Has anyone tried the new Pur Flavored water filter, either faucet mount or pitcher? Do you like it or hate it?

Jun 16, 2007 by terimelton | Posted in Other - Food & Drink

I have not found one in the store yet, so I am not sure if the fruit flavor is chemical, or if there is artificial sweetner in it. My last Pur faucet mount died today, it was plastic and cracked in several places. And I had it less than a year. My previous metal one lasted 2 1/2 years. Yes I mean the housing, not the individual filters. So anyway I don't want to invest in the flavor type if I'm not going to like it. Anyone with experience? Or is Brita made better, more long lasting?

I haven't tried it; but it isn't a faucet mounted filter, it goes on a pitcher. Here's a link to a tv news caster review. Watch the video.

Sorry--I just checked the Pur site and it DOES come in a faucet mount. Go to: http://purflavor.safeprocessing.com/ for a $2 or $5 coupon.

yes it is great but it annoys me sometimes when my family talks about it

Just saw it advertise on the telly today. The peach sounded good. I think it would be tasty once in a while, but not on a daily basis.

Is the water stream when using the PUR water faucet mount supposed to be very slow?

Feb 09, 2007 by Mya | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs

I purchased the plastic 3 stage filtration faucet mount today for $25 to use in my kitchen, and the water stream is slow as molasses. It's also very narrow. Everything seems to be hooked up fine. Is the barrow water stream normal? It will take forever to fill up a gallon bottle of water at this rate. When I turn the mount up and off, and run unfiltered water the flow is normal. Thanks

I meant to say: Is the narrow water stream normal?

The water is slow because it has to go through all those filters and they cause a restriction. If your water pressure is low this even makes the water even slower

Anyone know how to recycle a PUR faucet-mounted water filter cartridge?

Jun 18, 2007 by Garbanzo | Posted in Green Living

Does the company accept these cartridges to recycle? Or is this another item to add to our overflowing landfills? Appreciate any knowledge or suggestions.

The activated carbon can be considered good for the environment. It's essentially charcoal. As for the plastic outer packaging, you should have considered the environmental impact of that during your purchase decision...

What is the best faucet mount water filtration system. Pur 3 stage filter vs. pur reg. filter?

Apr 29, 2006 by birdie | Posted in Other - Home & Garden

The pur 3 stage filter becasuse it gives you better tasting water because of the last stage in which it filters the water over select minerals and it also cleans your water better with stage one and stage two...the downs to this three stage filter though is that you have to change the fliters AND minerals unlike the one stage filter where you must change just one filter....the three stage filter is also a little bigger and bulkier....in the end both filters have good sides and bad sides but i would go with the 3 stager

Customer Reviews

Leaked, cracked
I had used this brand years ago and it was great, apparently they have reduced their standards for durability.

Mine developed a leak where it attached to the faucet, no amount of tightening or loosening or o-ring replacement would fix it. This was 1 week after installing. I figured oh well, and kept using it. It then developed two little tiny cracks on the indicator window, out of which squirts the water - across the room.

I thought maybe it was just me, I must have done something inadvertantly and just couldn't figure out what it was - then I came and saw the reviews when thinking about reordering. Glad I read the reviews first - seems like many people have had this issue with this product. Badly designed, cheaply manufactured - try another brand.
Useful while our town is laying new water pipe
Our whole town is on spring water, which normally tastes wonderful right out of the tap, but recently the town began a huge project to dig up and change out all the water pipes. We started noticing that the water was not tasting as good (hopefully a temporary situation until the work is completed and the pipes have all been flushed out), so I got one each of the new PUR 3-stage faucet-mount chrome filters, the "low-profile" horizontal one (FM-9400B) and the vertical one (FM-3700B). The directions for both are spare but adequate. If you follow them step by step, you should have no problems.

Comparing the two models, I'd say which style you choose is a matter of personal preference. We have standard faucets, not one of the newer designer kinds, so we had no trouble with installation or function with either type. I have a large farm-style sink and never need to rotate the filter to rest underneath my faucet, so either one works for me. For those who want the full 360-degree rotation capability, the horizontal mount would probably be the best for most faucets to ensure proper clearance. Personally, I like the look of the vertical-mount filter better, but the horizontal-mount one is a little easier to unscrew to change the filter. I speculate that the vertical one might be less likely to leak (if/when it starts leaking) due to gravity, but I haven't used these long enough to know if this would be the case.

