What is the difference between direct lighting and indirect lighting in art?
Jan 16, 2008 by An L | Posted in Other - Visual Arts
i know direct lighting is when a light source is coming specifically from one side? so what is indirect lighting?
Direct lighting in photography and art is when the source of light is uninterrupted while illuminating a subject. Indirect lighting is reflected off of another surface. When properly controlled or channeled, indirect lighting can provide a softer finish on the subject matter, but could also reduce the detail somewhat. Direct lighting, just the reverse, can make the detail more graphic, but then will also reveal imperfections more readily. It all depends upon the goal of the artist or photographer as to how to display a given project.

Art Lighting for posters.....?
Aug 20, 2007 by jmill911 | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I just fixed a game room in the house, and was wondering if there were any kind of cordless art lights to hang over some rare posters to kind of lighten them up? I thought it would look cool, but couldnt find any cordless ones.
Anything cordless is going to be battery operated and it will probably be a kind of weak light. You are better off running lights from the main light in the room.

For best illumination of a piece of art, a lighting specialist for an art gallery recommends that a...........
Mar 22, 2008 by math student | Posted in Mathematics
celing-mounted light must be 6 feet from a piece of art and that the angle of depression of the light must be 38 degrees. HOW FAR FROM A WALL should the light be placed so that the recommendations of the specialist are met? Notice that the art extends outward 4 inches from the wall.
The hypotenuse of the triangle would be 6 feet and the angle would be 38 degrees. You want to find out the length of the adjacent side. That calls for cosine.
cos 38 degrees = adjacent / 6 or
adjacent = 6 * cos 38 degrees = about 4.7280645216403317401638667270151 feet = about 4 feet 8.7367742596839808819664007241813 inches.
Then you have to account for the 4 inch extension of the art, so the light would want to be about 5 feet 0.7367742596839808819664007241813 inches away from the wall.

If I Had a Budget
This book came highly recommended to me by a number of other photographers and I've got to say, there are a lot of good photography and lighting tips and tricks hidden among the name-dropping.
Not As Detailed As Previous Editions
Grecco is a very fine shooter and does have a pretty casual way about him. This particular book will not get into as much detail as some may want as far as... the HOW and the TECHNICAL.
Just not that book. It's more auto-biographical and he does get into how he concepts and gets inspired for a shoot.
I own it, I reffer to it and I don't plan to get rid of it. I also own his now out-of-print The Art Of Portrait Photography as well, they almost need to go hand-in-hand with each other.

Kept it, but wouldn't buy it again.
I found the picture light to be of poor quality, or maybe I just got a bad one. It works and installs easily but all of the joints were loose causing the light to tilt to one side once it was installed. These joints were impossible to tighten so I had to use a tube of glue to keep it straight.

Ultra Lighting Cordless Picture Light
Product is well made, and aesthetically pleasing, but a major draw back is that the level of illumination is insufficient. Having to load up 8 type C alkaline batteries is a also a drag and adds considerable weight to the unit. For a $50 dollar unit one would expect a more thoughtful product that pumps out adequate illumination.
