/5 stars - glad I bought it, would enthusiastically recommend it to friends, and would not hesitate to buy one again

-----

This Lasko model 2155A window fan - also sold as the Air King model 9155 - is a real blessing for me. I live in the deep South (Georgia) where the oppressive summer heat index (high heat + near-100%-humidity) often reaches into the 130s and above - and I don't have air conditioning. For me, a large whole-house window fan like this one makes all the difference between comfort and living hell when July and August roll around (it's July 27th as I write this, and I'm sitting right next to the window with the fan in it).

This is truly a WHOLE-HOUSE window fan, and it costs so much less to operate than an air conditioner. Compared with central A/C, I'm saving over a hundred dollars a month, which is over $600 a year EVERY YEAR. That's money better spent elsewhere! With this high-volume fan, I get my whole house cooled, without the $150+ monthly electricity usage of central A/C. This fan paid for itself in the first month.

Also, I've found that as I've gotten used to not having A/C, I enjoy the summers more and I'm not nearly as lethargic and short-tempered when I'm in a place without air conditioning, anywhere from the supermarket parking lot to a cookout. It all makes me wonder, WHY would I pay $150+ per month and end up so dependent on air conditioning that I can't be happy enjoying the great outdoors in the summer?! It's all a question of what your body gets acclimated to.

For the hottest summer nights, you can run a little window A/C unit in your bedroom, and still save a bundle because you can use this fan for the rest of the house instead of having to pay the skyrocketing electrical cost of central A/C.

PROS:
* Cost-efficient to operate - this fan moves 2470 CFM (cubic feet of air per minute) on only 90 watts - compare that with the larger 20" model (Air King model #9166) which moves 3560 CFM on 170 watts - an 89% power increase for just a 44% airflow increase...makes sense to just buy two of these 16" Lasko 2155A/Air King 9155 units instead...you get twice the airflow, not 44% more - and you get it for only ten watts more
* Moves a LOT of air - more than a 20" box fan, more than anything sold at Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace Hardware, True Value, the drugstore, or anywhere else I looked
* Fused 3-prong grounded safety plug
* Versatile installation options
* 3 speeds instead of 2 or just on/off
* Electrically reversible for intake and exhaust - a big plus, since I want to be able to exhaust hot air during the day and then reverse it to bring in cool air at night...without having to de-install it and manually flip the whole unit around like you do with some other' brands fans (AHEM!)
* Quieter compared to the old metal-bladed fans from years past, which sounded like airplane propellers
* Made in the USA by our friends and neighbors and fellow countrymen, not in some Chinese sweatshop

NEUTRALS:
* Construction feels a bit flimsy...everything is plastic, except the interior side's safety grille - BUT, this is basically irrelevant, because after it's in the window, it just sits there, and plastic does just as good a job of sitting in a window as metal. And, on the bright side, it's more lightweight than a metal fan would be, making it easier to install and to store in the attic or basement at the end of the season
* Don't expect it to be silent on the highest speed, there is some wind noise...but that's not the fault of the fan, and there's nothing anyone can do about it...moving large volumes of air at a high rate of speed DOES entail noise, no matter what, so you can't fault the fan or the manufacturer for that
* Pricey - for nearly-all-plastic construction, and only a 50% (maximum) airflow improvement over an $18 Wal-Mart box fan, I felt that the cost of $50-$100 was a bit high...would rather see it around $35-$40 - BUT, in the end, it DOES move more air than the $18 box fan, and has some features that make it worth the cost (electrically reversible intake/exhaust, less noise, expanding side panels to give it a perfect fit with any size window, fused safety plug, Storm Guard feature, etc.) - and given that there's basically no competition in the field any more due to the prevalence of air conditioning, I can't expect pricing to be at super-low highly-competitive rates

CONS:
* Switch knob kept popping off...had to tighten up the screws under it and then put a dab of Krazy Glue on it (but that solved it)
* Not widely available in stores - because air conditioners' prices have come down so much in the last 15-20 years, the demand for genuine whole-house window fans has gone way down, meaning that this fan is usually a special-order or online-only item, either of which generally entail waiting times and shipping costs (though your local Grainger branch may have one of the ones relabeled Air King in stock)

-----

All in all, I am being really unfairly picky here, and I think this is a fabulous product that I sincerely hope doesn't get discontinued. It's the right unit for the job, it looks good, and it does a better (and quieter) job that the all-metal models from years past. It's also very energy-efficient. Of what's available on the market in 2009, it is the best of the best, hands down, nothing else even comes close. I have ZERO "buyer's remorse" about this purchase, and would champion its virtues to anyone considering buying one. A great product!

