Can you install radiant floor heat over a concete slab?
Apr 28, 2007 by flinch | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
We're remodeling a house that has a rec room with a concrete slab floor. We do not want to have carpeting and I thought of installing a radiant heat system if that would be feasible. Or would we be better off with just using baseboard heaters? Thanks for your help.
Yes! Ther are a couple of different brands. I have used Suntouch for installtions, and have been happy with them. You will need an electrician to run to wiring for the themostat, and to do the actual hook up of the mats to the electricity.
If installing yourself, be sure to test it before putting tile over it. I would reccomend using a contractor who has expeience with it, though.
Also, large rooms will need to have a scale drawing made, and sent off to the manufacturer so they can make the material to fit your room exactly. Suntouch's materials that I have used can not be cut, or they will not work.
There are other brands, some that can be cut,but I haven't used them.
It is not inexpensive, but works very nice. Your feet will love not having cold floors in the winter!

i saw on a home improvement show a couple yrs ago where you could put this matting down w/ electrical wiriring running through it, sorta like an electric blanket. im sure you can put it down under a carpet as long as its got a UL rating.

Yes, but it will be expensive. There is a hot water system with the water tubes run in routered slots in 3/4" plywood. The plywood has to be fastened to the concrete with either a "Hilti" gun or drill and anchor system. Then, you have to cover that with at least another 1/4" of sanded plywood/luan for a tile floor or be very careful when installing a solid or engineered hardwood floor (not Pergo). When installing wood over this system, it's best to pressurize it with air while you install so that you know immediately if you've punctured a tube.
If you live in a cold climate, I would try to avoid electric heat. It's very expensive to run.

I have radiant floor heating. Without power, will my pipes freeze in the basement with no heat available?
Feb 12, 2007 by beakster505 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
My house was built 3 years ago with radiant floor heating in my basement which is living quarters. In the event of a power outage during a winter storm, my heating system would not run. What I need is ball park figure of the time that it would take to start freezing the water lines that are constructed within the cement slab floor. A brief outage obviously would be no problem. Lets say that at 10 F. the ice covered electric lines took 12 hours to get up and running. Probably, still cool. But at what length of time should I seriously consider going into debt for a generator? I'd rather buy a new genny than replace a radiant heating system. Or some Kerosone heaters to put on basement floor? We can survive without electric and provide some heat for the house for a few days but what would the danger be the the floor pipes freezing up because the water is not flowing. I have two non-electric heating devices for a 44x28 house, furnished basement & main floor. How prepared do I need to be?
it is certain that the fluid in your heating system is a mix of antifreeze and water a modern system should have this since it is more efficient and probably code in most areas.

Best flooring for radiant heat system?
Jul 22, 2008 by Aibrean | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
We currently have laminate wood floor in our great room (19x19') and we want to go with something more durable (it's already bowing) as we have radiant heat under the floor. We would like to go with real bamboo (cost effective and eco-friendly). Is this a good choice? What would you recommend?
We would like opinions on using bamboo...
and no it doesn't smell :)
In my opinion there are very few good choices for wood flooring over radient heat. The reason you cant put any wood over radiant heat is the change in heat dries the wood out. This is a problem because the wood shrinks as it dries in different rates along different axes. For example it will shrink more long ways than it will side ways. This causes cupping or twisting in the board. I have however installed mesquite flooring over radiant heat with success. This is due to mesquite's unique stability. Mesquite is the most stabel commercial wood available. Not only does it not shrink near as much as other woods but it shrinks the same along all three axes which prevents the cupping or twisting I mentioned earlier.
