What color should I paint my front door on my colonial house?
Oct 02, 2008 by Joel S | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I have a light blue/gray colonial with slate blue shutters and white trim and windows and white door. I was thinking about a Red or strong color with white panels for the front door? OR I could just paint it all color and keep the frame around the two small windows on the top of the door white?
play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think "scarlet" (# 2907) might be a great choice.
You can take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & for $5 they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

I'd do a golden yellow or a bright red.

I think black would look really nice. If the house is light blue/grey, it seems like red would be a bit much... especially if you have slate blue shutters.

Sherwin Williams has a site online that has a really neat "color visualizer" where you can see colors that go well etc. They have an entire Colonial collection.

Black shutter with a burgundy door looks so good together with blue/gray house.. It has a clean, crisp and classic look.

What colors do YOU like?
Choosing a favorite makes house seem more welcoming!
Consider:
deep rose
cherry red
coral
lemon
emerald green
navy blue*
purple!
* my suggestion - slate blue and navy with light blue gray and white looks great!

The front door should match your shutters.

You have more choices than you might think. Some questions you should ask yourself are the following:
1) What type of setting is your home in, suburban, city, etc.?
2) How formal or casual do you want your home to appear?
3) Which direction does your home face?
4) Is your door behind a storm door or under an overhang?
5) What is your roof color?
6) What are neighborhood standards?
7) Last but not least, what colors do you like?
Colors that look right in the city often do not play well in the suburbs. The light surrounding a home that has a great deal of foliage around it is very different from a home near the sea or in the city. The bright red door which looks so good in the city often winds up looking like the front door to Santa's Workshop in the burbs. IMHO, red is overdone. This is not to say it can't look good but it needs to be appropriately applied.
Cool north light can make colors appear differently than a southern light. Also, what you think is a great deal of color at 12" away often winds up looking like a whole lot of nothing from the curb. Remember the scale of the door in relation to the house...it is only about 15 square feet on a house which may be 20 feet wide by 20 feet high. Also, if it is behind glass or a porch, it will diminish the impact of the color so that the navy blue you thought you were getting will wind up looking like black from the street.
Your front door is a welcoming beacon on your home. It should be warm and inviting and is a symbolic icon on your home directing people in. While friends and family may enter through the kitchen or garage entry, your formal face to the world is the front door, make it distinctive.
A fantastic color combination with dusty blues is to go complimentary and to choose a soft ochre such as Benjamin Moore's Hathaway Gold, #194. If you are still stuck on your idea of a red door, why not move a bit around the color wheel to a russet which will give you the feel of a red door but will be more complimentary and not a red, white and blue flag house...I suggest Ben Moore's Georgian Brick, HC-50 from their Historic Collection. Please visit my web pages for more info and feel free to email with any particular questions.Best of luck!

Who was trained in European colonial schools? Can you describe the unexpected consequence from the colonizer?
Jan 21, 2008 by n_cre | Posted in Trivia
Explain why the colonizing peoples established European languages and schools, and identify who was trained in them.
Describe an unexpected consequence from the colonizer's point of veiw.
This was one of the WCAS questions in light to European colonies. Anyone capable to answer this is truely a historian.
There were a lot of people trained in European colonial schools that colonized in the new world.

Can i keep my solar lights outside all winter long even when it snows?
Nov 16, 2008 by Sunny | Posted in Garden & Landscape
I just bought some solar lights, like this http://www.solar-lighting.net/images/colonial-solar-path-lights.jpg and i'm just wondering if most people just leave them out year round or if I should bring them inside during the winter months when it snows.
You'd prolong their life by bringing them in, but they are made to stay out. Plus, it'll be pretty to see the lights on the snow.
