Which is better, low voltage or mains halogen lighting?
Oct 21, 2006 by MARK B | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
Can't find any sensible answers to help me decide whether to fit low voltage halogen downlights or mains voltage downlights. I know that mains voltage fittings are cheaper but the bulbs don't last as long.
Is there a difference in light quality?
Does having a transformer per light make any difference (like a background hum if you have 10 lights each with their own transformer)?
Anything else I need to consider?
It all comes down to total wattage used.
1- Fluorescent bulbs - the new ones are good for 10,00 hours.
2- Halogen are generally brighter.
3- Recessed (quartz) with or without transformers get hot too.
4- The bulbs in the low voltage ones seem to last longer.
(the ones we have in Spain - 220 Volts main) 5 or more years I only have changed 2 out of 9).
5- Two types of bulbs in this class 1 has a glass cover so you can't touch the tiny bulb with your finger and the other is open (gets more air and lasts longer) [Don't touch it! ! !]
6- We have two surface mount fixtures (2 bulbs each) with swivels and the living room is 10 sq meters.
Good Luck ! ! !

you wrote so much yet still didnt give enough info.and the info you gave isnt all correct. location of fixtures? size of area? required lumens? I can answer some, yes all lights give off differant specific color variations....also some more heat than others...and why say the main(I dont know what you mean by that) lights dont last as long? why not? If you mean main voltage as in 110 volts, yes many do last even longer than halogen. there is so many new products on themarket just check first

Halogen adds too much thermal load to your air conditioning system. Try low voltage LED clusters to replace the halogen bulbs and high efficiency flourescents.

How many 50 watt halogen lamps per circuit? Track lighting doesn't specify.?
Apr 14, 2008 by Centurion | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
We're looking at adding 4 sets of halogen track lights to a room. Each set contains four 50 watt halogen lights. (200 watts per 4' section.) I'd like to add them to a single run of track around 16' in length. Portfolio lighting doesn't specify the maximum lights per circuit. "Consult an electrician." (Item #233131) Can I put all 16 lamps on one circuit? If I divide them, how many circuits do I need?
ASSUMING YOU'RE IN THE U.S.: you can put up to about 1800 Watts on a 20A circuit. You can put about 1400 Watts on a 15A circuit. So, yes they can all go on one circuit, assuming nothing else is on that circuit. If these are low-voltage track lights with thransformers, then you have to add for wattage (about 15%) for the efficiency factor of the transformer. So your Lamps total 800 Watts, if low-voltage maybe 920 Watts. If you are in California, and this is a commercial installation, see California Title-24 before installing these fixtures.

How can Philodendron plants live with only halogen lighting?
May 19, 2006 by cardin2287 | Posted in Botany
The Philodendron tolerates low light and prefer a medium light range for the best growth indoors. So medium low intensity halogen life is sufficient for it's survival.

Low voltage halogen lighting? What benefit if any?
Dec 29, 2006 by Contrary Mary | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
I am looking at buying new lighting for my kitchen - the halogen one I like is listed as a "low voltage system", what is the purpose of "low-voltage" systems? What the reason for why I might want this, are they more economical or is there an electrical benefit to them - please help.
The advantage with low voltage is lower power consumption for the same light levels. Therefore lower power bills and less greenhouse gases produced to run your lights.
The side issues are that they tend to make architecture look good as they can be directed to specific areas, but they are not flattering to people as the light is directed straight down. (Top light) This can be overcome by using diffusers but this limits their light output. As with everything- pros and cons.

what are the advantages of halogen lighting?
Mar 03, 2006 by wtjour | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
Accurate colors.. It is a very hot light that mimics the color of sunlight well. That's why galleries use it for art.
It is available in small form factors and low voltage for very flexable installation. The low voltage aspect lends itself to remodeling applications where running 120VAC cableing in the walls can get very expensive.
The hotness factor is also a drawback.. keep it away from drapes and clothes!!