Both models snap to and unsnap from the faucet easily, and both look good. If you don't look too closely, they look like they are made of stainless steel; they are not as heavy as stainless steel would be, however, and this is a good thing. Both horizontal and vertical models use the same style of filter and both have the green-yellow-red indicator light to alert you to the condition of the changeable filter. Both seem to work about the same. Like I said, which one you choose is largely a matter of personal preference.

One important point I'd like to make: Clearly, to keep from leaking, the filter enclosure cap must fit snugly, and it does on both models. But I have arthritis and found that I could not unscrew the hand-tightened cap by myself. Fortunately, somebody else in my household was able to do it for me.
vertical or horizontal which to choose
I have tried both this vertical upright model and the horizontal low profile model. Both models offer the same great filtering and they do most definitely make your tap water taste much better. We have city water that is just horrible, I have trouble even brushing my teeth with it the chlorine is so strong. This filter made the water taste just fine, I was actually surprised how good it was.

As for which one to choose the vertical or the horizontal? I would only buy the horizontal lower profile one. My kitchen faucet is a moderately raised arch and I found that the vertical upright was in my way because the filter is too tall to swing away under the faucet, it only swings up to it leaving a big obstacle in your line of sight and in the way when washing bigger pots. I don't know of any faucet tall enough that this vertical model would swing underneath. Of the two designs I would only recommend the low profile horizontal model not this one. The horizontal offers the same filtration and actually seemed to have much better water pressure and best of all it swings away under the faucet so it is not in your way nearly as much. They both take some getting use too but the lower profile would be the one to get.

I like that a green light indicator flashes when you turn the lever on for filtered water letting you know it is still clean and safe. The filter is very easy to replace simply unscrew the capsule and stick a new one in. I was also able to find large discounted packages of filters at our local warehouse store.

We have been purchasing drinking water for the past year from a local reverse osmosis bottling place and while it tastes good there were some issues. Number one reverse osmosis takes everything out of the water which makes the water unusable by your body. My husband suffered a heat stroke last year shortly after we switched to r.o. water and was told by the doctor to add electrolytes because his body could not properly hydrate no matter how much he drank because all the minerals that make the water available to the body were stripped away. I had no idea why I was drinking so much and always still felt thirsty. I have not had that problem with this great PUR filter product!
Easy install, works great.
It was easy to install. It came with 4 different kinds of attachment for various types of faucets. I have to remove the tip from my faucet before I can install it. Took me just 5 minutes to set it up.

It works very good. You have to let it flow for 5 minutes to make the filter ready for use. At first the flow is somewhat slow, but after letting it run as mentioned above, it goes on pretty smoothly. The water is clear and does not taste anything metallic or artificial.

The filter housing can be pushed to rotate out of the way if you need to, like when you need to wash your hands or do some dishes. The switch from filtered water to plain water is just an easy flick of the switch. It also has an LED indicator to let you know when is time to change the filter. You can buy the PUR RF-9999-6 3 Stage Faucet Mount Filter, 6-Pack in 6-pack.

My only concern is how long it can hold. I only own this for a week. I will update my review if it fails to perform as it should. Most of the materials are made of plastic. The chrome finish looks really good, very shiny and it looks like real metal until you actually touch it.

Easy install & convenient to use...water tastes good, too!
We have the PUR 1800 dispenser in our fridge, as well as a few Brita pitchers.
This faucet-attached filter installed very easily, is convenient to use, and is great for drawing filtered water that does not need to be cold...such as for coffee, tea, filling ice trays...or just drinking (some people prefer their drinking water at room temp here).
Recommended.

The filter is very easy to replace simply unscrew the capsule and stick a new one in. There are two white buttons on the top if you want to take the whole unit off quickly just press and it comes off the faucet easily so you can unscrew the filter compartment much faster. I have been using it for several weeks and so far have had no problems with it falling off by itself, it seems securely mounted. There are several different fittings in the box, perhaps putting the wrong one on was the problem some reported of this unit falling off. I have had no problem. I was also able to find large discounted packages of filters at our local warehouse store.

