Wood Flooring?
Apr 27, 2007 by ??!! | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I am planning on installing wood flooring onto a floor that is a concrete slab. One installer says to put engineered flooring on the floor in a floating method and/or glued. The other says to use 3/4 solid flooring nailed down. Any help?
Flooring obviously cannot be nailed over concrete without building a screed or wooden subfloor on top of it. You're going to want to glue down or float. Now, 5/16", 3/8", and 1/2" solid and engineered hardwood can be glued or floated. However solid wood is not recommended for any below grade application and will not be covered by warranty if the slab is a basement.
Of the two methods, I much prefer glue down hardwood over floating. The floor has a more solid feel and will not flex when you walk on it.
Engineered hardwood is different than solid in that it is made of 3, 5, or 7 layers of real wood, instead of one. This does not mean that the floor cannot be refinished but it does limit sanding to one time only.

Go with the 3/4 inch. It wears better, longer and has better insulation. You can re-finish it later if you want. The engineered floor is about half the thickness and doesn't refinish at all.

floating floor is the way to go, but....first need to lay down a vapor barrier, such as 15# tar paper, then the foam pad, and followed by the flooring. Remember keep a 1/4 inch gap all around the outside for expansion and contraction.

For the price a vapor barrier ad floating floor is the best option as its almost immune to water damage.

Because it's a concrete slab, your flooring will go through extremes of expansion and contraction. A naildown will suffer through the years, while the floating floor with the vapor barrier will glide over the concrete and fare much better through the years.

I Can confirm that you want a floating floor. The temperature is the key element. You do not want to nail down because there will be too much change.

Can laminate wood flooring in two adjoining rooms be mismatched?
Jan 26, 2008 by Britsta | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
We are moving into our first home and we are replacing the carpet in the living room with laminate wood flooring. The floor in the dining room is already laminate wood and joins up with the living room floor. We are trying to pick out new floors and are wondering if we can get a different color wood floor for the living room or if we need to match it perfectly with the dining room. Would mismatching the wood look tacky?? Calling all interior designers! I need your help!
What you are asking is a question of personal taste. I (being a wood lover) think it's kinda cool to bounce to contrasting wood off one another, But thats just me.

Can you place wood flooring on an uneven floor?
Aug 18, 2007 by quinidine | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
there is a long hallway in my house I'd like to have wood flooring. but my contractor says that at the end of the hallway there is a slight incline. he says wood flooring would have to stop there and be replaced with carpet. esthetically I think it would look awful. is what he says true or is there another way to keep it all wood?
Hardwood floor installation can be slowed by an uneven subfloor. Before installing hardwood floors, use a straight edge to find the humps and dips in the subfloor. Then, using a floor leveling compound or asphalt shingles, shim the dips so the floor is level.

what is the best type of wood for flooring that will resist scratches?

My dog's trimmed nails continue to scratch my wood flooring. I am thinking of either sanding the floors and use more polyurethene or install a different type of wood. I think the existing wood floors are oak veneers.

What is the best type of laminate wood flooring to be used on a concrete floor? Glue type or glue-less?

My parents and I are re-modeling parts of our home and we'd like to know what kind of laminate wood flooring could be used on a concrete floor. Glue or glueless?
Bear in mind that my parents are both home improvement people (Dad is a roofing supervisor; Mom works as a dept. manager for a local indie hardware store). However, they are open to advice and suggestions from others on what kind of laminate wood flooring to use on concrete floors.
Glue down laminate is obsolete now. They are all what they call ''floating'' floors now. Any major brand will suffice. You may just want to look and see how easy the planks go together before deciding. Some brands have a foam backing with a moisture barrier already glued to the back of them and some require that you buy the foam in a roll that has to be laid down first. Obviously the real cheap stuff is going to feel like walking on cardboard and the pricier stuff will feel like real wood. No laminate is intended for a full bathroom where water/moisture from a tub or shower is present.
