What kind of lighting should I use for a very low ceiling?

My ceiling is about 7.5ft high and I'm trying to find a ceiling lighting scheme that would visually enhance its height?

Well, for starters - don't get any that hang down more than a few inches. If people have to duck when they come in.... it's a sure sign of a low cieling. Also - you may want to hang some vertical pieces of artwork on the walls to draw attention and give the illussion of height. Plus - if you have curtains in the room, try some with a striped design. The thinner the pattern, the better. Place furniture of various heights around the room as well.... that will add some dimensions that trick the eye into thinking that there is more height. I've never wired before, but I'm good at following instruction/direction. I need a small ceiling fixture in my pantry. The nearest outlet is about 5 feet down on the wall. I'd like to install either a recessed light fixture or even a single spot. If there's a website for this, can you direct me?
I would implore you to call a electrician. There are numerous nuances in a simple job(for a electrician)that a layman would not be able to identify and take care of. Wire stapling distance,penetration of walls and headers,installation of the new fixture box according to weight, and the proper termination of the switch leg,neutral,ground,and hot. Not to mention the wall damage that you might incure opening it up without the experience of knowing which way to route the wire. Do yourself a favor and call a pro.

what is the difference between flush mount and semi flush mount in ceiling lighting?

If you now have a flush mount ceiling light fixture in your kitchen, can you install a semi flush mount without having to make any changes?
A flush mount is when the housing is recessed into the ceiling and the lens is flush w/ the ceiling. A semi flush is when the lens protrudes from the ceiling.

I have can ceiling lights with flood lights. Does anyone make compact flourescent flood lights for can lighting.
Osram, Nelson, and Sylvania (and others) do reflector and par38 globes in compact fluorescent. You should be able to pick them up from your local lighting store, or at least order them in.
In relation to color, there are various degrees (color temperature measured in Kelvins) compact fluoros are available in, most commonly being- 2700K warm white- closest to incandescent, 4000K cool white, and 5000K daylight- closest to natural daylight. The daylight color tends to be a little blue, so I recommend cool white for a clean crisp white light.

How do I rough in a lighting fixture in a finished ceiling?

I want to add a light/ceiling fan in a room that currently does not have a light fixture in the center of the ceiling. What I wanted to know is what is the best way to make the cuts from the light switch to the center of the ceiling without taking down a lot of drywall?
if it's a light and your local housing laws does not require you to have your cables secured using pvc casings, I suggest a creative way of using a coloured or white pvc wiring pipe and just fix them onto the wall and ceiling using clips.
If your local law allows conceal wiring, then i suggest cutting out only small portion of the drywall just enough to fix the cables in and later plastering them back. I hope the frame behind the dry wall is aluminium, which is easier to work with. Bore holes thru the structure to allow cables to go thru instead of cutting them. This will ensure minimal damage to the wall. I suggest using pvc pipes to protect the cables from damaging if you're going to do any thing to the wall later on, like hanging a picture frame with a screw.
For teh ceiling, if you've got a false ceiling, chances are you have a service hole, which gains you access to the space inbetween the ceiling and the boards. Lay the cables in with pvc pipes and try to reach for them from holes that you've cut for lights.
For ceiling fans, they can't be mounted on a false ceiling as they're too heavy for them to take. Mount it on the ceiling.
So people conduct their lives outside. But this is obviously far from a complete solution to providing off-the-grid light. Not everyone wants to have a bunch of plastic bottles stuck in their ceiling. And people do, after all, like to see after the sun and more »
