We are thinking of installing granite tile flooring in kitchen, hallway and dinning area. What are the pros and cons of Granite flooring.
We live in CA, We have 2 big dogs.
Retailer is advising us against it saying it gets too cool in winter, Bad for knees
Any suggesions.
Thanks
Granite will last a very long time. However, granite has to be specially sealed, unlike tile. I recommend that you look at the sealed version of the granite you are interested in to see if you still like the color of it after it is sealed. It will get cool in the winter, especially if your house has a concrete pad foundation. Just like any hard surface, the granite could be hard on your knees and feet. It also will be probably a good bit more expensive than a lot of other flooring options you choose. One last thing is that it may also be harder to clean than other flooring surfaces depending on how rough the surface is the joint size, etc. You ultimately should go with what you like best, just keep those things in mind when you pick what you are going with.

We had ceramic tile installed in our kitchen. I hate it. The grout is hard to keep clean and it is harder on one's knees. I assume granite would be the same way. Also make sure the granite is not smooth where it could be slippery.

I prefer porcelain tile in a diagonal layout. It is very easy to clean.
Use a deeper color grout. The hue should closely resemble the tone of the soil around your house. You have two big dogs so you know what comes with the territory. There is a difference between clean and spotless.
When porcelain tile chips it is practically undetectable unlike ceramic tile. It costs more but if you are considering granite then cost must not be an issue. Maintaining granite is not extreme but I wouldn't use it in high traffic areas.
The use of decorative rugs in the kitchen where you stand alleviates the stress on your body.

getting rid of oil stain on granite flooring?
May 25, 2008 by wantoknw | Posted in Cleaning & Laundry
we have light grey colored granite flooring.About 1-1.5 mnths earlier, guess welding oil was dropped on the floor due to which theres a huge oil stain.the stain looks drk grey - black. i dont knw the name or the type of the granite used, was told that its porous.iv tried using milk/talcum powder etc but it doesnt seem to help.minus carpetting the floor, wt can i do?i badly need the stain removed.
You need to find an industry standard "poultice" to absorb the stain. And once you've taken care of it, you might want to consider re-sealing the granite.

How do you re-new granite flooring stain?
Jan 27, 2007 by debe20062000 | Posted in Cleaning & Laundry
A friends cat, vomited on her granite kit. floor, which left a stained type effect, such as dulling look. How does she re-new the finish?
Oh goodness! Don't use any vinegar or sandpaper that's just more damage. Get a dampened soft rag and use a base like baking soda. It has a little grit and and a little elbow grease will polish the floor up. Buff with a dry cloth to test your progress.

which one is the best for house flooring? granite or marble?
Apr 20, 2008 by Elango a | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I am constructing a new house and it will come to an end. please suggest me which one is best for house flooring? granite or marbles? if granite, which color? I have to lay for 2000 square feet. please help me.
Travertine is a great real stone option
Personally I would look at porcelain tile first - ton less maintenance and much easier to clean
I would avoid marble and granite for flooring, too much maintenance and they get really slick and show everything.
Require polishing to look nice

How practical is it having granite flooring throughout the house?
Apr 26, 2008 by modistreet | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I hear it makes the house colder and uses more energy to heat the house?
Not very practical unless you have a maid. I have a neighbor who did this and you have to clean it daily! Plus when you mop it, it must be dried. You also need to be EXTREMELY careful because if there is ANY water or liquid spilled, a person will fall easily and can hurt themselves badly!!!!
It looks beautiful but so does exotic woods and they are easier to maintain and a bit less slippery when wet!
