How do you clean efflorscence off of newly sealed slate flooring?

We just tiled the kitchen with natural slate and then sealed the tile and grout with special sealer, specifically for slate floors. About a week later, I am now noticing that 2 dark tiles have white "stains" on them, looks like they are in the tile because I have tried my slate cleaner and it goes away when wet but when it dries, the white discoloration is back. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this? Thanks for your help.
have you seen those white cleaning pads, i don't know who makes them but there white and rectangular. you can get them at any store that has household cleaning stuff..that should work.

does advantech flooring meet requirements for installing slate flooring?

if I install slate flooring or ceramic tile on advantech subfloor ,is it a good possibility the tile or slate will crack?
You can not tile on any subfloor, (unless it's concrete) you still need to put down an undderlayment. You should have at least an inch and an eighth of flooring under your tile or slate.If you install a 1/4" or1/2" concrete board over your advantech sub you'll be okay.Make sure you mortar the board down with a latex fortified mortar with a 1/4" notch trowel and seam the joints with mesh tape and mortar. You'll be good to go. Good luck.

yes you can but if you just go ahead ,prime the floor and tile you are heading for disaster.The correct preparation and procedure are paramount I would do this in a standard installation whether it be floorboards or chipboard
(1) screw the boards down as good as you can, try not to go through any pipes or cables, hit every joist you can to give it every possible chance
(2)'bounce around' over the whole floor and check for any flexing of the boards, if you're heavy and you stand in the center of a joist you will always get a bit of movement but what you don't want is a load of creaking and seeing the boards moving
(3) assuming all is well next step is pick a matting! one called ditra matting is popular look it up here http://www.schluter.co.uk/produkt.aspx?doc=6-1-ditra.xml&pg=funktion
it does the job but (a) it's expensive,(b) you use quite a lot of adhesive because you have to fill up the dovetails and (c) it raises the level up.I've used this loads of times and never had a problem with the product failing but the one I would (and have done HUNDREDS of times without a problem) now use is called mapeitex which is a thin fiberglass/fleece type of material which you stick down with an adhesive called keraquick and an admix called latex +, because it's so thin you hardly gain any height and don't waste adhesive filling voids, you also use the same adhesive to stick the tiles down.It all comes from a company called Mapei but I can't find this product on they're website, so find a stockist and track it down!
If your boards are flexing to much then 12mm ply screwed at 8" centers hitting what joists you can should do.Whatever you go for you will need a flexible adhesive,I wouldn't use balflex as many people have suggested because although it's a very good adhesive it is very messy and doesn't have as much 'body' as the cement ones and it is very flexible (it's made from ground up tyres!) because your fixing slate you will be needing to 'pack' the tiles up quite a bit to allow for the unevenness and this adhesive will probably not be able to support the weight of the slate on a thick bed.
(4) impregnate or/and seal before grouting
(5) use appropriate grout
(6) maybe seal again

How does Slate flooring hold up outside?

How would it compare with porcelin or ceramic tile on an outdoor patio...I am going to be laying over an existing concrete pad, what other things do I need to consider?
I too have been installing all manner of tile and flooring for many years, and certainly the others who have,,,have valid suggestions. My questions to you might be is this a manufactured slate? IE: with a bottom surface like tile? or is this pieces of field stone you want to lay over a slab?
The difference is important.
If it's been manufactured/milled to have a "flat" underside then it installs like any other tile, and a 1/4 or 3/8 knife will work. If it's as textured and uneven on the underside as the top, I'd go with the heavier mortar, work in small areas at a time, try to use pieces that have the largest FLATS face up and use a level or a level on a 2x4. The end result, textured/natural looking or not, should not end up being a "trip" hazzard.
Actually when/if I install natural slate, I lay down as much mortar as I can, press the pieces into it, often just 4 at a time, so that the mortar squeezes up into the joints and run my finger to smooth it. Slate is very porous and Grout better match if you choose grout, and in the sponging/wiping up excess process the grout can stain the slate. If you use to much of a wet sponge you'll also degrade the bonding agents in the grout, Plus shred the sponges.
I do suggest a test, as I do often
"Waste" 4 pieces of slate on a sheet of plywood, trying any methods you choose, before the effort of the major install, perhaps finding answers/the best way/ and avoid dissapointment during and after the fact.

A while ago I installed a slate tile floor in my bathroom and I have sealed it too. After having it for a little while a white chalky looking substance started apearing on it, i assumed it was dust though. So when i moped the floor with a little bleach and water it some what went away. After having this floor for months now the white chalky stuff has gotten worse and i even hand scrubed the floor with a rag soaked in water, it apeared as if I was cleaning this chalky substance off, but when it dried it was evident it was still there. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to remove this chalky substance. Thank You.
Try a lil vinegar. either straight or cut with a lil water.
