How to use flexible conduit to wire a new outdoor, garage light.?
Aug 12, 2006 by WeileMom | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
We are installing a new outdoor light to the other side of our garage. We are using pre-wired flexible conduit to connect the power from the existing outdoor light. The flexible conduit has three wires- black, white, and one without covering (plain copper). We are guessing that the bare wire is a ground, but what do we connect it to?
Yes, the bare wire is the ground wire.
If the box is metal, connect it to the box.
If the box is plastic, connect it directly to the light fixture. Most light fixtures now days have a green screw somewhere on them for this purpose.
It is imperitive you keep the white with the white, and black on black.
Remember to shut off the circuit breaker that controls that area first.
BillyandGaby above is incorrect about black and white.
White is the common wire, and is not hot and cannot hurt you if you touch it (if everything is wired correctly). Black is the hot wire, and you can get shocked if you connect with the black wire and any ground wire, common wire or...water or the ground....
If in doubt, buy a how-to electrical book for home-wiring at the local hardware store.

Grounds are black or Brown and the live is white.
The copper wire is the safety ground.
The outdoor light should have matching wires. Make sure the black goes to the black and the white goes to the white. The connection points will need screw on lead protectors.
When doing this, realize that if you do not do it exactly to code and the garage burns down for any reason, they will blame it on that

You need to be more specific. Basically wherever you are picking up your supply from for the outside light, there will have to be a live, neutral and an earth. so just connect 1 earth to the other.
Depending on what kind of light you are installing make sure that you use a permanent live.

The bare wire is the ground. Unlike your other answer - the BLACK wire is the HOT, and the WHITE wire is the NEUTRAL.
If the colors on the old light are not black and white - connect the black to the switched wire of the light circuit, and the white to the unswitched wire. If your existing light does not have a ground to it, you connect the bare wire to the box of the old fixture. The new fixture should have a bare wire with it for you to connect the gorund to it.

do solar panels have to be fixed and solid or it possible to make a flexible light weight one?

They can be flexible. They have a new kind that hasn't been put into commercial use yet that you can PAINT on. They think one day you'll be able to print them off your computer with a standard printer and then tape the page up wherever you want.

What is a good stage lighting controller for a high school?
Jan 14, 2009 by WTC | Posted in Performing Arts
My school stage lighting controller is really old and doesnt work and also isnt very flexible, does anyone have a good suggestions?
We have AMX for our control cableing and as far as scrollers and intelegent fixture go I don't think we will ever ave any but I would like the option because I can borrow some of my churches equip for shows if I ever need it...THANKS!
Strand Lighting recently came out with a new addition to their control line: the Palette Series. Really versatile, made for theatre, pretty good for the money if you're looking to go new. Otherwise, you could try an older Strand 300i, though they don't make them anymore. It comes in two parts: the processor and the control surface. You can get different control surfaces based on what you need. ETC Lighting also recently retired their Express control line, making them even more affordable than they already were. They come in lots of different sizes and you can still get them if used if you do some searching. These are by no means the best consoles on the market but still, I think, the best and most affordable for high school theatre. Good luck!

What's something flexible that I could use in a costume?
Oct 23, 2008 by KaJaWi | Posted in Halloween
I want to make a round costume but I don't know what to use to make it stay round and also strong enough for me to be inside it. I was thinking of light weight pipes for the frame but I still need something flexible for the round part... I'm making a Pac Man costume if that helps.
Hi
I did this with some old-fashioned wire coathangers - I unravelled them and then bent them into the shape I wanted, then stretched and stapled some stretchy fabric over them. It was a bit of an arse to do though, and to be honest some thicker wire would have worked better, if you have a good hardware store nearby (it's not expensive and they should cut it to lengths you want).
Good luck - it's a wicked idea for a costume and I must confess I might steal it one day!