We have been purchasing drinking water for the past year from a local reverse osmosis bottling place and while it tastes good there were some issues. I had no idea why I was drinking so much and always still felt thirsty. I have not had that problem with this great PUR filter product! Also, it is much cheaper and far less of a chore to occasionally buy filters then it is to have to go buy expensive bottled water every week. I love this PUR filter!
Pur pur fm-9400b: Pops off after awhile
first of all this is for the recently advertised vertical mount pur faucet that shows a lady's hand popping the filter on the tip of the faucet and hearing it "snap" on. i dont how these other reviews got on here but amazon needs to fix it. disregard any reviews before 2010 at least, as this filter, as far as i know, wasnt released until the summer 2010.

i have had this filter for about 3-4 weeks. this past week and today i have watched the filter literally pop off and launch into the sink. i thought what was happening was it was somehow unscrewing itself from the swivel action, so i tightened the black mounting tip on the edge of the faucet mouth a lot harder. tonight while trying to make myself a glass of water, i turned on the water and it launched breaking my glass. i tried screwing it back on and running tests and each time it popped off. upon close inspection i noticed that the threading inside the black mounting tip had worn down. since the only time i screwed on the black mounting tip was the initial install and the incidents where it popped off (two times). it doesnt make any since that im seeing wear n tear in threading that i would expect to see after a year or so. i also suspect that possibly the water pressure is too high, but dont they test these things at different pressure levels? i gave it a one star because it cant be salvaged and i cant utilize the filter. i threw out the old pur filter (which these reviews on here seem to be based on) because it started cracking and leaking, but at least it lasted for 2 years.

im not sure if i can return this item to the store i bought it at, or if i contact pur themselves. i will let you all know when i can!

oh after some reviewing it looks like i have the horizontal mount, the one that looks like the filter holder is laying down vs standing upright.
Easy to Install. Improves Water Quality. Bulky
This little filter is very well thought out. There are three things that really stood out about it.

1. It is amazingly simple to install. I needed a pair of pliers to remove my old aerator but after that was off I put the new one one and attached the filter. Whole thing too about 6 minutes. Five minutes to find pliers and a minute to screw the new aerator on and install the filter housing. Easy-peasy.

2. We have nice tasting water in our town. It doesn't taste like chemicals or other forms of water nastiness. But it is amazing the difference in taste with this. It really does help. It is also much faster to get filtered water than from our fridge.

3. The silly thing is really bulky. It don't know who to get around this on their part, but it is really large. I have found to fill my big pot with water I have to remove it to fit the pot in the sink and then replace it. The little clips are easy enough to push in to get the filter off.

All and all I like it.
Great product finally a water filter worth buying
I like how you screw in the top part and the whole unit clicks in place. Should of bought this one in the beginning. So far so good will give it 5 stars . If it gives me problems will update my review.

Customer Reviews

good product
This product produces good tasting water without having to buy plastic bottles or have water delivered to my home
doesn't do what it advertises for pure water
The copy in Amazon talks about "Premium filtration". The Owners Manual, which you can see only after opening the package, clearly states "The faucet filter is not intended to purify water. Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection..." That's quite a difference. Also, the flavor packet had a use by date in 2009. I'm writing this in August 2010. $45 wasted. Seller was Bradsdodads and they promptly refunded purchase price and shipping.
How to work around mean old P&G and enjoy your great filter
PUR Water Filter Review \ Hack

Once, long ago, PUR was a great company with great water filtering technology. I still love their filters! Unfortunately, a big bad company named Proctor and Gamble bought them and messed them over in favor of customer abuse. This was accomplished using two methods. The first method is called 'planned obsolescence' whereby their faucet mount apparatus leak and die briefly after the end of the warranty period. (It didn't used to be that way in the good old days). The second method is called 'timed death' whereby their apparatus lock up their enclosed filters at a preset volume of filtered water, whether the filter is actually used up or not.

Planned obsolescence can be overcome by calling up Proctor and Gamble BEFORE your warranty runs out, and letting them know that your PUR apparatus is squirting water all over your kitchen. Ask them to send you a replacement or a replacement certificate. If need be, call repeatedly asking to speak to the President of P&G, never taking 'no' for an answer. Then take your certificate and get another PUR apparatus. This will provide you with a lifetime for the apparatus more representative of the lifetime of original PUR apparatus. You've cheated no one. P&G's cheat on you has been overcome.