Customer Reviews

This fan moves some air...
We bought this fan as an alternative to a ceiling mount fan because our mobile home has no attic (cathedral ceilings). It is 20x40 and typically designed with a central hallway. Our house would see lots of sunshine in the afternoon and then heat sink until 8 or 9 o'clock, just miserable hot inside to spend an evening. We live in the SF Bay Area. It was always much cooler outside at 8pm than inside...

I installed this fan in half an hour, you can still keep the screen and close the window, though see thru privacy is a bit of an issue. Nevertheless, this fan moves some air, plenty for us, even on low. I haven't turned it above low because I was afraid it would actually start sucking bugs THRU the front screen. 8-) It actually creates quite a breeze in the hallway and is exchanging the air more than ten times an hour - ON LOW!

This unit is well built by American hands and I don't know why anyone would opt for a $2000 (installed professionally with gable vents) whole house attic fan, when the sacrifice of one window and $200 does the job so nicely.

The cat is currently sitting on the front "intake" window sill and I can see her fur moving in the breeze, created soley by the fan because it is dead calm outside. I am convinced that you could cook fish in this house, turn on the fan and in ten minutes you would never know what was for dinner.

Get this fan. It will change the quality of your life.

Good Exhaust Fan
This fan works very well in moving the air in our house especially during those muggy, sticky heatwave days. Customer service is great--our first fan only worked for a few minutes, they sent us another one without any hassles.
Whole House Fan - no lie here
This is a large window fan, has 3 speeds forward and 3 speeds reverse. Moves a lot of air and has no issues
cooling a 2200' house. This fan has to be installed in a window - so plan on putting two small screws in
the window casing to hold it in. The best part of this fan is I can close the window without having to take
the fan down or out - great for those flash storms that come up or when you don't need/want the fan.
This fan does what it was designed to do - its big and a little "ugly" but it sure works 100%
Loving that Air King 9166 20"
I love this product. Even though it is a bit noisy when I'm the room where it is located, the noise level is not a problem in the rest of the house and it does a super job at cooling my 3 bedroom ranch in Stone Mountain, GA. I mean it really does a great job and it gets hot in Georgia.
Air King 9166
Installation very easy, just four screws. But it always pays to read the instructions (as these are shipped with side panels reversed/to save space). CHECK YOUR SHIPMENT BEFORE YOU SIGN FOR IT! Mine arrived in a wet box, cardboard forms soggy, torn bottom, missing one strap on the outside of the box (it's rather large awkward container, and the Carrier may be tempted to use the straps as a handle?). I live in the same state that the fan shipped from. The container was beat-up when it got here, but the fan was rugged enough to survive the 200 mile journey to my door. Barely.
It's a great fan. Well designed direct drive/no belts/no lubrication/finger guards everywhere. Even comes with a fuse in the 3-prong grounded plug. I would recommend this fan for anyone. But they could have used a little more thought on their packaging materials.

