Does anyone have experience with Shaw hardwood flooring versus Bruce hardwood flooring?
Jul 20, 2007 by SmartestOne | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I am trying to compare differences between two similar hardwood floors (Bruce and Shaw). Does anyone have any experience or reccomendation between the two (look, wear, etc)?
Shaw is certainly a higher quality product. We carry it in our store and have never had a complaint. There are a wide variety of styles and price ranges. Find out more at www.shawfloors.com. One thing you will notice with a hard surface is the hollow sound in the room. Solve that by adding area or throw rugs.

How do I repair some planks of Bruce Hardwood Flooring?
Jan 28, 2009 by kdunn1003 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
Our Christmas tree stand leaked quite a bit and we didn't find out until after we took the tree down. Is it possible to replace just a few planks? We have the planks here, but since they are the lock and groove kind, I have no idea how we could take the old ones out and replace them since it isn't close to the edge of the room.
To remove a single board, cut it down the center with a circular saw set to the thickness of the board. Be sure to stop short of the end of the board. Use a pry bar to pull the piece out. To install the new piece, cut the bottom of the groove side off. If the piece is not the exact same length as the one you are taking out, cut it to length. Insert the tongue on the end of the board into the groove of the adjoining piece, as well as the tongue that runs the length of the board. Push the piece n place and nail it with a few finish nails or brads. Putty the holes and you are done. Hope this helps.

Has anyone had experience with Bruce engineered hardwood flooring in their kitchen?
Apr 27, 2008 by Radacheck | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I am about to have it installed--glued to vinyl over concrete. Moisture level OK. Does it wear well? Does it dent easily? What are the pros and cons on engineered flooring?
I am a kitchen designer and have experience working with and selling flooring as well. A lot of my clients are doing wood or engineered wood in the kitchen these days. The way I see it, every type of flooring has its pros and cons. Tile for example, is very resisitant to water damage and seems perfect for a kitchen environment! However, it comes with its draw backs; it chips if you drop something on it and it cracks as the house settles. It is also cold. Some people will do vinyl in the kitchen (some people call it linolium). This product holds up well to foot traffic, but it is a soft material. If you drop a knife on it, it will stick right in. Then you've got wood and engineered wood. Some people shy away from these products because they think they will get seriously water damaged. My opinion; no need to worry. Obviously, if you have a major leak under the sink or dishwasher, address it quickly. You should address something like that quickly REGARDLESS of what type of floor is under it. But as far as a little bit of water goes...like you drop a beverage on the floor, don't worry about it. Clean it up, but don't panic. If it sits there for a few minutes while you go find a towel or sponge, its no big deal. If your dog comes in out of the rain and leaves a puddle you don't notice for an hour or two, don't worry. The wood/ engineered wood is tightly sealed. It will not start disolving and warping before your eyes! It holds up just fine. The advantage of engineered wood over hardwood? You don't have to refinish it. It doesn't wear down the way hardwood does. Engineered wood floors have been very popular in Europe for a long time. Much longer than its been around in the states. It's actually an old and reliable technology, so don't worry. It would have gone out of style a long time ago if it didn't work.
So rest assured you've made a good choice! Good luck and enjoy :)

Kitchen floors Bruce hard wood or laminate flooring?
Jan 27, 2007 by t-bone | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
its only 10 x 9 but i have bruce everywhere but in the hallway and kitchen, hallway im going ceramic but i was thinking laminate any suggestions would be great.
When I run across someone who wants to put hardwood in the kitchen I try to convince them to go with tile or linoleum. The reason being wood floors and water do not mix. Its guaranteed come back business for the floor installer. I know this from experience as a flooring installer. The guy I worked for would put in the agreement that he was not responsible for the floor after it was installed in the kitchen area. Most people would opt for the tile or linoleum after talking to them and showing them pictures of water damage in other kitchens. Its totally up to you what you want. Good luck.

Similar wood flooring to Bruce abc226?
May 17, 2007 by AtLarge | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
Can someone recommend a similar wood flooring to the Bruce abc226?
Seeking 3mm minimum wear layer, prefer 3-ply over 5-ply, red oak in a honey color, 3".
Maybe Pergo, there are many hardwood flooring choices out there, many colors. DO NOT buy from "closeouts" "liquidators" the usually don' have enough of what you are looking 4. You may also have to buy a LARGE quantity because they may not have it when you need more. The lots are different so the flooring will have different colors running through it and will look awful.
