Exterior lighting!?
Jul 12, 2008 by Brandon L | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
We have three exterior lights on the front of our house, the two on the garage and one by our front door. They are normal lights put in when the house was built. My question is, is there a way to hook all three lights up to an automatic timer?
They're probably wired to different circuits, so wiring
them to a single timer would be a major undertaking.
Far easier to invest in separate timers, (will fit in
existing switch box), for each.

I've been very happy with motion-sensitive exterior lights, the ones that come on when something moves nearby. (You can set how close, and for how long they stay on.)
The police recommend them highly as a deterrent to burglary.
It's an energy-saver because the lights are on only as needed.
If you're going to be re-wiring, you might as do it with panache!

Does anyone know how to remove oxidation from exterior lighting fixtures?
Apr 28, 2008 by McLaren | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
I installed all new low voltage exterior landscape lighting three years ago. The fixtures now have fairly noticable oxidation. I believe that they are powder coated cast aluminum. I have 20 path lights, a large five lamp pole fixture, and several floods that all have the same problem.
I invested a fairly substansial amount of time and money in this lighting and I would like to find some way to remove the oxidation without having to replace all of the lights.
You can use car polish to remove the oxidation and restore the original color but to be honest, that is what Al does. If you clean it all up, in 3 years it will oxidize again. It's the exposure to ultraviolet radiation that is the culprit.

Does anyone know where to find Tiffany-like exterior wall mounted lighting?
Feb 25, 2006 by hunnybunny | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I am searching for wall mounted exterior lighting to put in 4 areas around my pool. I want the Tiffany look with the multi-colors. If you have ever been to Pat O'Brians in New Orleans outside on their patio, you will know what I am talking about. I have looked everywhere!!!!! But no luck!!!
This site has some very nice outdoor wall mounted lighting. Not sure about the tiffany type but you can check to see if you can find what you want.

Need options to exterior post lighting?
Apr 04, 2007 by susan m | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I hate the typical metal post lighting. Any different ideas on exterior lighting appreciated.
There are many low voltage options available. Check with the home improvement stores in your area (menards, Lowes, etc). You can configure them to come on at dusk and go off any time after or wait til dawn. They are fairly easy to install yourself. If you are only interested in security you can always add a regular 120v lamp nearer to your house.

Why can I use Florecent light bulb with a From Dusk to Dawn exterior lighting?
Aug 12, 2007 by Nathan B | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
and if I used it, does it really save money? Or would it mess up the electric system to cause higher electric bills? Should I change it back to a normal light bulb ?
Instead of using the normal Par 50 exterior incandescent light that are normal for exterior lighting, use a 100watt spring bulb. This one is Fluorescent in nature, uses way less energy and last approximately 16 times longer. Hope this helps.... Plus the fluorescent bulb usually needs a ballast to start the gases inside of this type. You can purchase ballast's that just screw into the receptacle.
