Indoor kennel flooring or something that will handle dog accidents?

Oct 01, 2007 by mythreeiggys | Posted in Dogs

I have 4 Italian Greyhounds and they can not hold their bladder to long. I have a 24 x 24 addition off the side of my house that we do not use and I want to make it a room for them. They are not completely house broken as many IG's aren't and I was wondering if there was any really good flooring besides linolum that I could use that would not soak up and pee and not smell.

Put newspaper on the floor and pick it up and replace it when they use it. 4 layers of newspaper absorb good.

Tile flooring is great. It may be more costly, but in my home kennels I switched to tile from linoleum because tile doesnt absorb odor and won't soften like linoluem. Most importantly buy a quality, pet safe cleaner. I use Simple Green, which removes odor and germs really well. Obviously rugs or carpets are a no-go, they will get ruined too fast. I'd try some less exspensive plain colored tile, nothing too fancy because you'll pay for that and besides the dogs don't care about decor anyway.

You have a problem. The only thing I can come up with are these rubber garage pads they are one single piece that would about fit one side of a double garage or a single. You can get them at a Sam's Club. I think they are under $200.00
They may be called garage floor liner???

Tile is a good way to go. Or you could look into laying down some cement. It would be a litte harder but work all the same. It depends on how much you can spend. Do your research and figure out whats best for you

Pergo !

If your dogs are healthy and not very young or old or have medical issues there is no reason why they should not be able to be house trained...unless you are asking them to hold thier bladders for more than 8 hours at a time.

Tile is preferable, with tile 'baseboards' and a waterproof membrane underneath like in a shower so that once the pee eventually works it's way down into the grout(it could even if it's sealed) you will have a secondary system so your structure doesn't get soaked with pee- that is just about the only thing I can think of. Ceramic, not real stone or anything, if you think about it ceramic is great for this...your toilet is probably ceramic and it doesn't smell(I hope not atleast lol). Laminate flooring is ok for once in a long while messes but daily messes would ruin it in no time. If you went with tile you could also get in-floor heating which is going down in price rapidly and I'm sure your IG's would love that!

If your addition is on a concrete pad you can get some of the garage floor paint stuff and paint the floor - that should be waterproof, if a little chilly.

Good luck.

What is the best kind of flooring for a Boarding Kennel?

Oct 27, 2008 by Radio:ACTIVE | Posted in Other - Pets

I.e Tiles, Rubber, Etc

Please help me I need to say what kind of flooring I would use (because Im designing a Kennel for a college assignment)

SERIOUS ANSWERS PLEASE =D

we have found the best flooring in kennels is a concrete base then it is painted with a non slip floor paint, the use of tiles is not suitable as the dog can slip and hurt itself if they get we and rubber some dogs rip it up and chew it, concrete base's help to keep the nails down and if it is painted with non slip floor paint it is safer for the dog and when the floor gets wet by weeing or moping, when it comes to flooring you need to think can the dog rip it or chew it for boarding kennels health and safety is important so any material that can be chewed is not allowed and the flooring needs to be non slip for dogs and people and a material that is easily cleaned down and able to be disinfected when the dog goes and a new dog comes in, you can use lino but this can be ripped and chewed and it need to be a sealed floor so there is no cross contamination between dogs, most kennels use a concrete floor, usually the kennels are heated and the beds raised off the floor so the cold can not seep through, best of luck with your assignment honey

outdoors dog kennel flooring?

Oct 26, 2006 by jonjoc3 | Posted in Dogs

i need some advise on what i could use as flooring for our outdoor dog kennel. we had grass but the dogs dug it all up now theres nothing but dirt and mud and the dogs come in filthy! i dont have alot of money to spend. any advice?
also could use advice on how to keep dirt from getting in there food and water bowls.

We've used gravel in our kennels for a long time, and it works well. Try 2-inch gravel -- you could try roadbase, but it contains a lot of dirt, as well. I don't like pea gravel because some dogs end up eating it, and it can cause problems down the road.

Our guys still dig (especially in the summer, when they're trying to make a cool spot to lie in), but the gravel deters digging if you spread enough in their kennels. Gravel is also better than cement (IMO) because it's easier to keep disinfected -- no urine smell. Plus, it's cheaper than laying a pad of concrete.

We lay chain link under the layer of gravel to stop our worst diggers.

If you get the dogs off the dirt, it stands to reason that there will be less dirt to end up in their water and food bowls. Do you leave the food bowls in the kennel permanently? You might pick them up after feeding -- keeps them out of the way, and from being drug through mud/feces.

For water, we buy the heavy duty rubber horse (grain) buckets from the feed store and hang them from the side of the kennel using a double-ended brass clip. That way, they're never knocked over/peed in or muddied, unless the dogs get dirty, and then decide to "wash" in them to cool off (which happens in the summer).

As someone else mentioned plenty of exercise and mental stimulation will also help the digging problem.

Good luck!

Any ideas for kennel flooring? We have concrete and my golden always smells like pee? I think he rolls in it

concrete is the way to go,it's your cleaning method that needs some work.it's also good if you can allow some dirt and grass in the area just for the purpose of allowing the animals a cooler, and softer surface to play and relax.a total surface of nothing but concrete is cruel .i would suggest a power washer or some good soap with a stiff bristle broom.

Any Ideas on Kennel Flooring?

Nov 12, 2008 by thch91 | Posted in Dogs

I have a yellow Lab. She is 5 years old and a complete house dog. I have an outdoor 10 x 10 kennel, I very rarely put her in it. I am going back to work and will be gone from the house for up to 14 hours a day, working 7PM to 7AM. I just need ideas on flooring.... I hate the idea of her being outside while i'm at work, I just don't know what else to do...

The Outdoor Kennel needs something for a floor. Any ideas on something rather cheap and easy that will keep her clean? My husband has a tarp for a roof fixed over the kennel. I am putting a dog house in the kennel that I am putting an outdoor heating pad in. I just need ideas for flooring. I was out looking at it this afternoon. I have indoor/outdoor carpeting in it now and some rubber belting. It has tall weeds growing through the carpet, and looks like dirt has composted from the leaves.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Tammy & Ms. Lindsey

Use stall mats (for horses). They are about an inch thick, and made of heavy rubber. You can easily cut them down to whatever size you need. They are extremely easy to clean, just sweep them off or hose them down. You can use any cleanser on them. Also, you can put down wood shavings on the mats (if you prefer), they are soft for the dog to lay on, and they make "accidents" easier to clean and more sanitary. They also keep a fresh smell in your kennel, and fleas don't particularly like certain types of wood shavings. Good Luck ! :)