Customer Reviews

The lasko 16" fan
The fan arrived broken. The screws that holds the extensions pulled out. I used it anyway. Otherwise the fan works fine.
No good - if you already have air conditioning.
Did not work well in our house, so I returned it. I thought it would help circulate the air upstairs (in addition to the air conditioning) but was not a good idea! However, the customer service we got in returning the unit was amazing. Way to go Amazon in partnership with [...]
Immediately Returned After One Look
The manufacturer's name was completely misleading. I thought it was a metal fan. However, it was made entirely of plastic including the casing. As soon as I saw that I packed it back up and returned it. Plastic fans do not push the air anywhere as much as a metal fan. There is no comparison. I need a new exhaust fan and this one would absolutely not do. I did not even have to turn it on to know.
The cool night breeze
Bought two of these fans because they have the exhaust and intake feature. Installation took about ten minutes, template was right on. One fan failed within the first thirty hours so I had to return the item . Return was not very taxing, company sent me an RMA form for FedEx. Had to drive to return sight which was only two miles. Wanted exchange but none was available. Like so many other reviews, Lasko has a problem with the on-off knob and it's habit of falling off. One fan's knob was already off when I opened the box. Second fan's knob was unfunctional till I got out the trusty super glue. Knob indicator is white on white background and difficult to see with older eyes. Magic marker solved that little problem.
All this being said, fan rules. Pretty quiet if you shim a little, and the cool air this fan draws in at night, on exhaust, makes me have to cover up. I placed mine in the kitchen window, and cracking the bedroom window brings in the sweetest cool breeze. Minor objections aside, I would recommend this fan. Second fan has been flawless since 7-22. Hope this continues.
Not a value at the cost
I just installed this- drilled holes into my window frame and everything! I am concerned that the plastic is flimsy- the fan is tilting out from the window because of its own weight. The high speed is hardly better than the box fan it's replacing if at all. The switch is plastic and doesn't seem like it will last too long. I am really concerned for those with small children who might buy this as I believe a tug on the cord could bring it crashing in on them. Also, if you don't have screens and are depending on this to block the window off when expanded, don't! Once it gets out to about 34", it has hole cutouts that allow air through when the unit is not expanded.

Product Description

It can also do both simultaneously, because each of the two fans can be set independently to unsheathe in or exhaust out, allowing the unit to exchange inside and face air.
With a secluded control for convenient adjustment, this double window fan draws in brand-new, cool air from the outside or exhausts stale, hot air from in quod. It can also do both simultaneously, because each of the two fans can be set independently to draw in or exhaust out, allowing the piece to exchange inside and outside air. Operable either manually or automatically--with its thermostat turning the fans off and on to take a selected temperature--the unit has three speeds, electronic controls, and an LCD shroud showing the selected temperature and the room temperature. The outlying control (two AAA batteries are included) alters hurriedness, manual/automatic operation, air-flow control, and temperature.

The twin fan is designed to fit double-hung, vertical-slider, and casement windows. A built-in 7-inch extender and two 3-inch extenders permit tax fitting for windows from 24 to 37 inches as much as possible. Quiet
This is a very quiet fan, which justifies for me the price difference to your garden variety noisy $20 fan.
I don't like that it stops when the temperature is below 60, but it doesn't bug me that much.
The overall effectiveness and performance of the Bionaire BW2300
I have experienced overall satisfaction with the user-friendliness, the available features, and the effective performance of both of the units I had purchased through Amazon. Not only did I feel that it was worth the cost with "no tax and no shipping/handling" charges applied, but the at-the-door delivery was very expeditious having received each seperate shipment on the third and fifth day with the weekend included. This is a testimony of complete customer satisfaction and earned business in the making; with appreciation...
kitchen fan
this fan turned out as expected. seemingly good quality, excellent features and quiet operation.
Love, love, love this fan!!!!
I recently ordered this fan to replace a 5+ yr old Holmes 2 speed, manually reversible. I could not be happier! The fan is quiet and packs a mighty motor. The features are astounding. Last night I slept with it on the thermostat, never even heard it turn off and on. Its so much quieter than my Holmes cheapy, and it is a true luxury to adjust air flow without having to turn the fan around, and a remote control to boot! I have not experienced the thermostat heating from the motor. I love this fan! I can't wait to save enough to order a second one so I don't have to move this one from my living room to bedroom. Great product, great value, highly recommend.
big fan of the fan
I've pretty much had this thing running non-stop in a window since I got it. The fans are powerful and draw plenty of air either in, out, or through an exchange. I can't wait for fall when I can pull outside evening air into my unit. So far, it's great!

