Trying to find value of vintage swarovski crystal chandelier?
Sep 08, 2007 by reader | Posted in Other - Visual Arts
A good friend gave me an eight light vintage swarovski crystal chandelier. I don't know how to find out the value of it. The Internet searches seem to be no help. Anyone have knowledge in this area?
Please take it to a legitimate antique store and ask for a valuation. Also, call the local art museum in your community and ask for the name of someone to value your antique. They are very knowledgeable.
It is valuable if it is genuine. Do not sell it to the first person who values it for you. Tell them it is for insurance purposes.
Or, ask your insurance company who they would refer you to in order to have it valued.

changing the lightbulbs in a vintage style light fixture?
Dec 01, 2007 by rudy the bobcat | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I have an older style round light fixture that the bulbs burned out in. This fixture has no screws in it and the whole thing turns when i try to turn it to remove it. Also it seems like it moves back and forth in any direction, but never comes down. Im afraid that if I try to force it that it will ruin it or break it. How to I get it down so that I can change the light bulb.
geez ... without any picture of the light fixture it'll be kind of hard to help you ... sorry

I have the glass bowls only from some vintage ceiling lights. How can I retrofit them to use them?
Nov 16, 2008 by Sue | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
I'm remodeling a family farmhouse and want to use these to retain some old character. I only have the glass — the saucer type. They have three holes around the perimeter of the glass, so I'm guessing they hung from the original ceiling fixtures by beaded chain or something.
I'm semi-handy and can wire. Are there new fixtures I could buy that hang like this so I could change out the glass? Or should I make something from scratch, and how?
I'm an old house gal myself, and have had really good success finding replacement fixtures and/or bowls through old house lighting centers. A lot of those old styles are still being produced and I'm thinking you might be able to find the parts you need quite easily.... or, at the very least, you can look at the catalog and get an idea of how the fixture is supposed to look. I'm attaching a link to my favorite old house lighting resource.

How do i read this vintage light meter?
Feb 10, 2008 by Aaron P | Posted in Photography
Its a Sunscope Hyper VII, it appears to work fine (the needle moves when you point it at a light source), but since you cant set a F-stop or shutter speed i cant figure out how to read it. Here is a picture http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v444/infiniteohms/sunscope002.jpg
Point the meter at the subject.
Read the value displayed by the needle.
For this example, let's say it points to 5.6.
Set the "ASA Index" opposite the red number 5.6 on the "Light Scale."
Read the possible combinations on the "f-Stops" and "Time" scale.
For instance, if you put ASA 200 opposite 5.6 on the "Light Scale," you could use f/11.0 at 1/50 sec, f/8.0 at 1/100 sec, f/5.6 at about 1/180 sec., and so on.
I don't know if this is an "incident" or "reflectance" meter, so if your exposures seem to be off, instead of aiming the meter at the subject, point it over your shoulder at the light source. An incident meter would probably have a white diffuser over the photocells and a reflectance meter would have a clear glass window. Some meters have a removable white diffuser so you can use them either way.