The timed death lockout of your filter is extremely easy to overcome. Pull out the filter from the apparatus. This resets the nasty timing device to zero again. Put your filter back in. TADA! You're done. Your filter will work as before. Note, however, that PUR filters do eventually get clogged with stuff. You'll know when to change it.

I hope that helps everyone restore goodness to the universe. I still love PUR filters better than any other brand and wouldn't be without them. It's P&G's customer abuse that's not worth liking. Shame on you P&G.
Fantastic for the price
We've owned it for about a month now and it works fantastic. Water pressure is good, much better than other filters we've used. Doesn't take very long at all to fill up a glass. Installation was stupidly simple and I was up and running in no time. Water quality is great coming out of the unit, very good taste and no odor. I can REALLY tell the difference when we make coffee or tea, much more tasty.

Really my only complaint is that it is kind of cheap feeling, which isn't a huge deal since it wasn't expensive.
They've re-engineered it...
We've owned this unit before, and it sprung a leak after a year of heavy use. So, we bought another one last week...

Note: the picture shown is not what came out of the box. The twisty knob for switching between filtered and unfiltered is now more of a smooth action lever than a knob. Installation is also different, it now clicks onto the faucet rather than screwing in. Also, the filtered water flow seems a little faster than the previous model. We don't really use the flavor feature, so I can't comment on that. I'm hoping that the manufacturer listened to past complaints and tried to address them with this new design.

Update: After two weeks of use, it has started falling off the faucet a few times a day, so much for new and improved. I'm sending it back...

Customer Reviews

Can't handle the pressure.
The housing is terrible. Cracked by month 1. Gushing by month 2. The only good thing is that it still works as long as I barely turn on the water pressure. Our water pressure isn't even that high at full blast, but it was enough to crack it. If you buy this, do not turn up the pressure all the way when using it. Actually, just don't buy this junk.
Outrage
In line with many posted comments, the mounting assembly is an inferior product that it is being pushed on the public by a "reputable" brand. This is unconscionable. PUR should be ashamed of themselves.....and I think they know the hoax they are perpetrating, as their customer service is impossible to get service from. I am a lost customer and I am sure that I am not alone. Their strategy of selling the hardware at a low cost to hook you into continuing to buy a string of expensive filters needs to be re-thought before they go out of business. The hardware should have some modicum of quality. These do not.
If you use an adapter....
I purchased both the horizontal and the vertical, after the horizontal fell off..still have both of them. What a crock, I hope they take them back. Bought locally, fortunately. After the filter gets heavy with water it just falls off in the sink when you go to turn it on. When you use the adapter it's suppose to just click into place and it does click but it will..., grrrrr, fall off, my experience anyway.
Bad Product Design
I have the same problems others have had with the filter housing cracking and leaking. It cracked around the window for the indicator that let's you know when to change the filter before I even had a chance to change the first filter (1 month). The water from this leak rides down the side of the housing and into the filtered water stream. If you have ever seen the dirty side of a filter imagine water from that leaking into what you are about to drink; not very sanitary. Also the faucet attachment started to leak which would spray a tiny stream onto the counter.

It's products like this that doesn't help the economy. Who wants to give their hard earned money away. With every bad product like this I grow more reluctant to spend.

Customer Reviews

Great filter lasts 2-3 months
Great filter lasts 2-3 months for us. We have been using it for past few years (along with 2 stage earlier) and we have no complaints. PUR customer service is good too. They will give you coupon if anything goes wrong with your product.
Great filter, great deal
These are by the best tasing faucet filters. They don't have that off carbon taste like the cheaper pitcher filters and they handle up to 100 gallons (depending on water quality). This 6 pack is a great deal as your typically paying less than you would for singles and 3 packs.

PUR 3 Stage Water Filters 6-pack
We have used a PUR Water Filter for a while. This is one of the best prices for a 6-Pack that I have seen. Our water taste so much better with this filter than water right out of the tape. One filter will last us about 2 1/2 months.