Customer Reviews

light weight, efficient, and a little noisy
This product is easily moved around, as it is light weight, and fits the window , very well, as it has an adjustable side. The main negative I find, is that it is noisy. It has a loud "whinney" type noise. So, if you're going to use it to bring in the cool air for just a while, then turn it off, it is great. However , if you are going to allow it to stay running while you sleep, it may take some getting used to. All in all, I find it efficient and an inexpensive way to cool the room or several rooms. It works just as easily as an exhaust fan, when turned around.
cheap window fan
This was the least expensive window fan available with Prime shipping at the time I bought it for 29.47. It works as well as you'd expect, but it is pretty loud. Changing the speed from HI to LO doesn't really make it any quieter, it just changes the pitch of the noise. Other than that it works fine.
Fan for Basement Window
This product definitely gave me the AC feeling in the basement office as well as the fresh air I wanted.
didnt work for more than 2 weeks
Its a really bad product. I hated it since I opened it. It looks so small and fragile and it actually is. The fan is a window fan and there is no way you could make it stand on ground. It could only be installed in a window and there is no way you could use it inside room without additional supports. May be chairs :p ...

Not only this, this is an inferior quality product. Fans are small and are not powerful. This stopped working suddenly one fine morning after 10-15 days. I am returning it and am asking for refund from amazon.
DANGER!

Holmes 7 Twin Window Fan, HAWF2021-U

I have I believe THIS fan for my living room. It has two fans that you can control to exhalst or blow IN house. Its ALSO has a temperature setting that you can set so it goes off and on as temperature reachers its goals.

HERE IS A POSSIBLE BAD PROBLEM. IF ANYONE HAS THIS TYPE MODEL CEHCK THIS OUT YOURSELF!

Plus the unit in. turn it on to see if it works. If it does work then turn the unit OFF. BUT LEAVE it PLUGGED in. About an hour or two later the unitl gets HOT to the touch right at teh TOP, FACE of the unit. Right about the button on mine that controls it. Mine also has a lite bottom that says 70Degrees at this area. ITS HOT even when unit is NOT turned on! JUST plugged in! TRY IT you will unplug it like I do now.

Apevia X-Jupiter Jr G Mid Tower ATX Case | Mid Tower,ATX,Case,Apevia,X-Jupiter ...

Closer Look: X-Jupiter Extrinsic

Apevia is a well known name with the addict community, formerly under the name Aspire. While they are not well known for their leading end cases, they have always built well constructed mid-range cases with heed to detail. From the glossy fa finish to the ornament free handle bays, the Apevia X-Jupiter JR G was built with relieve of use in mind.

The Apevia X-Jupiter JR G packaging is a rather appealing box thorough with all the pertinent specs manifestly printed on the casing.

Once pulled from the box, we can see that the Apevia X-Jupiter JR G has been crowded well with your typical Styrofoam end caps to intercept damage when shipping.

Once the Styrofoam and face plastic bag were removed, we found the front and side encased in sweltering plastic sheets to further baulk any type of scratches from occurring during the unpacking deal with, which is not something you see on every case. Opinion I found this extra bit of packing a relief, knowing that the covering would be free of scratches to the deliver and window.

The front of the Apevia X-Jupiter JR G call attention to dual LCD temperature monitors to study case temperature, and cpu temperature, or whatever else you select to monitor. It all depends where you lieu the thermal sensors. It also has a fan controller boss on the front to help deliberate noise and cooling, giving the owner full control of both. The front also features a bezel door giving comfortable access to your CD/DVD drives. One of the biggest complaints about cases is a sheer front door, which the Apevia X-Jupiter JR G does not have. The door has a indomitable and well built take oneself to be sympathize to it, giving the operator the confidence that it will not weaken off with the first opening or random bump.

Exhaust Fans MEDIA
doves cooling off by a fan

Kitchens and bathrooms here have these in-window exhaust fans. The petty hatch is open which means it's on, blowing air out. These little guys unfaltering to take advantage of the cooler air to escape the heat this afternoon.

It was ~113 degrees surface when I took this...
