Kitchen lighting?
Jul 27, 2008 by Colorado Papa | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I'm in the process of remodeling my kitchen with new flooring, appliances, cabinets and lighting. I had a false ceiling with floricent lights above the 2x4 paneling. I've removed the paneling and lights and now am thinking of installing recessed lights but don't know how to space them or where. The ceiling is 8-ft and the cabinets are going to be castled (staggered to the ceiling). I really hate to have a shadow on the countertop.
How far out over the sink should one be placed?
Another problem, recessed lighting says insulation should not be within 3 inches. The area above the kitchen is an attic with blown-in insulation. I really don't want the cold to be coming in around them. How can that be avoided?
Two things; 1) You need to get IC rated recessed lights, they can come in contact with insulation.
2) The lights need to be mounted between 18" and 24" off the wall, so that they shine on the counters from directly overhead. If they are further away, your shadow blocks the light in front of you.
Under-counter lights are the absolute best when it comes to food prep. Then you can place recessed anywhere you want in the ceiling. You might consider a ceiling fan for comfort too.

I generally place the cans centered over the cabinet doors and aprox 12 to 18 inches away from the doors.
Center over the sink.
Use IC (insulated ceiling) rated cans.
Also, try to install "under cabinet lights" to avoid shadows. They are also good for night lights.

Thanks everyone
DIY and BHG both have websites that might have information that could help you. As for the Trading Spaces episode, I hav ebeen able to locate some I had watched by going onto their website and then doing a search under the room that was redecorated or room theme.

Is it possible to buy stylish kitchen lighting that uses low-energy bulbs?
Jul 20, 2007 by Rickyboy | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
They all seem to require halogen or small ordinary pearl bulbs. This goes for every plug-in silver/chrome spotlight system that catches my eye.
What are you saying Princess?
Or can anyone translate?
Yes, we have them in our kitchen, under lighting and ceiling lighting, we got all ours from B & Q and the local lighting shop. They are chrome and very trendy. Hope this helps

What lighting should i use in a kitchen with a plank ceiling?
Oct 02, 2008 by mel | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I am remodeling a 1930s home with the original plank and beam ceiling. I'd like to put halogen lighting in the kitchen but am not sure what type of lighting I can use. The electrician has suggested track lighting, but i'd prefer something less obtrusive. there appears to be approx. 3 inches of space above the planks. does anyone have experience with this type of ceiling?
You can use fluorescent lamb, the one that is oblong. You can support the proportional substructure of fluorescent lamb at the planks of your ceiling. Usually, fluorescent lambs transmit a bride white light.

Ideas for the best lighting for my kitchen?
Jul 11, 2008 by Cathy | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I have a dark kitchen with one small light fixture. My kitchen is not that big and does not have alot of natural light. It has only one small window. What is the best lighting to brighten it up? I have heard Flourescent is the best but I thought that it was ugly and old fashioned. It's only a small kitchen. Any ideas? I need something to throw out a lot of light. Is it better to get one long light fixture?
Flourescent fixtures have come a long way in the last few years, and you can get the bulbs in the better "Warm White".
Also look at the new LED light fixtures.
